Who is better? Let me know in the comments below!
Personally, I can't choose. Both are solid drummers with very different styles. Tony is more of a hardcore drummer and Ian is more glam metal like however, Ian nowadays is very different from his original style and appearance.

I think Tony is great and very underrated. He’s got a special swing in his playing similar to the Thin Lizzy drummer. Ian is very good too.

I like both drummers 🥁🥁 because Tony played on the first two Europe albums with John Norum. John and Ian have been playing together since 1984 and both played together on the Final Countdown, Start From The Dark, Secret Society, Last Look at Eden, Bag of Bones, War of Kings and Walk The Earth !. I love Tony’s speed drumming on Europe and Wings of Tomorrow 🥁🎸and Ian’s groovy drumming on the Norum era Europe albums !🥁🎸!.

Tony Reno all the way. Jan Haugland should be thanking the lucky star , their former manager and Joey T that he got the gig. They were the bosses in Europe for almost a decade.

Very difficult question... I think Ian could not play like Tony's heavy chaotic crash, open HH, and Fill-in that plunges into thrilling that sometimes difficult to ensemble for the rest of the members. Vice versa, Tony would not be able to play like Ian as his Stable rhythm, especially Incredibly beautiful drums in ballads. I believe both great.

For this one, Anthony, I can't really choose between either Tony or Ian....like John N. and Kee, I'm a fan of both, but with Tony, to me, I think that when he was aware that EUROPE was destined for bigger things, i.e. the worldwide deal with Epic Records, he probably got stage fright at that. From my perspective, Tony was content only to tour Sweden and nearby countries within the European continent, and when Epic started making noise, he probably balked at that to the point where he didn't explain that to Joey or both John's, out of fear they'd be angry with him telling them why. So, he ended up retreating back to a more regular life. Tony might have thought that EUROPE probably would not be ready to make their international coming-out party until 1987, and not 1986. He probably imagined them spending 1985 becoming more 'seasoned', and then hit the studio sometime in the Spring of 1986, for TFC to be released around November of that same year, and touring to commence in early 1987. EUROPE made the right call in getting Ian in from Trilogy in the wake of Tony's withdrawal from the group. Ian has performed in an exemplary fashion ever since his 1st gig with EUROPE back on September 8, 1984 in Hagfors, Sweden in Folkets Park. o.o

As per comparisons in this video footage Ian Haugland is head and shoulders better than Tony Reno. Anchoring the band from the driver's seat he is rock solid, remaining consistently tight in the pocket, executing kick-ass fills implementing brilliant basic rudimental combinations at the appropriate intervals called for without overplaying. His strokes are clear, clean, equally spaced and technically just much more refined than Tony's playing. He sounds well schooled and rounded whereas Tony's playing mainly boiled down to just playing "Peter Criss" single strokes being sped up and sounding sloppy at times and he even loses the count near the end of his solo. Tony sounds "self taught" with "Garage band" inconsistencies that slipped through due to lack of a drum teacher showing him how to clean up his playing and perfecting strokes. Ian on the other hand sounds like a musically educated drive force that any sound engineer would appreciate to ensure a solid foundation in the recording studio without having to perform miracles to secure a solid beat. Don't get me wrong. Tony is NOT bad. Sometimes there is a raw energy released by self taught drummers that adds character that drum lessons may not be able to produce but Ian definitely does NOT lack in injecting energy either. Tony kinda reminds me of Lars Ulrich - Yeah he is good, BUT.......
