@@victotronics - I’ll grant it’s not Beat or Discipline, but I personally love Three. Granted, it was the first KC album I ever heard, but I think when you think about what was going on musically in general, and the direction the the “new” KC was exploring, it sort of makes sense. That and I LOVE the bass part on the version of Sleepless that I first heard (the “Tony Levin Mix,” without the rest on the eight note). “Submarines are lurking in my foggy ceiling.” Any band warped enough to come up with that as a lyric was ok in my book! …and then I started discovering the rest of their collection, and it just kept getting better (for the most part - I’ll certainly concede there are times when Robert and company just lose me - but that’s ok, I’ll hang out and eventually they’ll come back around and pick me up again!

I'd always thought Tony was British, but when I googled it (he's from Boston) what blew me away was finding out all the '70s classics in the US he played bass on. Prior to Crimson, he played with dozens of artists as a studio musician (and favorite of Bob Ezrin) including John Lennon, Paul Simon, James Taylor, Carly Simon, and Alice Cooper: that's him on "Welcome to my Nightmare," and that wicked bass line in Paul Simon's "You can call me Al" is his. I heard him play on well over a dozen hit songs back then without knowing it! He was SO prolific as a young session guy in NYC, Gabriel was in the middle of all that, and joining Crimson only slowed his studio gigging down a little. His discography is mind blowing, over 500 tracks with dozenS of artists, google THAT;)

I should look up what he did play on for that album, the discography was't specific about the tracks, just the artist and album, and those were some amazing artists and some of their best albums. Met Tony when I worked for Warner-Electra-Atlantic. Peter Gabriel was there, too. They were both lovely, normal people. Talkative and kind. The reward for their being such normal guys is that they both are extraordinary musicians.

I had NO idea my speed was at 1.5. I had just watched King Crimson do some 2 movement thing and didn't know it was on 1.5. Came here.... watched the intro and was like holy crap! This guy played with Lennon, Peter Gabriel, King Crimson, Pink Floyd (it's him in AMLOR), Yes (it's him the the AWBH record). One of my greatest music moments was a short talk I had with him after he played with Pat Mastelotto, Terry Bozzio and Allan Holdsworth (an improv-ensemble, mind blowing). After the gig he was removing his gear himself from stage (so cute to see that, such a monster and such a simple guy). I chatted a bit with him while he was doing that, he was so nice!

And Three of Perfect Pair as well. I love that album, and it has some killer bass work. There are monster rhythm sections out there and Levin/Bruford is definitely one of them. And of course Tony was in another one, with Manu Katche in Peter Gabriel's band. But the subtlety and finesse of the Levin/Bruford combo is pretty dang magical (gosh darn the blankity heck.)

Les Claypool said in a Bass Player Magazine interview many many many moons ago that Tony Levin's Stick sound was an influence. Also Discipline came out in 1981 and Sailing The Seas of Cheese came in in 1991, math ;)

Before he played with King Crimson, I knew him as the bass player in Paul Simon's band in the movie "One Trick Pony". So, seeing the bass player in Paul Simon's band playing this way out King Crimson music was jarring to say the least. First time I've heard a description of how Elephant Talk was done. Hammer-on with the "wrong" hand, the string order is inverted, the tuning intervals are different... I remember playing that Discipline CD really loud especially on 'Elephant Talk' and hearing that phaser effect on the Chapman gave me goose bumps. I had seen them on SNL before I got into Prog Rock. I took me a while to fully understand KC, but the Discipline album was really accessible because I understood the influences better. I tried to invent the exact opposite of a Chapman Stick. Instead of tapping you would do pull offs. I played the prototype for a while but I didn't like developing these callouses on both hands because I type in my day job. It would make a good brain teaser toy trying to figure out all those pull off patterns.

I'm obsessed with Pink Floyd, and found out that Tony was the Stick player on their Momentary Lapse of Reason album. Honestly had no idea the Chapman Stick and the lap steel existed before hearing Floyd. Even though Guy Pratt did the bass on tour (love his work too by the way), it's nice to learn about some of the more obscure instruments that played a part in some major group's music. Also saw Brit Floyd on their 2021 tour, one of the members played bass, trumpet, and vocals, and then brought out a stick for One Slip.

Me too... I saw a performance of Stick players in Italy. Tony was there too but didn't played. After the show they put the sticks in the handa of some lucky player... One was me!
