Tony Ferrino - Silence Of The Lambs

My personal favourite from Steve Coogan's much under-rated character, Tony Ferrino.
Here we enjoy a preview from Ferrino's forthcoming musical, The Silence Of The Lambs.
I believe Steve's brother, Martin (of The Mock Turtles) composed the music. I love the fact that the production quality of it all is so high - the whole joke would have failed otherwise!

All of Steve Coogan's characters are innocents. They mean well. Tony Ferrino is perhaps the most interesting of all because his songs are catchy and complexly sincere to a particular style in delivery and presentation. He dresses the part, he does seem popular with women. There's a blind spot to him but it's not exaggeratedly huge. You can believe he's real. The writing and production are spot on. It's not 'mere' parody. It's a character study plus a study of cultural expectations plus a study of British light entertainment and of the carefree spirit of the 60s/70s. One of Coogan's genius moments.

Coogans characters are composite, he creates complicated deep comic figures, therein lies his genius. If you never look beyond the top layer you miss all the fun.

'Steve Brown' was the co-writer. Martin Coogan is credited only on Sunday For Me & Man Stallion according to the album. (Was too busy with his Mock Turtles millions, probably).
