In reply to the ITL; Another trick I've recently used to get sharper esses in my mix: duplicate the vocal track. Put a de-esser on the duplicate and put it to "listen" mode, which isolates the esses. Now you can mix that in with to original or treat it with distortion, EQ, comp, etc. to make it do what you want.

i'm learning a shit-ton just listening to these guys talk, and I'm not a mixer, I'm a composer / musician. I'm starting to "see" (hear) holes in the sonic landscape of my compositions. very cool.

Seriously man, you guys are too cool. My mixes have increased 10x in the past half a year. And it's not even because of ITL. It's just attitude towards the mix. It is indeed, all about 'feel'. Mixing's no longer a science for me

WOAH!! @34:28 Did I just hear Dave say that it was "dark already" BECAUSE it was 24 bit? Meaning 24 bit files are darker than 16 bit files? OR did he mean that it was dark already because of the way the producer recorded it down, and the quality of the sound was already in the file when it was sent over...and therefore he wanted it in 24 bit so he got the clearest picture of the way it was recorded from the get go? I'm totally lost on this. Just in case I didn't ask that clearly...let me rephrase it.....Is he saying that 24 bit files are naturally darker sounding than 16 bit files etc? 16 bit files are brighter? That's heavy to me because I normally associate 24 bit with more headroom....depth.... space and clarity.....not color. That's some deep stuff if that really is the case and I'd be extremely grateful if someone who is well versed in this would fill me in. Thanks.

There is better way to isolate sibilants, instead of EQ you can use FabFilter Pro-DS with Audition Triggering button, you can hear on which parts of the audio Pro-DS is triggering. This helps you choose an appropriate Threshold level as well, making sure Pro-DS is catching all necessary peaks without triggering on anything else; and use that for triggering expander.

Would you care to let us listen to short excerpts of the tracks you are talking about, because you might not know this: but not everyone is super focused on the lives of the artists you invite... We don't necessarily know what track they are talking about (even if you think it's supposed to be super famous), so being able to hear excerpts would help make sense of all the great material they are saying in the meantime. Otherwise I can't even tell if he is right or wrong :D
@RVM2M5 жыл бұрын
As much as I love the guy, I can not get on board with him mixing that absolute disaster of a track. Not even from a mix standpoint but all of the allegations of copyright infringement as well as the extremely rapey undertones!
@PRSOne10 жыл бұрын
Really? He sounded like he was making it up as he went along. Though most of Dave's interviewees seem to in comparison.
@philippes198711 жыл бұрын
Must admit, that song "blurred lines"...I don't really like it....but the way it was produced...and mixed....it has balls!...in today's pop world, hard panned isolated elements and quieter vocals is a gutsy move....bravo!
@AmpsforBuddha11 жыл бұрын
Another Excellent show guys! …I have an idea for a contest. Someone, somehow wins a day with a pro ("It's me, Dave! Let me in, man. I got the stuff"). A day of apprenticeship, where we can learn how to pull off a great mix with what we have. …Just to throw that idea out there into the universe.

In context of Dave's videos - i have picked up some good tips, but i find he only says what he is doing and never explains in steps by showing us how he is doing what he does. They are not really like tutorials in this sense. It would be nice if he showed us a process step by step , showing how to do what he is doing in practice not just in theory.
@boondawksaints10 жыл бұрын
That's because every situation is different and remember, like u said, its a tip not a tutorial

This might be a stupid question to some, but sometimes you gotta ask those questions to learn. Was blurred lines monophonic? At 23:00 Dave talked about that the effect of the panning in the song wouldn't work if the song was stereo?
@WaxingRadiance9 жыл бұрын
Go listen to it with headphones then without, you will know exactly what he means after about 30 secs of listening. It's an effect, the same way stereo was an 'effect' in the days of mono. Mr M's description of imagining the instruments as people in the room is very good. Every sentence in this interview is a gem. Good to see two friends talking shop.
