An evening between two close friends, work colleagues, and celebrated figures in American culture. Playwright, writer, screenwriter Tony Kushner and The Public's Artistic Director Oskar Eustis, discuss Kushner's screenplay for the award-winning film Lincoln.
Tony Kushner's extensive list of plays includes A Bright Room Called Day, Angels in America and The Intelligent Homosexuals Guide to Capitalism and Socialism. His books range from Brundibar to Wrestling with Zion: Progressive Jewish-American Responses to the Palestinian/Israeli Conflict. He wrote the screenplay for Mike Nichols for Angels in America and two films for Steven Spielberg Munich and most recently the Oscar-nominated Lincoln. He has awarded two Tonys, three Obie Awards, an Olivier Award, and an Emmy just to name a few.
Oskar Eustis has been the Artistic Director of The Public Theater since 2005. Since he's been at The Public, he has directed the 2008 Shakespeare in the Park production of Hamlet with Michael Stuhlbarg and Sam Waterson. He has also directed the New York premieres of Rinne Groff's The Ruby Sunrise and Compulsion, also Lawrence Wright's The Human Scale. Oskar Eustis commissioned Tony Kushner's Angels in America at the Eureka Theater in San Francisco and along with Tony Taccone directed its world premiere at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles. In 2009, he received a Tony award for his revival of the 1960's cult rock musical Hair.
