Jack Smith I’m not sure I follow. Original? Long before Grunge there was this little style of music that came to be known as The Blues. And let’s not pretend original 70s punk didn’t have it’s share of the same pathos. Grunge was more likely just a natural progression on similar themes (from guys raised on a lot of Led Zeppelin), and also somewhat of a response to the perceived vacuousness of mid-late 80s big hair glam rock. I am quite obviously not a pro music historian and could have this all wrong but I think there’s some validity to my perspective.

None of this story stacks up. 1) If you look at Nirvana / SP's 1991 tour dates, they're never in the same state at the same time apart from Boston MA on Sept 23rd where they both played the Axis. 2) Billy says she flew off to Minneapolis - where Nirvana played on 14th October 1991. True, Courtney was in Minneapolis and got with Kurt, but Smashing Pumpkins were touring Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia at that time. The day he's talking about, Nirvana were in Chicago, and SP's were in Alabama.

Man, I was a huge Pumpkins fan as a kid back in the Siamese Dream to Machins era. In 1992 it was so uncool to like Pearl Jam. But Pumpkins got a pass. All these years later, turns out Pearl Jam were actually the good guys.
