The NPG was STACKED with seasoned and talented musicians. That Tony was able to find a new direction for his talent, cultivate it, and leave his legacy within Prince's music says A LOT and any Purple Fan should at least respect that, if not fully enjoy it. Thank you Tony for your art, and thank you Michael for your journalism. Great episode!

FABULOUS interview!!! 💜 I was lucky enough to meet Tony back in the day, and saw him and the boys performing in some European after shows. What an open and humble guy Tony is . Much respect and thank you Mike for putting this together! Tony’s iconic raps on Live 4 Love and Willing and Able are his finest moments and the songs just wouldn’t be the same without his input.

Excellent interview! I'm an old-school Prince fan, I started out with him at the very beginning and started fading out when the rap stuff started coming in the mix, but here in this interview with Tony M gave me brand new respect for that whole era! Your interviewing style is fantastic! We know this guy from start to finish, heard very little from you and he did most of the talking which is the way it should be, thank you!

One of my favorite Prince Eras was in the 90's with the NPG. The rap stuff didn't bother me at all. I think Prince was the funkiest when he was with Tony M, Doug E. Fresh and those guys. Songs like "Undisputed", " Count the Days", "Return Of The Bump Squad", "Push It Up", those are the hard hitters people don't even know about.

Brother Dean, I watch your content all the time but never comment. But, thanks for this interview. I was never a Tony M or Game Boyz hater, but I also wasn’t a hip-hop head so I was leery about them becoming more involved in the direction of the sound. I eventually grew to respect and then enjoy their contributions. As such, I appreciate you giving him a platform to share his story.

Albert Magnoli told my over the phone when we had a lengthy conversation that all the cutting room floor and deleted scenes got lost between Minneapolis and Los Angeles and don't exist anymore so that means all those deleted scenes of The Game Boyz filmed during Purple Rain are more than likely gone forever and that's f'ed up as they were probably all FIRE!!!

Great to see the interview. We went to the first London gigs in 1990 and met Tony and the other Gameboyz when they where crossing the street outside the hotel. We talked a while and went together to a recordstore to find and score a copy of the Black Album bootleg. They wanted to get the album. They guy behind the counter was willing to sell it but became reluctant when he saw the touraccess pass around the neck and thought he was being hassled.

This was a cool interview, BUT we have 2 be honest here...I mean, besides Get Off, NOBODY was really feeling Tony M, lyrically! The fans, critics, and just the casual listener couldn't get with his flow because it just didn't feel authentic 2 Prince's music at the time! Hell, even Prince "trying 2 Rap", as a fan, felt embarrassing, lol! And I think Prince started to realize this as well, because in the late 90s, he started incorporating TRUE MC's like Doug E.Fresh, Eve, and Chuck D in his music!👍😎

@Tony I definitely agree with you as far as Prince's selection of rappers in his music in the late 90's. Now, the context in which Prince told one of the Warner execs when he first signed that he didn't want to be considered "a black artist" is that he didn't wanna be pigeon hold as an artist. In the late 70's and early 80's the music industry was very segregated and the same type of marketing and promotion a label would GENEROUSLY give to a white artist 4 their project, that wasn't the case for black artist, so that's the reason why Prince made that comment. Now, did Prince play with racial and sexual ambiguity early on in songs like Controversy and blur the lines a bit? Yes, lol.
