I was sceptical about the J5 when I bought it last week considering it doesn't top any "best of" list. I must say I totally love this camera. I particularly love the touch screen, and the compact size- no more sore wrists carrying a D7000 and a D7100 body!

I bought a J5 in late 2019 on a lark. The 2.7x crop is actually pretty handy! On a tripod, it gives a D750 with a teleconverter a run for it's money.

Nice video, good job Tony doing training on a camera you obviously don't care for. I love the Nikon 1 series, but it's not my main camera system... still, today buying used, Nikon 1 stuff can be dirt cheap and for what it does, it does it very well. The J5 is my "walking around" camera, unlike my Sony a6500 with the 10-30 pancake it fits in my pocket. BTW Tony if you read this, you totally cracked me up on the 32mm 1.2 lens, recommending just going out and buying a cheap Canon body and a 85 1.8. I can't disagree with you, I love the 85 1.8 Canon (criminally underrated lens). Having said that, I also own the Nikon 1 1.2 (I bought a demo for half retail price) and it is an astoundingly good lens. Right up there with the best glass I own, and I own some good glass. The limiting factor, of course, is the sensor of the Nikon 1 system, but even still, with the J5 and that lens, it's CREAM to shoot portraits (just keep that ISO at 160!) Thanks for doing this, I always enjoy your stuff. PS: I know you think the Nikon 1 70-300 lens is both way too expensive (we agree on that) and a wonky size for a 1 inch sensor, but I absolutely love mine. LOVE it. The combo of the V3 and that lens lets me go birding with 1/10th the gear and bring home as good of shots as guys lugging around 20 pounds worth of stuff, if not better (because I'm able to track a lot faster, not throwing around huge amounts of weight in front of me). To each their own!

Very nice, indeed, thank you! A common issue is mentioned here regarding WIFI/NFC downloading: “… it’s gonna get a thumbnail from every picture …” Select: Menu / Setup / Reset file numbering / Yes (Nikon 1 J4 menu) in order to create a new memory space, this is for separating photo sessions into chunks on the memory card, each chunk gets another leading number. Then you can download each session separately instead of downloading ALL the pictures each time, pointless if the number of pics is growing large! It took me a while to find this out on my J4, I saved the pics, erased the card and restarted doing the proper way.

The bulb operation is really an issue that you have just mentioned. As a possessor of recently purchased second hand Nikon1 j5 I came across a suggestion to get around this and it could be to use the touch screen in the extended position and just tap it lightly to take a shot. I haven't tried it myself but its worth a try.

IIRC the rx100 line is known for its brilliant lowlight performance for its size. Given this has the same sensor as the mach 3 can I expect similar performance?

A Nikon 1 was my first digital camera. With the 18.5 1.8 mm lens I did my first paid photoshoot with a nude model for a cigar Lounge although we made sure the non PG parts were hidden. I did have some issues going from Pro film having to learn that the old digital cameras did not have as wide of latitude of exposure range as film funny how that's changed... but while it was a simple camera and I quickly outgrew it I'm going to buy another J5 because you can pick them up for a super cheap and it's worth having just for nostalgia.

55-300mm dx VR lens with the ft1 adaptor works nicely with my V2 giving a reach of 810mm and still lightweight. While auto focus isn't as fast as native nikon 1 lenses it's still reasonable. Given that the native cx 70-300mm lens is around $1000, the dx 55-300 vr is the same weight and 1/3 of the price but the ft1 adaptor adds 200 grams putting the setup over the mount maximum weight of 560 grams, but I haven't had any issues, just don't leave the setup hanging around your neck freely while walking. Image quality is reasonable, comparable to the cx kit lenses 10-30 and 30-105, it will auto focus while filming but I don't think the advanced functions like face recognition and tracking work seeing as you're limited to the central focus point.

Hello Tony, greetings from germany, i have a simple yet long question, if i would buy for an example a a7s with an f4 lens or a d750 with a f2.8 lens which one would be better in noise performance? because the a7s body itself can handle higher ISO's better than the d750 but then theres also the aperture of the lenses, i dont know which way i should go, currently im using a nikon d7100, it sure fits my needs but its almost broke and i believe its time for an upgrade since i saved a lot of money for a long time.. puhh thats it!

stepping down from f4 to f2.8 will negate any difference in noise performance between the two cameras. Get whichever you think has the better lens selection or controls for you.

The video looks better but I've noticed your new black magic cameras alias and moire for a while. I wonder if anyone makes any filters for them. I know my 6D had terrible alias and moire and I put a VAF-6D filter in the front of the sensor and now I can't get the thing to moire, even with the most extreme patterns. In using the 5D and 6D it seems this third party filter is better than the one Canon puts in the 5D. Too bad it's one small company and they can't make it for all cameras.

Nice video, it looks like a cool camera! How do you get the pictures you and Chelsea take onto your phones for Instagram? I always get the pics, put them on my computer, put them on Google Drive, and download them onto my tablet for Instagram! Quite a pain! I want to pass on something i learnt using it with nikon j5. I initially had some bother connecting my pixel pro 6 to the camera. First of all select wifi ssd on camera then look for it in your phone wifi set up... A few weeks ago Google gave us VPN I was struggling to connect to camera when I suddenly thought " turn VPN off ' which I did and bingo!! Phone and camera connected! Another thing. I found that I couldn't download the Nikon app from the Google play store! I had to go to the Nikon website for the app. ( You can also get the Nikon1 j5 manual as well).

Guy on Tumblr makes gifs of streams and stuff, and they are so razor sharp. I PMed him and asked what gear he used. He said this camera and a Leica Summicron lens...Analog i think it was, whatever that means. Wow! I guess I learned how important a great lense is. I looked them up, and they went for like 15,000. I only have one big question... why?Why do a tutorial for a camera that you obviously don't like at all. On my side, I really enjoy the J4 and its many interesting features like the fast shooting speed, the fast focussing, the touch screen, the Wi-fi combined with miops and the Iphone 5, it ends up to be a powerfull tool for very creative photography. In my case, it's just for fun, and with the little money it costed me, I can now invest in a good PC geared for video editing.By the way, of all the bad reviews of the one system that I a saw on the Internet, none comes from owners. It says something, no?

Why even deal with wireless, tony? this thing has a micro sd card and you have a smartphone with a micro sd slot.. wouldnt it be pretty easy to just put the card into your phone? no app required and no stress with nfc and connecting.. i would say it takes under 1 minute to set it up (unless you have a phone where you need to remove the battery to access the sd slot)
