This is an awesome long running model railroad layout and the background is so well painted to look like large fields and such. Well done ! Two of my Uncles worked on the Nickel Plate Railroad and one of my other Uncles and one of my Grandfathers worked on the Bessemer Railroad. When I was a three year old boy my Dad took me to the Nickel Plate Railroad Yard and I got to see the old steamers in the Roundhouse and I even rode on a switcher in the railyard for a few hours and loved every minute of it !

Am I noticing correctly the locomotives have synchronized sound to the 1/4 wheel rotations? if yes, what sound systems are deployed on these locomotives and how is the sound system actuated by the wheel rotations?

When Tony scrapped his old layout I wondered how he could better that and it looks like he did. Smoothest running HO steam I've ever seen. I remember back decades ago when he was reluctant to run steam in any great amount.

I met Tony about 1980, been so long but the time is about right. I think it was the last operating session with steam on the V&O RR. I was friends with the McClellan sons. I spent countless hundreds of hours in the basement on walnut st. Those were fun times. my favorite train was the 'valley local",,,train XVL. This ran with a 2-8-0. The town the XVL ran to was Clintwood. Clintwood section is now located at the model rr museum in Tn. The pusher job out of Dawson Springs was also fun. The V&O was an absolutely amazing model rr. it ran so smoothly. Way ahead of its time. the detail and lighting in my opinion has never been equaled. I can not over emphasize the quality of the lighting on the V&O. Allen,Bev,Kelley,Brad,Patrick,,,and freckles the dog,barney,yamas and mittens the cats. oh the memories.

I got myself one of those Nickel Plate Brass Hudsons and man is it a pain. I'm the first one to actually run it as it was new in the box. The second time I ran it, a rod link on the engineer's side broke! The gearbox is smooth going forward but requires a shim to take up the backlash in reverse. Without the shim, it can't even go backwards. My layout doesn't have the widest of turns and expected some issues with shorts but it essentially can't turn right without causing a short. Being in as delivered appearance, I knew it was gonna be a little bit of a project to add smoke deflectors, the shield over the air compressors and number boards but now having to source another rod? That side is essentially screwed and it's brand new!

The realism, the detail is.........We'll, words just don't do it justice. I mean just about every segment of this video made me feel as if I were literally standing or driving outside in the open alongside a real right-of-way. Not too many model layouts give that kind of affect.

In a model railroader in his train of thoughts column he says he painted a blue background and used sceniking flatland backdrops for the trees and background fields. It looks very realistic. I don't remember which issue. Tony Koester really knows how to make a realistic model railroad. That's why every time I pick up a Model Railroader I read his column

Wonderful layout, 5 stars. Loved the video. Two suggestions. 1. The moving shots are great. I haven't seen that done very often. A stablizer for the camera would make these so much better. 2. A tripod would be help remove those little giggles. Maybe one more thing, if you please, slightly longer takes in some of the situations. Thanks for shooting and editing this video.

Inexperienced railfanner and his cheap camera. Plus the owner has the sound way down on locos. Its hard to hear with 30 some odd locos making noise.
@cjdavis26845 жыл бұрын
And this was really cool I love the steam trains and these look really nice the only thing that was off was there really should have been some smoke coming from the finals that literally made them look more realistic but all in all it's really a nice lay out your trees look just like the real things.
