Gabriel is not described as an archangel in the Bible, he's just referred to as being an Angel. There's is only one named Archangel in the Bible and it's Michael

what makes me kinda sad is that these poor archangels don't really have much of a personality, nothing beyond "heil YHVH". Gabriel is a bit explored in SMT 2, but the others are sadly quite unexplored despite their importance.

@@Tony4You SMT team does not help, making everything they can to show us how awful it is to follow law or chaos. So long for the "there is not good ending, you follow your beliefs" initial promise. They even "corrected" the law and chaos ending of Strange Journey in Redux, making them more neutral. I think that law and chaos have unfair treatment by SMT authors (except for DS Overclocked, and the original Strange Journey).

Redux still frames new neutral as the perfect route when it’s literally just as bad as old neutral but the game massages your ego. New law goes all « we’re doing brainwashing, but NICER brainwashing! Totally different! See we don’t hate law!». SJR doesn’t improve the endings (and making them happier does not mean they’re better written, because they’re absolutely not), it just frames them in a good way that satisfies fragile fake smt fans. Old neutral is like you doing drugs and your parents find out. New neutral is like you doing drugs without ever being found out. What a good message to send to players! You don’t need to improve yourself if you’re never faced with the consequences of your actions! Just don’t get grabbed! Totally fits humanism, I’m sure Rabelais would agree with you Atlus. Humanity shouldn’t improve, amazing! Way to not understand anything from your journey through the schwartzwelt. It’s funny because George spells it out for you how shitty old neutral was, only for new neutral to be the exact same! « Knowing the schwartzwelt could be destroyed has lead humans to never improve » (I’m paraphrasing but it is the meaning they were trying to convey.) They made law almost too good in that game. 8th day was entirely dedicated to delete every flaw associated with law. It embodies all my issues i have with neutral routes, they feel too golden. Even the chaos rep is at his best with the law ending and becomes a better person. Meanwhile you get a shitty cliffhanger for chaos. Woo yeah the kid with the power of a demon whose only feat was forcing God to actually come down and fight him, yet still losing, is totally gonna beat God this time in his own realm, where he’s actually at full power. Sure you get stupid offhand forced anti-law comments by Atsuro to make it look morally grey but, lmao, it’s not. What makes law interesting are its problems. Smt’s alignments aren’t things you should believe in nor take seriously, they’re either too extreme, completely idiotic (Redux), or sad caricatures of real philosophies. So they might as well be entertaining. Which neutral fails to be for me. Stripping Law of any flaw is like rewriting Voltaire’s Candide but deleting every instance of a human being evil (you’d only have the Eldorado part haha).

They didn't make them more neutral, they just made following Chaos and Law not awful. Fixed what you complain about at the start. OG SJ propably had worst endings, the main difference being that even neutral was bad. For the world that is, that doesn't mean story is bad, just that it was incredibly bleak and you chose your kind of hell, instead of choosing the path you wanna take. In SJR they are somewhat more reasonable, and it's one of few games where every aligment gets a fair treatment.

IMO they are the most inconsistent characters in regards their power, somerimes they are a joke (Nocturne and V), an endgame threat (I, II and IV) and sometimes so powerful that their pressence means the end of the world like in DeSu Overclocked how Metatron tries to brings them to the battle.

Like the fact in that game them being called upon into battle means Armageddon(Even though that's already happened in most of the smt titles hah)and that's how they should be. The seraphim are the big league of the heavenly host and their presence should be as such.

Gabriel is probably my favorite of the archangels. I love the serenity and peacefulness aspect in the design in smt. Then again I’ve always loved the divine and herald race in general due to how much help I’ve gotten from them in game.

@@Tony4You Why do you dislike them? I think they fit. I dislike the humanoid designs probably for the SAME reason you dislike the radical designs of SMTIV. A lot of the upper angels in SMT start to deviate from humanoid and go into more biblical depictions with Thrones, Cherubs, Seraphs, etc. I believe the Archangels should be the same. PLUS their robotic like Angel's redesign in SMTV and Metatron/Sandelphon. So you like Metatron's design and Sandels... But the Archangels is where you draw the line? I'm a consistency kind of guy. So imo a mix match of V with angel and then all the upper looking angels being robotic is perfect. The Archangels designs are just perfect imo. We're not meant to comprehend them.

I admit, I’m not an expert on SMT but from what I’ve heard the original SMT game was (among other things) a critique of modern society…..and while they might be portrayed as “bad”, I consider it to more “ambiguous”. There’s also the way that the Japanese people tend to see religion, and I don’t mean just Christianity but the whole concept of religion in general. But either way it’s a work of fiction, so there’s no need to take things too serious.

One thing I always found interesting is how, in spite of them being called Archangels, they're all actually Seraphim. Because of the Angelic Order, this can be unnecessarily confusing, even though it really isn't--for me, at least. But on that same subject, even in Megami Tensei, where separate Archangels and Seraphim exist, Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, and Uriel all look distinctively unique from not just the other angels, but from themselves. As much as I love Kaneko's original designs, I'll be honest, the depictions from SMT4 have been growing on me. They really capture the incomprehensible yet awesome holy power that they possess; they also give me massive Bayonetta vibes too lol. And just coming from a language and philological nerd like myself, it's really cool how much Hebrew I've indirectly learned from your channel!! For example, I've taken note how names ending in the suffix "-el" are somehow related to God, and because of that, it's made me look at many of the series' demons with Hebrew-derived names in a brand new light. The angelic demons of MegaTen have been some of my personal favourites, but they haven't gotten the presentation and attention they deserve until now. I'm really glad your channel keeps uploading, and I'm so thankful for all the content you've provided. Thank you, Mr. Tony4You!!

El is the hebrew word for God :D In Kaballah there are angels with the same name but different functions, for example Archangel Michael and Seraphim Michael would be two different entities sharing the same name, they see the name more as a function than as a name like how we use it.

Interestingly, because the misunderstanding behind the name “Lucifer” in the Book of Isaiah (as well as ‘Lucifer’s’ cultural importance and the proliferation of the Book of Enoch which people have connected Satanail to be Satan/Lucifer) many people of Christian tradition understand the 4 archangels to be Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, and Lucifer.

I know quite a bit of people dunk on the smt4 designs because they are from a guest artist who "didn't follow the rules of creating a demon" (ya'll should know who I'm talking about), but I think in terms of what they represent in smt4, I really like them. When you look at their designs and compare them to their roles in the story, it is very clear the game is trying to tell you that these angels are not normal compared to the others, they are really important and while they have very vague humanoid aesthetics they are clearly creatures that are modeled to be God's followers and minions and are not to be messed with. Its really sad that recently SMT4 has been getting crapped on for pretty petty reasons and whenever you praise things about it you get called an apologist or "oh you're a new fan so you're more likely to forgive errors". Being in this fandom when you are aware of those types of fans are tough. TL;DR SMT4 archangels are underrated

You can have all four in your party, easiest to do if you are Bethel aligned and choose the Bethel ending. My favourite was Gabriel. She had high ice pieroma and Ice Age, a skill I particularly coveted. She executed the coup de gras on Lucifer and took out a morning star with Glacial Blast. Totally badass. If you did have an angel protector, I'd want it to be Gabriel.

What always makes me wonder is why, in english at least, Michael is pronounced with the "ae" as a diphthong, i.e. the name only has two syllables, where most other names that end in the suffix -el (the "god" part) phonetically separate it, e.g. Gabriel, Uriel, Raphael, etc have three syllables. Wonder why that is.

Hmm that's a good question. As far as I know the Merkabah is God's chariot, which is referenced in the biblical texts regarding Elijah. He was brought up into heaven with a flaming chariot much like the Merkabah. I'd have to do more research but it would be very interesting

Legit though, this video is a great analysis of the bibliographical angels and how they relate to each other. I could never imagine how you decide which mythos to go with since most religions devoted to Christ and God have their own versions of the bible.

I personally like far more the designs of the Archangels in Devil Children, as I find their mainline designs a bit generic. Just as a few examples, Uriel is a knight with a flaming armor, and Raphael is an angel doctor. (Taking the meaning of his name rather literally.) But I HAVE to mention Raphael's incarnation from the Devil Children Light And Dark anime, who while at first is the Comic Relief character. He ends up hooking up with Rangda (Who here is a cute girl with pink skin instead of an ugly witch) and manages to act as a dentist to a freaking Hydra! I think this might be one of the only pieces of Megaten material where a male angel not only ended up with a female demon, but it also did NOT end in tragedy!

@@christopherbravo1813 It is worth mentioning that YHVH straight up DOES NOT exist in any of the Devil Children continuities. Instead, the creator of the Devil Children world is an original creator goddess known as Hoshigami. The Light And Dark anime has almost all of its episodes on a Daily Motion channel, but a number of episodes (From 9 go around 20 I believe) are missing. I believe there was a youtube channel that had the missing episodes that you could find by putting the series's japanese name. However I dont know if its still around. There is also the alternative that, if you are willing to go the "BEING A PIRATE IS ALRIGHT WITH ME!!!" Route. You could try to look up the series on Nyaa torrents. (Cant remember if the full series is there though) A pain in the ass that while the anime based on the Gameboy Color games had a full re-release with all of the episodes, the Light And Dark anime only had VHS releases. And I dont know if it has gotten anything as of now. (Also, obvious side note. All of this stuff is untranslated.)

Amazing video as always I'd would amazing if you covered Islamic archangels. They share Gabriel and Michael. There is Azrael Who is the angel of death. It is said that he have 4 faces, 4000 wings, and 70,000 feet, and his whole body consists of eyes and tongues whose number corresponds to the number of humans inhabiting the Earth. Israfil (one of the best designs in smt in my opinion) who blows the trumpet in judgment day similar to trumpeter from book of revelations.

There's a total of 10 Archangels according to the Kabbalah and a majority of them are acknowledged by most Abrahamic Religions to some capacity. But saying they are all archangels is basically lumping them in with their lower class counterparts. The 10 span the entire choir hierarchy.

I always found it interesting that angels were called demons. I did a bit of research and found that it's not too far from how humans would see them. In fact it's also referenced as such by the works of several occultists and prophets. Angel meaning messenger of the Lord, but what is an angel that does not work for the Lord? Well we saw that one third rebelled and "became demons". Pretty fascinating honestly and for biblical or even peripheral texts to mention this incredibly interesting and makes me wonder if that's why the SMT team went with the description they did for demons in their games.
