For people who have never stood at the top of a vert ramp, it is about a 20 foot straight drop to hard wood. When you’re at the top your body is physically reacting like your at the edge of a roof on a tall building. Then you have to fall off it on an angle where you would land straight on your face if your board wasn’t there. Skateboarding is so great because when you do drop in you feel like you just over came your mind and body, nothing else like it.
@joetroutt74255 жыл бұрын
The "vert" part of the ramp in this video looked like 2 feet (10feet high) and then it starts to transition. Try doing it on 4 foot of vert which would be a 12' drop in. Feels like going straight to hell.

Skateboarding is awesome because it is so anti-primate. It doesn't play to ANY of our strengths, except for bipedal balance. That's why JBP made it one of his 12 rules: "Don't bother kids when they are skateboarding"

Dropping in is on my bucket list. First time I tried it when I was 17 around 10 or 11 years ago I bent my leg sideways and now I have damage to my left knee (torn acl and meniscus) and I've been terrified to do it ever since.
@joetroutt74255 жыл бұрын
@@polsdofer you have to work up to it. Start with increments like 4ft, 6ft, 8ft,....you get the point. Then it won't be so terrifying.
@Mrcoconutgun5 жыл бұрын
@@polsdofer Dropping in general, or dropping in on vert? You could always start with a little 4ft quarter pipe, much less scary when the drop is small. Although the same basic fear applies to dropping in on anything, shit I dropped in on this tiny 2ft quarter pipe for my first time dropping in, and I had to work myself up for 30 minutes to commit and do it. Although once you get that, dropping in on most heights is so much easier. I've never gone past 8ft tho, something about that several foot vertical drop freaks me out, and I can't get past it.

I learned to drop in on a small half pipe. Once I got confident, I realized that the one I taught myself on was actually harder than the larger one on the other side of the park because the transition was much sooner and more aggressive. I still am a beginner even after a lot of years of riding around town, but I’m finally in a place where it’s more about having fun doing tricks and keeping fit where back then I just used it to get around town and never bothered to learn grinds and airs. I’m afraid of heights, but I also love ramps and I hope getting back into skating will help me get over that fear so I can drop in on the large half pipe.

the key to steep drop ins is to be absolutely 100% committed, have confidence you will make it, and do not hesitate... i apply this logic to surfing when the waves are heavy/ step,fast drop ins and of course for dropping into half pipes for skating
@dillon43216 жыл бұрын
That pumping back and forth until you are comfortable riding the pipe is a really good tip. Makes it so much easier to build up to a drop in
@thestain26982 жыл бұрын
I’d like to point out that the physics behind a drop in are that your shoulders must be parallel to the ramp in all the phases of the drop, or you’re gonna end up falling backwards or forward. That’s why you have to commit to going forward, because a vert ramp is vertical on the top by definition, so your shoulders basically need to be perpendicular to the ground instead of parallel to it in order to complete the drop in. In other words, you have to shift your mental order and accept the fact that when you are skating vert, you’re actually living horizontally instead of vertically. That’s the full commitment, and the reason behind it is that your shoulders have to be aligned to the ramp.

Here's some good advise, I just started skating vert less than a year ago. First time I dropped in was with my old street board with small ass wheels and loose ass trucks. Made it first try but was a lil wobbly.What you want is like a 8-8.5 deck with independent truck the same width or something similar possibly harder bushings,and 58mm-60mm wheels. If you can drop in on a smaller ramp you can do a vert ramp its not that bad skated street my whole life and now I'm getting into vert,been getting some airs over the coping already,stalls/grinds still scare the shit out of me though.and wear a helmet you will bust your head open

If you have miniramps check out that video on the top that pops up at 3:30. Main idea is put your weight on your front foot. I've never seen somebody put too much weight on their front foot and fall forward. Knees bent, weight on the front foot, work you way up from smaller to bigger ramps. If the first thing you ever need to drop in on is a vert ramp then god be with you. I think as long as you commit you will be fine with your knees bent and the weight on your front foot. I had the benefit of a park with a 3 foot mini, a 5 foot mini, a 6 foot mini and a 9 foot vert so it was really easy to work my way up and I was always surprised how easy it was when I finally decided to try and just committed to it.

I relate to the first time. In the mid 80s, gnarly kinked concrete bowl at west Hobart. Alone because it was sk8s dormant period, not that i or any of my fiends cared. We skated everywhere anyway just for the transport. But i was collecting a little competition trophy thing at the the only skate shop, which was mainly a sailmaker, windsurfer place and i saw on a tv, bones brigade 1. I couldnt believe it and i thought what i saw was just what everyday bowl skating should be like. It started us dropping in instead of rolling in. Thats how starved for information we were. Of course Transworld and Thrasher helped but they were 'still' shots, you couldnt know how they got in or out of an invert until you saw video. So instuctional videos like this one would have been great. But Bones brigade helped, just to show you the smoothe flow of vert

Yes, he is the image of skateboarding, and yes, he makes a shit ton of money but no, he is NOT the best. And oh, you had a like on your comment, I can see that you've removed it. So you talking to me about "self-liking comments"?

I was learning vert for the first time yesterday and it's so much scarier than it looks. I feel super hard and im already very bruised, I was skating for about 3 hours and before we left I finally got it but I was so mad at at myself for how long it took me.
@paulfield68152 жыл бұрын
You should be proud that you actually did it. Standing on that deck is terrifying. NIce work!
@klownssuck94787 жыл бұрын
first time, hold the nose , let go of the nose just before the front wheels hit the ramp. I remember feeling like you had to "fall" into the ramp almost . Mini ramps its just a case of stomp down hard imo ;)

Been skating for 15 years and still can't do any tricks or drop off the vert, this video encouraged me.

Which is harder, 900 or impossible to late varial flip on flat?
@sethchristian40027 жыл бұрын
zukodude487987 Those are two different kinda of tricks.
@zukodude4879877 жыл бұрын
Yea one is a 900 the other is an impossible to late varial flip, i am asking compare the different level of difficulty in these 2 different tricks.
@rodrigog56547 жыл бұрын
zukodude487987 I would say the 900 because well it's a fkn 900 degree turn, and if you master late flips you can add them more easily .. I think
@Thommybee-857 жыл бұрын
the late flip. hypothetically if you had a big enough ramp and enough time you could do a 900, though landing it is another thing. a talented 12 year old did a 1080 on the megaramp. if the mega ramp was around in 1999 who knows how far hawk, pappas, or other contender could have span.

Also, stay straight as in draw a straight line down the ramp. The most common slam I see in drop in virgins is the board turning a little resulting in a pitch off the heel side rail, not good.....

I think the skate part of youtube needs some serious "how to fall" videos. Most of the skaters, vert or street, are way better at falling rather than closing tricks or gaps. Knowing how to fall gives a big boost in morale and confidence. If you for example watch pro skaters video about trying to do a gap, you see how they always tend to fall in the same way and they are not scared about it at all. Anyway props to tony

my first drop in was on a mini half pipe but it still had a foot of vert.was almost unskateable.i understood the logic but on the first attempt I went overconfident and leaned too far foward which ended up in a faceplant.lol.second time i got it.definately cant let fear get the best of you.

When I first dropped in the Big QP in our skatepark (which was as big as this Halfpipe there) my mind was totally switched off during going through that vert. I just realised that I did it when I was rolling away full of adrenaline. Great feeling and not comparable to smaller QPs. I always had respect of this Pipe and didn't do it very often. My friend did the drop in a few weeks before I did and slammed hard because his legs got too shaky and he crashed from half the ramp into the flat.. That's what Tony says.. If you decide to do it, DO IT

The way I was taught to drop in was to focus on stomping my front wheels down against the side with my front foot. Everything else was just learning to level myself out. Really stomp down -- slap your front wheels down on the side and have confidence to commit to riding it down. First time I dropped in successfully I felt like a champ. Then I worked up to rolling in. Rolling in was scarier at first because I kept feeling like I was going to trip on the coping, but it's the next thing to learn after dropping in. After a while I felt like rolling in was easier than dropping in. Then I guess ollieing in is the next hurtle -- but that's a whole other thing entirely and really requires a lot more skill. If you're already comfortable skating vert, dropping in and rolling in is a mental game more than anything.
