Watched West Ham since the late 60's. Devonshire remians the best player I saw play, even after a horrendous injury he pulled the strings after losing his place. Criminal he only won 8 caps and would be worth twice what grealish is worth now.

@@TheWorldClassStamp I doubt if even his biggest fans would go that far but he was very silky, he could receive the ball in tight situations and beat a man from what I saw. Don't know how good his end product was but I was left wondering if he could've won more caps. It wasn't easy for his type of player in England in the 80s.

The player in the modern game that reminds me of Devonshire is Eberiche Eze. The way he drifts past opponents with a drop of the shoulder takes me right back to Upton Park in the late 70s / early 80s.

As an Evertonian, I like and respect TC and he has his own views and opinions. He joined Everton in 88 who had been twice champions, ECWC winners and 3 times FA cup finalists in the previous few years. Southall under Colin Harvey was supernatural and even better than when he was 85 player of the year. Sheedy Reid and Steven were all outstanding players. Mark Ward over Steven and Devonshire ahead of Sheedy? Really? Dave Watson was colossal at the back and Graeme Sharp was still the best target man centre forward in the country. Van den Hauwe would also get in ahead of Dicks. I'm sure West Ham fans would disagree but their 3rd place 86 finish didn't come close to that Everton team. Cottee played with most of them 88 89 and beyond.

Surprised Cottee gave Ratcliffe a mention. Didn't get on with him. I think Cottee regrets not signing for Arsenal. Two League titles and two domestic cups. He came to Everton full of clicks and a squad separated by those who had won trophies and those who hadn't. Last season at Everton we very nearly went down.

You make a fair point and as a WHU fan himself TC is clearly a bit biased, but to be fair he was coming through at West Ham when some of those players were winning FA Cups in 75 and 80, reaching a European final in 76 and a league cup final in 81, so it wasn't just about us challenging for the league in 86. I do think people like Bonds, Martin and Devonshire were underrated....not saying West Ham can really claim 8 out of 11 places given Everton's success though!
