If everything in life was as rugged as my old K200D. In 8 years I have gone through four lawnmowers (time for a new one again this spring), four cars , a couple of wheelbarrows, three pairs of glasses ..... etc, but the old Pentax just won't give up. It's been through the ice into the river with me twice, spent many days with me on snow shoes at -25 C for 4-6 hour sessions, bounced off trees in the forest, coated with gobs of pine gum, let me half submerge it in a wet forest floor to get a good angle on a mushroom, got dropped off my bench onto the concrete floor a couple or three times, rolled off the car seat many times as i hit the brakes to dodge down a side road or respect a red light. It is a bit dated and has a few scratches, but still works as good as it ever did and with only just shy of 80.000 shutter activations, it likely will be around a while yet. I plan to purchase another camera within the next year and will keep the K200 for a spare. Not sure what to replace with, but it will be a Pentax, likely a K-3.

+Stephen MacIntosh I just got a Pentax K-S2 as my first DSLR instead of a Nikon D5500 for this exact reason. And took it out in a hail storm on day one. The camera just shrugged it off, meanwhile I was soaked and freezing. I just wish I saw this video first, then I'd have some really nice looking landscapes.

Learning to shoot with Beginner/ less expensive gear makes you work that bit harder for every shot. In time You'll learn to be a better photographer. When it's time to move on to a more expensive technically demanding camera and better gear your ability will be far more comprehensive without the shortcuts in my opinion. Practice and Patience is Key :)

Nice - Pentax finally makes an appearance on your channel (even if a low end model). Look forward to your take on the full frame Pentax launching final quarter of 2015. K3 worthy of a look too. Paired with Sigma 18-35mm and Tamron 70-200mm it is a great package.

Loved it. Just think of all the people with low budgets that want great results with what they have. This one is for photography. Coming from India where even a camera had to be a smuggled one in the early 70"s when I started photography, I had no choice but to use my fathers 1960 model camera and my grandmothers; I don't know when she bought it, Zeiss Ikoflex. I made them work satisfactorily,. It lead me to the darkroom where I spent many years of my adult life. Yes, This one video makes it all worthwhile. Photograpy wins and it shows that anyone with passion can achieve wonders. Thank you Tony and Chelsea. This one is a keeper.

This is absolutely one of your best videos. I have used Pentax for many years now, and you have proven a point I make all the time. The camera no matter the brand is only as good as the Photographer's passion and skill, and that a less expensive camera in hand is better than none at all. I have seen Photographers with older Cannons shoot much better photos than others with top of the line Cannons.

They got a observation area for photographers and hikers to see the city. People were looking at me taking about 100 or photos of the city skyline, of each part of the sunset. I REALLY like the work-arounds you provide on free/low-cost software for operations normally done in Photoshop & Lightroom. I am a hobbyist with a used T2i and the kit 18-55mm lens, and wouldn't choose to spend my discretionary income on expensive software. Thank you very much for this; It shows me that you are serious about helping photographers of all stripes to improve and explore their abilities. I am commenting on this today specifically because I just watched a Spam-laden video full of sales pitches that showed exactly the stacking technique to reduce noise that you have shown here, all simply and honestly put. I am really enjoying your videos. Your book will be here in a couple days and I am really looking forward to it!

I"m really glad to have learned something, today. I've never used or even considered image averaging to bring out sharpness, reduce noise, and lengthen the exposure. Heck, I didn't even know about it as an option. I'm going to go out today and try it. I also really like your mention of GIMP. I started with that before I got into Photoshop, and it served me really well. I hope new photographers that want to up their game see this and try it out.

Oh I am not undermining the fact that you also pay for durability along with convenience and sure, some added features, but I guess the trick is to analyze what you know and what you need. If you are starting out, for example, you do not need a camera that costs a couple grand.

+ahall3823 did Tony's "cheap" camera break during the taking of over 100 images? No. Pentax camera bodies are some of the most durable out there. Most of them are weather sealed something the big 2 do NOT offer at the same price point.

With Gimp you can find a median filter in the G'MIC plugin--in the layers group see Blend [median]. G'MIC also has an align filter, although I've never used it. To align layers I use the align_image_stack command from the Hugin package. Note that the "Align Visible Layers" command in Gimp proper works totally differently--aligning top, bottom, centered, etc. much like a word processor. I like to use the median filter when shooting flash for interiors. I move the flashes around for each exposer, thus moving the shadows and reflections. The median filter then produces a beautiful, smooth flash layer.

I do love these classic T&C videos that showed what you could do with cheap gear. I do feel that there was a minor point that wasn't covered: If you are going the cheap route, do not expect to get good resale value for the camera. If you go the cheap route, make sure the price you pay is as absolutely low as you can get it because the number of shots you are going to take is going to use your shutter much *much* more frequently than a higher-priced equivalent. High shutter count isn't necessarily a bad thing, but many people use it as the primary deciding factor when it comes to buying used gear. Think in terms of miles on a used car, it gets more importance placed on it than the other things that are more likely to break, but it gives you a general idea of how heavily it has been used. Getting a shutter replaced is expensive, but with how good modern build quality is, it's extremely unlikely you will ever need to get the shutter replaced unless you truly are a professional and shoot far, far more than your average hobbyist.

A lot of fun and informative! And, finally, a Pentax shows up, even if it is ancient and sporting the older kit lens formulation (the one you had is the AL; the notably superior upgraded one from a few years back is the AL II, and, then there's the brand new one...). But, the budget was $100, after all. Hopefully, you'll get a K3 or K-S2 loaner from Pentax and run it through its paces. They're a lot of fun and feature packed. I use my Nikons less and less these days, not that they're not great, but Pentaxes have an appealing quirkiness and provide more bang for the buck.

Done right - with a skosh of pixel-level shift between each frame - that image-averaging technique becomes a pixel-stacking technique, one that also sharpens. I'm trialing this method while also adapting medium format lenses w/ Tilt/Shift. Tiled frames are zero-parallax 36x54 (TILT/SHIFT) or 54x54mm (Double Shfit). But of course 95 - 140 MP aren't enough, I want to refine the resolution as far as possible.

I like the tip to cheat using an ND filter using averaging. Sometimes you've forgotten it or in some lighting situations it would just take an insanely dark ND to get a long exposure. It's a good thing to keep in mind for some artistic options.

The good thing about Pentax cameras is the compatabiliy with legacy K mount lenses which are both high quality and relatively affordable. I was blown away the first time I saw what my K-x produced with a £120 50mm 1:1.4 lens from the 1980s, the difference between a kit lens and a "proper" lens is night and day. If you want to learn photography on a budget a Pentax is ideal.

This has blown my mind. Basically: if you don't need fancy features like +10 fps burst and low noise performance, with some time you can get better results with amateur gear. Thank you.

Tony, you did a great job demonstrating the significant advantage of buying a quality body with quality glass. Time is money. How much time was needed to get one finished image? Extrapolation that for an entire shoot and the effective cost of shooting with the Pentax is substantially more than the cost to shoot with the D810. Also, bear in mind that the 10 minutes invested in the field making the pano sets is time you could have been spending getting detail shots and other angles of your subject. In other words, not only is your cost (time = money) greater using the cheap camera, you're also missing shots - shots that could be making you money.

The problem with this argument is it only applies to working professionals. Camera companies through their advertising try to convince amateurs (the largest market by the way) that the only way to get the best images is by buying their most expensive products. Tony proved that this is patently false.

Nice video. It makes me feel not so bad because of my cheap camera. Wish you could make some more editing technics of how we can improve the quality of photos taken by cheap cameras.

On the Pentax picture at the end, after all that work, there is a clear misalignment visible. It's very clear when you look at the center window about a third up from the bottom.

Great video! It really shows the struggle, the patience and the passion of the "pennyless" photographer, vs the quick "snapshot style" of the photographer that can afford a better but more expensive camera. Keep up the good work, thanks! :)

Interesting, started out with a K200 and now rocking a K-5 Can't wait till they make a Nikon D810 vs Pentax K-1 video! (K-1 being Pentax's first digital full frame camera)

This video is AWESOME. For landscape photography - Truly increase actual photographic knowledge for exponentially better/higher quality photo. Yes, the Nikon D810 could benefit from the techniques as well. How bout a video that will incorporate exposure bracketing as well? The time/hassle spent is still much less than setting up a view camera. The majority of your time and effort is still getting to the location, finding the spot, waiting for good light etc anyway.

Great video! I would honestly like more videos showing using everything of cheaper equipment to create better technical quality content. I know that my people use Canon and Nikon's beginner DSLRs for professional work (like 700D, 100D etc.)

Amazing video! The funny thing is, this process was the exact thing I first thought about when I was learning about these things (like zoom, noise, etc.). I was thinking about how a zoom is theoretically a multiplier of your sensor's resolution (theoretically because it would only work if the grid's images that are about to be composed are perfectly aligned).

First time seeing someone using ICE, that's neat! :) I've been using ICE even with my Note 4 and S4 smartphone pics and sometimes surprising myself. ICE is really useful and can even auto-fill some sky/grass/simple surface. I love using it. Add some post-processing with, in my case, Corel AfterShot 3, and you can get entry-to-mid-DSLR-looking pics with even average smartphones. I am going to buy my first DSLR soon, and I've been leaning Pentax, actually. I love shooting outdoors and in harsher weather(my Note 4 died on me cause of that) and I've been considering refurbs of Pentax K-3II or K-70. I can see myself using these techniques still, I kinda do it by default, take 3-6 pics to later stitch in ICE for a huge nice pic. The D810 is friggin good. So much time saved.

Great video! only thing I would disagree on is doing this handheld - a little bit of shift forward, backwards, or side to side depending on the shot can introduce parallax errors which the software may not be able to totally overcome.

i agree with you tony! it can be done, it's just making things easier to have the more expensive gear. It's the reason why i want to get a camera from pentax. I will need more time editing them. But i will get some fun results out of the pictures. Besides i learn more working the cheaper way :P

Now, just do Image Averaging with the D810, or even D850.. That’s get you quite an insane result.
