Tony Tuff’s digital 12” from 85- 89 are classics ie Sound clash, careless people, ram dance style, all out, just cool, upside down are the ones I remember off the top of my head.

Not as familiar with his work in that era, though the Keep The Faith set for Black Scorpio is a pretty solid digital outing for TT...

Tony Tuff made some massive tunes. Please give some time to the TWINKLE BROTHERS from Trelawney, Jamaica. They have been around since 1964. Please give them their Flowers. Jah Shaka has left us. But some of the greatest roots came with their collaborations.

Wasn't sure at first I was going to do a tribute - but ended up diving back into his music after a while and figured I'd better. That self titled album was an early Discogs purchase, I remember being stoked to have it on vinyl at last. Have a good week, thank you and take care!

I was not really familiar with Tony Tuff. I do have a Sugar Minott album and one 45 but nothing from the African Brothers. I always enjoy hearing the history of these reggae artists and about those we have lost recently. I enjoyed the needle drops as well. I never thought I would hear yodeling on a reggae record. Have a great weekend.

Tony had a very long and consistent career but did not become quite as well known as Sugar Minott - and even he is not as recognized as he should be. I'm glad I could introduce yodelling in reggae to you, that bit just makes me laugh. Have a nice weekend, take care!

The style and melody of Tony Tuff song…we want no war ( warrior )…..is similar to The Paragons ( John Holt, Howard Barrett, Don Evans )…. Man Next Door…..

I think I compared the two when someone else pointed that out...they are not exactly the same as I recall, not what I would classify as versioning the rhythm but a similar feel and progression between them...

I don't think I've heard the name Tony Tuff before, though Yabby You definitely rings a bell and definitely know Sugar Minott. I really like those brassy sounds on Gimme Wha' me Want, very reminiscent of the horns on Revolution Rock by The Clash - I would imagine they were fans of Tony. I'm pretty sure I've never heard his biggest hit, though fun to hear yodelling in reggae!
@FatCityVinyl
@FatCityVinyl 7 ай бұрын
Tony never quite achieved a level of name recognition similar to Yabby or Sugar, despite a very long and creditable career...I've really just scratched the surface here as there are more albums by him, and many singles with which I'm as yet unfamiliar! Not sure who does the horns on Gimme - hadn't thought of the Clash but they more than likely would have been familiar with him. Revolution Rock itself was loosely based on a Jackie Edwards song in Jamaica called Get Up (kzbin.info/www/bejne/pqXbk3aPgcZnetU); a singer called Danny Ray in the UK then adapted it into Revolution Rock which the Clash basically covered. Not sure how the yodelling bit in Come Fi Mash It came about - just through the improvisatory nature of the dancehall style of singing and needing to keep a live audience entertained and on their toes I guess!

Thanks from Germany for another excellent job, Doug. Always eagerly awaiting your next post... Amazing, how accomplished a songwriter and singer Tony was at an early age already (just like Sugar by the way), being only 18 when singing 'Righteous Kingdom' with the African Brothers', which, like you said, is an outstanding example of a heavy roots tune. Unfortunately, there is much more Tony Tuff stuff on my search list than in my collection, as some of his best 70s stuff is (still) only available as expensive 7" or 12". Watch out for 'Shine your light', for example! Took me quite a while to realise, that 'One big family' is on the 'Man next door' rhythm, which I would like to recommend in any version existing (Paragons, Ken Boothe, Dennis Brown,...). Sadly missed, hail to the man!
@FatCityVinyl
@FatCityVinyl 8 ай бұрын
Man Next Door! I love that song & rhythm but never connected it to One Big Family...sounds a little slowed down or tweaked so it is not quite so obvious but I hear it now...think the first version I ever heard of that was the dub on the Forward The Bass set from Blood & Fire...those African Brothers songs really are astonishingly mature for how young those men were at the time, no wonder they gathered together with talent on that level. Tony was a very consistent artist over the years, unfortunately with much of his output scattered across a variety of singles for different producers and labels...maybe a reason he is less well known than he should be...Shine Your Light being one I don't think I've heard, will seek that out...one day I will have to tackle Sugar himself, but man what an intimidating task that will be...thanks for tuning in, rest in power Tony!

@@FatCityVinyl There is another tune by Tony called Next door neighbor/All day Rockers, which has nothing to do with the Man next door riddim, but is a great (+ hard to find) piece of music too. I would very much appreciate if you put Sugar on top of your to-do-list! Keep rockin an' swing!

When it came to naming best reggae vocalists by the 80s: We often mentioned: Gregory Isaacs, Dennis Brown, Freddie McGregor as well as Sugar Minott, Al Campbell and OF COURSE TONY TUFF..RIP🙏,..And, yes No Warrior is a fantastic song and my introduction to Tony Tuff's music long before I actually discovered who the artist behind this song was..The updated version of We no want no Warrior called One Big Family from the Tony Tuff album of 1982 is actually the one I prefer: Heavier bass line and a more orchestral feel.

A very consistent artist over the years who deserves to be counted among those names...come to think of it No Warrior might have been my introduction to him as well...had the album on cd-r for many years and later had to get it on vinyl...Tuff Selection escaped my notice until researching this tribute to him...probably assumed it was a compilation or some such...will have to keep an eye out for that one as well as Reggae In City/Best Of...

The African Brothers sound great. I also listened to some Tony solo. I checked out Keep The Faith, Come Fi Mash It and Lovers Rocking And Skanking. Just yesterday I had no idea who Tony Tuff was. Thanks to your videos Doug I am now aware of some of the prominent reggae artists that I missed along the way. BTW. What the heck does Come Fi Mash It mean? Excellent post brother Doug. I appreciate how you can raffle off all of this incredible info without using any notes. Have a super weekend~ Rob/Boston

Hello Rob, the African Brothers were a fantastic group indeed, unknown to me (and many others I'm sure) until that Easy Star compilation came out in the early 00's. One day I will have to take a look at Sugar Minott who is a major figure in reggae and also got his start in the African Brothers. But that will be a major project that is intimidating to even consider. Glad you enjoyed Tony, I learned a lot more about him in doing this. Still not a lot of interviews or resource material out there that I could find other than what I have in my collection. Come Fe(To) (S)Mash It just means he is coming to give a great performance and raise the energy level at the dance or party. Have a nice weekend yourself, it feels like summer is here, it has been hot the last few days. Shorts & sandals weather ~
