Tony was asked , Why do you sing the American songbook, he answered, because in a few minutes, it tells a story. He tells the story with such love..

Tony B passed away 2 days ago, July 21, 2023, at 96.....I miss him already. I watched this video with Diana Krall 4 years ago and was so astounded by his performance I ordered the CD immediately and have listened to it everyday on my way to work. It sounds new and fresh Everytime. It was his time to return home as it will be for each of us someday, but I can't help but wish he could have stayed a few more years with us. See you up there, Tony🌟🕊💖

I listened to it on a daily commute myself once for a few years! My mom was a Tony fan in my youth, and so I learned to appreciate him then…my uncle introduced me to Diana after her Love Scenes album and then my daughter gave me their duets CD about a decade later and it was the perfect collaboration and I just. Don’t. Tire of it.

Me ne rammarico. Ti chiedo scusa e perdono.

Thanks for your comment, David Caruso. When he played here in Winnipeg for an audience of a thousand, he put down the mic to sing a closing number -- and his voice filled our concert hall. I wasn't a part of the 'meet and greet' with Tony after the show, but spotting his Cadillac SUV ahead of me, heading a block away to our most important hotel, I followed and while my wife waited in the car, I spoke to him as he emerged with his daughter. I was holding my copy of his autobiography. "Mr. Bennett," I said, "I was at your show. That was not merely the best performance by an 83 year old -- that was the finest performance by anyone that I have ever seen." He kindly extended his hand (warm and . . . frail like a grandfather's) and inscribing my copy of his book, he told the young man accompanying him (who'd offered a big Sharpie pen) 'No . . . this deserves a better pen," and he reached into his breast pocket for his own fine-tipped pen: "To Mark, with thanks." My wife said when I got back into the car, "Let me shake the hand that shook his hand" (Tony's been her favorite great singer).

This one is really late in Tony Bennett's storied career. But it is clear as a bell that he never lost his artistic instinct for timing or loving and delivering the lyric. A true master. I love that the director doesn't shy away from Mr. Bennett reading the lyrics at this point in his life. Classic Americana like no other. Thank you.
@hezigler2 жыл бұрын
This is a great American pop song. (My very favorite.) The lyrics are both dated and timeless. The lyrics, by Ira Gershwin, are in the American vernacular of the late 1930s. The music composed by Ira's younger brother, George Gershwin. Written in 1937, it is the last song these two brothers collaborated before George passed from this life. It is one of the greatest declarations of Love of all time.
