Brian's notes: "I only want them to be happy" is an expression we often use, but what makes a person happy? Attainment of fame or fortune is a dubious indicator of happiness as any number of cable channels, websites or tabloids can attest. So, too, is it very difficult to be 'happy' while struggling daily trying to make ends meet. I would far rather wish for me, or for anyone I care about, to have peace of mind...
Because when we find sleep hard to come by due to worry about paying bills or where the kids are, it's easy to feel regret or ponder greener pastures; to reflect on choices made: "if I hadn't left school when I did...left (or stayed with) him/her...said (or hadn't said) those words..."
Because its in our very nature to wonder, "What If?"
And then something happens, something severe enough to maybe alter our lives, and in response family and friends rally in support, unite and galvanize to overcome. At times like these we are reminded that there is indeed great treasure to be found - not in the things we lack, but in appreciating the things, and people, we do have.
This song features the talents of Gracie Weinstein on backing vocals. The vocals were recorded by Matt Graff with the assistance of knobs, dials and bludgeon. We thank you. The lead guitar solo section of this song was written by Brian, marking the first time Tony didn't write his own solo.

“What If?"
How many times has she listened to ‘Born to Run’?
Like she’s been waiting for someone to show her how its done
Married forever, God, she loves those kids
But sometimes she looks down that road
Sometimes she looks down that road
Sometimes she looks down that road and wonders, “What If?”
He’s been faithful to her since he first looked in her eyes
And that’s a rare thing, especially in these times
But every now and then his mind will drift
And sometimes he looks down that road
Sometimes he looks down that road
Sometimes he looks down that road and wonders, “What If?”
We will hold out these human hands
Guide each other through the shadowlands
Praying for a single ray of light
Harm’s fire at every turn
Hoping that the flames won’t burn
A family's heart beats strongest through the night
His daughter's with a boy they don't know
Since quittin' school she's hardly ever home
What consequences follow from a kiss?
Well, sometimes she looks down that road
Sometimes she looks down that road
Sometimes she looks down that road and wonders, “What If?”
We will hold out these human hands
Guide each other through the shadowlands
Praying for a single ray of light
Harm’s fire at every turn
Hoping that the flames won’t burn
A family's heart beats strongest through the night
His doctor’s words were spoken soft and low
But they didn't learn nothin' they didn’t already know
He took her hand; he looked right in those eyes
He said, “It’s just another road
It’s just another road
If you’re with me on this road we’ll be fine”
We will hold out these human hands
Guide each other through the shadowlands
Praying for a single ray of light
Harm's fire at every turn
Hoping that the flames won't burn
A family's heart beats strongest through the night
We will hold out these human hands
Guide each other through the shadowlands
Praying for a single ray of light
Harm's fire at every turn
Hoping that the flames won't burn
A family's heart beats strongest through the night
