Tony Tosti wins the 2023 OMA Durham Region's Music Teacher of the Year Award (Short Version)

Thank you to the OMA's and thank you Durham College for organizing and hosting this wonderful event that acknowledges and celebrates some of the best musical talent in the Durham Region.
I would also like to thank all of those people that helped me achieve this milestone including the hundreds, if not thousands of students that I've taught over the years... along with their parents...and mine... for supporting and encouraging music education.
As musicians, we've all had to overcome so many hardships, obstacles, doubts and insecurities to get where we are today in our careers. That's also likely why we have so much in common.
We are BORN with music already integrated into our DNA and it becomes obvious from the moment we play, sing or write our first song. Then after several years go by, we don't WANT to play music, we NEED to. It's part of our core identity, it's who we are and how we express ourselves.
That passion for music is what fuels us as musicians to achieve more than what's expected. We simply can't be GOOD at what we do, let alone GOOD ENOUGH. Instead we strive for EXCELLENCE because EXCELLENCE is what inspires others…especially if we lead by example.
It's definitely an honor to be awarded the distinction of Music Teacher of the Year. I hope to continue sharing my passion for music and inspiring musicians to exceed their expectations, and I'll continue to share the most important lesson I'VE learned along the way; to always enjoy and respect the gift...of music.
