Anyone know where to get a Nikon 1 lens repaired???

My 32/1.2 is currently in for repair Tucson Camera Repair. The iris went bad. They were able to (eventually) get a replacement part from Nikon after a roughly 3 month back order.

@@michaelatlas8072 here in Germany you can still have them repaired at some Nikon service partners. The iris problem is quiet common and some claim Nikon never acknowleged that it was a build problem from their side and repairs should be free. Still, as it stands, people have to pay and the quote from official Nikon service partners is prohibitively expensive. So I am wondering, how much does Tucson Camera Repair charge? Thank you.
@QuicknStraight9 ай бұрын
Yeah, that's a problem these days, spare parts. I had a 10-30mm that stopped zooming, back in 2021, due to a ribbon cable problem, and took it to the Nikon Service Centre here in Manila, and they said there's no spare parts for them! All they could do was check it and see if they could cobble together a fix, which they did manage to do somehow! I was impressed! And it was quite cheap, too. But I later sold it, with the repair listed for the buyer. It's a problem when these electrical lenses fail and there's no spares!

I said it before and I'll say it again: the Nikon 1 cameras were way ahead of their time paving the way for others. Just think about it: Nikon J1/V1 had Hybrid AF (a rarity in those days), dual gain sensor (an even bigger rarity) and 60 fps burst rate in RAW mode, a feature that's still hard to find in most cameras today. I had first the J1 and then the V1. I preferred the J1 with the 10/2.8 lens for its size (and excellent battery life), but the V1 certainly had a bunch going for it: deeper buffer, EVF, sharper screen and a mic jack were all great extra features.

Love that you gave the 1 a chance. A really under appreciated camera system. As a camera hoarder I can safely say this is one of the most inspiring tool. Every time I bring it I kind of know I’ll come back with “worse” results than on the other gear, but still it joins me again on the next trip. As for the V2 it’s just an ok mix of the two others. Image quality is better on the V1, and the V3 really should have had the J5 sensor. Too bad about the lens prices and flimsy build quality. I’m almost terrified breathing on my 32mm, and I’ve had countless 10-30/30-110 in for service while they still did it for free. Anyways, thanks for killer content😊

Love that. Super bummer they cheaped out on some of the components as that is really the downfall of the system. I totally love almost everything else about it.

So far I've amassed a collection of: 1x Black V1 with the two available external flashes; 3 black j1's (not keeping any of these because I can't live without a viewfinder and these purchases included lenses that I was after), 1 of the AW1 with the 10-30mm lens (can't wait to take this on my trip to Miami and see how it fairs under water); the 32mm, 2 of the 10-30mm pd, 1 18.5mm, 1 10mm, one 6.7mm to 13mm, and that's it so far. I'm still after that long long telephoto zoom but it's incredibly expensive and not easy to find. I struck gold with the 32mm. It was included with a 10-30mm with one of the J1s. The listing on eBay was incorrect (seller listed the 32mm as the 10mm) but I could tell from the photos. So far all in before selling the J1's I'm at about $800 for the collection. Is the V3 worth it do you think vs the V1? If so I'll probably add that one too. The one thing I'm worried about long term is how long any one of these electronic lenses are going to last. Most seem to suffer from the plastic gear for the aperature either coming off inside the lens or it breaking a tooth. I'm in electronics by nature so the tear downs of the lenses don't seem too bad but probably not for the faint of heart either (if electronics aren't your thing). Seems as though there's a dedicated enthusiast from Taiwan that has fixed almost all the 1 series lenses and offers the service (long live dpreview forums I hope). However it does look like other than aperature gear issues, the major components of these lenses like circuit boards, ribbon cables, etc are in short supply or even no supply from Nikon. My hope is maybe the enthusiast community will build up and there will be some engineers in the group to figure out these issues down the road. Maybe we can even get to a point where the electronics could be reverse engineered so electronic adapters could be made for other small lenses. Who's to say. Love these things though and appreciate the video you've done here. Was wondering when you might do one on this series :).

It was also the camera I started with when I first started shooting airshows because of its fast FPS and I used the 70-300mm lens. That thing was a monster and I could get close up shots of the planes while they were in the air. I enjoyed your video and it just shows that it doesn't matter which camera you have, the one closest to your hand can absolutely do the job in the right person's hands.

Love the V1...!!! It is my go-to carry camera. It is still a very capable camera. It has its quirks (weird hotshoe, compulsory reviewing of the picture). But, when you acustom to the kind of unique controls, it is beautiful. Autofocus speed is superfast. The shutter goes to insanely high speeds. It uses the same battery as my D7200. The 18.5mm f1.8 prime is amazing (although I’m more of a 35mm guy). Pairing it with a Fotodiox grip really improves handling. And it is soooooo light...! I am from Argentina, and here Nikon does not even bother to bring the "V", only some J models. I got one barely used in 2012, with the 10-30mm, the 30-110mm, the tiny SB N5 flash (that pivots side to side, and up and down, and uses the camera battery), and the adapter for DX lenses. On a trip to NYC, I bought the grip and the 18.5mm new at B&H. Later, here in my country, I got the 10mm, not even used, from a guy whose grandparent bought the lens thinking it would fit in his DX mount. At that time, I thought that the N1 system would last forever, but the price and the issues with the lenses were a weak link in the chain. The 10-30 broke two times, and the 30-110 is already giving me weird connection issues. I gifted a brand new N1J1 to my then-girlfriend. Her 10-30 also broke. It seems to be something with the flex cables moving inside the zooms. I hope the primes work for a little bit longer.

I bought the short lived waterproof Nikon 1 AW 1 in 2014 and took it snorkeling in Aruba and Maui with no issues. Then one day on a cold bright day I saw how much I loved quality of the photos and still use it as a beach and boat daytime camera for nice to severe weather. No more use as an underwater camera though.

Great video, had a blast watching it, loving the system. Bought my V1 back when the system sold so lousy that Nikon was slashing the prices and you coud get them here with a kit lens for around 200,- Euros. Was very intrigued by a system I could shoot my old 16mm & S16 lenes on with a c-mount or a PL adapter. That being said, if you care for original Nikkor lenses, Nikon for decades had a line of Cine-Nikkor lenses for 16mm film & 1" tape, they cover S16 and the 1" sensor of the Nikon 1 cameras and all come in c-mount, relatively fast, easy to adapt and fun to shoot. You can buy them any given day for not a lot of money on japanese auction sites, just be sure to buy the c-mount ones, not the d-mount that were made for 8mm film. So much for my unsolicited advice. Please keep up the good work, it sparks joy.

All the KZbinrs loved that camera but the J5's interchangeable lenses cannot be beat. Never got the love it deserved. BUT... that 32mm f1.2 is, sadly, a cursed lens. Bought two of them. Both failed. Well, I had the original V1 back when it first came out. Then sold it and moved on. Then later on got a new V2 and sold it later on. And NOW here I am in 2024 looking at maybe selling my Z fc and buying a used V3. Your photos are making me think hard about it (pushing me closer to buying the used V3). The naturally deeper depth of field with these smaller sensors is not a downside to me, If I use one of these, it's a known factor and I actually find it to be a benefit more often than not, like shooting in a museum where I need more depth of field in a low light situation. You know, full frame at f/1.8 is way too shallow sometimes. Anyway, thanks for the video on the Nikon 1 system.
@wildmano19659 ай бұрын
Oh yeah, that little camera is super. The 32mm f.1.2 is awesome, but like all super fast lenses is difficult to get precise focus on at 1.2-2.8. Good way to actually get good bokeh with the 1 inch sensor. When I used the 1 series a few years ago, that lens was still $600 on the used market. It is less now, I guess. Only problem with that system is the small sensor. (And the not great track record of reliability on some of those lenses). Otherwise, it rocks. I used to love the speed of the V3...crazy fast. For saving weight, it is great as well. I replaced everything with the Z system stuff, and the full frame there is WAY better. Sure, it is a bit heavier, but Z 5, 6, and 7 are pretty small cams without the battery grips. For what you are doing there in Yosemite, try the Z7 (Z8?) and some of the smaller primes. The body is small and some of the lenses weigh next to nothing. Even the cheap $300 dollar ones will surprise you.

I want a very light weight setup. I'll need at least 2 of them and the 6.7mm lens. I wish they made a 6mm lens, like a body cap 6mm f/5.6, or f/8.

I have an orange J1 that I love, I tried to get a V1 but when I got it from eBay the seller wasn’t truthful about the condition of the camera and it had been dropped, but eBay took care of me and I haven’t been able to get another one since

I have a 1 J4 and it was well ahead of its time. Sadly i could never get fantastic image quality out of it, and the lenses seem to be very prone to breaking

The images from these were fantastic. There really are no bad cameras. Yosemite might be a bit of a cheat code, but I think you'd produce fantastic images from a potato

It’s a total cheat code :P Thank you!

Had the V1 .. loved it .. but gave it to my niece when I got the J5. Have the 10-30 & 30-110 kit lenses. but I hardly use them. I mainly use the J5 with the Nikkor DX 18-300 vr with the adaptor. ! crazy nice zoomies ! Recently I have been considering the V3. Any comments comparing the J5 vs the V3 ? worth getting ?

I always thought in getting one of these for macro since I'm limited by diffraction anyway and not the sensor What was this filmed with?

Loved these cameras but the lenses are really quite expensive still - the cheap and cheerful ones are fine, but the 32mm and the 70-300mm still seem to command a high price. A modern one with computational photography would be amazing!
@18yearsoldnot9 ай бұрын
I don’t think that’s what a photographer’s photographer would like. I personally think computational photography is terrible. I have one of the latest iPhones and funded it by selling my gr3 because at first glance the images were similar, but then every single damn shot basically looked the same because that’s what computational photography is. The same algorithm over and over again with a million different user inputs shoved into maybe 10 or so different outputs
@theprettydamned9 ай бұрын
@@18yearsoldnot I love it. Hand held hi-res mode lets a small sensor generate the raw with higher resolution and less noise, and focus stacking is enormously useful for macro. Computational photography doesn't just have to mean what an iphone/pixel does, and a smaller (modern) sensor could do this more easily as they can be faster.

Yeah I took a long time assembling my kit to avoid the overinflated prices to the degree I could. Still pricey though.
@theprettydamned9 ай бұрын
@@OneMonthTwoCameras pricey, but so fun. I am saddened that the 1 inch ilc failed. Too early or too late? I worry for m43 also, fun seems to be less important in digital photography.

I adore my J5 w/ the 18.5mm. The durability/reliability, or lack thereof, of the lenses in this system led me to move away from it unfortunately (though I kept the J5). Literally been through 4 or 5 lightly used 30-110mm lenses, among others, lol.
@OneMonthTwoCameras9 ай бұрын
Agreed. It's such a bummer there were so many shortcuts taken in the production of these cameras. It's the one reason I hesitate to recommend them but for the right price, it's a hard system to beat.
@B9scrambler9 ай бұрын
@@OneMonthTwoCameras They can be fantastic at the right price, no doubt. Always surprised at the images I get, especially in monochrome. So much detail and clarity, and wonderful contrast. Despite leaving the system, I still want to get a silver J4 because it looks pretty rad :D Apparently the worst of the lineup performance-wise, but that's not important, lol.
