I was with Tony and the rest of the Leicester fan's going down to watch the fight. I have known Tony since he first walked into our amateur boxing club when he was 13 along with his dad Keith(RIP) On that night although a friend, I was really nervous, thinking Tony was not ready for Lucas, Tony fought as a man possessed, the rest is history. I still see Tony from time to time, he's still as down to earth as you can get.

Tony Sibson was more deserving of winning a world title than most British fighters today.A likeable character who didnt prattle shit but showed his boxing talents in the ring.The fact he never won a world title is irelevant.

@@brianmorecombe2726 it is. Perhaps not for the boxer, but firbthe boxing fan Sibson lives longer in the memory than say a Johnny Nelson. Johnny Nelson is forgettable while you're watching him as a pundit today. No change really from his days as a boxer.

@@Telcontar1962 TBH i`ve gone off watching boxing now and after not watching it for a long time,it gets easier to hate it.The reason being i think its corrupt,the participants in it only purely interested in that big pot of cash and they get it before they win any of the numerous world titles.Eubankjr hasnt won any world title yet poses around in a Maclaren sport car.He represents what i hate about it and i wont watch it.The Tony Sibson days was when i did watch it.

@@brianmorecombe2726 I agree. Not only what you said, but you could grow with the boxer as a viewer. I remember watching Minter from the Munich Olympics and then through his professional career on to a World Title. Maybe it's me, but it didn't matter whether it was someone like Minter or a Sugar Ray Leonard / Mark Breland /De La Hoya doing the same in the States, I got invested in the boxers because I "knew" them. Today they have 5 -10 fights and before you know it they're have a World Title shot. I don't know who they are, who they've fought, what type of fighter they looked good/bad against. What made it even worse was the CovID episode. No crowds to even generate an atmosphere. The icing on the cake is You Tube boxers getting millions to fight con men like Mayweather Jnr. Boxing was always corrupt, but its boxers had a lobmve for the sport. That guy took an already failing sport abs shot it through the head. There are one or two I like the look of, particularly Conor Benn, but for me boxing needs to go back to basics. Sort out the amateur game, make it the centre piece of an Olympics that itself has some integrity again, drop the ridiculous womens angle, and have just one world title per weight division. If boxing doesn't do something drastic it will go the same way football is going.

@@braddbradd5671 Hagler did that to everybody at the peak of his (and their) powers to be fair. Kev isn't wrong here either, Sibson was a fantastic fighter in his own right and if he were competing now he'd be a world champion. Could say that about a number of other middleweights of that era but Marvin was operating on a level few in history have reached when at his best.

@@braddbradd5671…Marvin’s most punch perfect performance was against Sibson in early 1983 …..matador V Bull but Marvin Hadith’s be on his game because of Kevin Finneghan and Sibsons performance against Minter and at this time Sibson really was the second best middleweight in the world …..in 1986 The Ring magazine asked top fighters a series of questions about his opponents..best boxer , best chin , most awkward, strongest etc etc and he had Sibson down as the strongest opponent faced ….enough praise for me for Tony …..but Marvin really was the greatest middleweight ever in my opinion…

This was a great scrap for the British Middleweight strap. Unusually, Lucas was an aggressive, come forward southpaw and not really a counter puncher, which is the natural way a southpaw fights, even against fellow southpaws. I guess that was his undoing in this bout - he had one more fight, lost that and then eye trouble forced him out of the game. Great memories, thanks for uploading.

A fight I remember over all others involving British fighters back in the late 70's. It's amazing to note just how many boxers get caught when they think they are on top and they forget about defence. We saw it just last month with White v Povetkin. Along with Hatton and Benn Sibbo gave the best value for money in British boxing for me!!

Sibson caught him with a really good uppercut in round 2, when Lucas' eye got cut that showed Sibson had the power. I watched a recent interview where Sibson stated that had Lucas not tried to brawl with him he'd probably have won, which I think was a fair statement. Great fight.

Those ‘attitude problems’ of Frankie Lucas either caused him not to be selected to represent the UK in the ‘74 Commonwealth games, or because we was not selected. He actually beat the guy who was selected. Then Lucas went off and represented St. Vincent and won the Gold medal.

Lucas was the heavy favourite for the vacant title, especially as Sibson was, I believe, a late replacement. I remember thinking, Come on, Frankie! Stop messing about and put this guy away! His trouble, of course, was that his defence didn't match his attack, like many an aggressive puncher. Sibson was a revelation. Outboxed the same year by the comebacking Kevin Finnegan, and losing the title, he went on to much better things.

Lucas made a couple of significant errors, the uppercut that cut his eye really shook him when he had Sibbo on the ropes, he should have taken notice of that and had more respect for Sibson and made it less of a brawl. The other big mistake was jumping up so quick after the second knock down in particular, he should have taken as much time as possible to recover.

Used to follow schoolboy amatuer boxing as my cousin was decent (ABA finalist) and from Leicester as was Tony Sibson. Amazingly I don't think I saw or if I did, I did not remember, Tony Sibson fight (although did sit behind him at one of the competitions and what stuck out was his modest demeanour), but I remember my cousin saying he was to be well respected. Also, Colin Jones was the boxer everyone seem to fear the most as generally knocked everyone out in the first round in all the schoolboy competitions. Once Sibson turned pro I watched more of him and followed him more. A really underrated technical boxer with super fast hands and tough as nails and as strong as an ox. In this fight, Frankie Lucas biggest mistake was going to war with him as there was only going to be one outcome.

St Vincent born Frankie Lucas was a British amateur got dropped from the GB team for the 1974 Commonwealth games. A disgusted Lucas went back to his place of birth and won Gold for St Vincent and the Grenadines 💪May he RIP

Great fight from both men.The ref was poor at the end.the fight would have been over today after the 2nd knockdown or on the first punches after the second knockdown.the ref let him take three or four he shouldn't have but that was the norm back then.

Great comment...apart from the ref being poor. It was the refereeing standard of it's time, so stopping a fight when he was back on his feet in those days would have been considered poor. We never would have been gifted the Gatti vs Ward trilogy had it not been for old school referees like Frank Capcino.

Sadly, it's often the way that a commentator goes in with a fixed idea of what is going to happen, and sticks rigidly to it. I thought it was a great contest, with both fighters landing shots 50/50. Harry was still going on about Lucas being in charge when Sibson knocked him over. Much respect to both fighters.

Noticed that too, they were some thumping body shots, but Sibson took them well and as was seen by the uppercut in round 2 that cut Lucas and stopped him in his tracks when he had Sibson on the ropes, Sibson had the power to hurt him and when he landed again it was all over.
