I like so much this short film I write this critique: Signs (2008) short film Film critique by Damian Hoffman Narrative approhe In this world full of people tired of there lives we need to search for signs of love. This is the underlying message that Patrick Hughes’s short film Signs (2008) teaches us. This 12-minute speechless film is about a lonely man who starts communicating with a cute girl in the next building using written signs and eventually they meet each other. Love does not always need to be expressed through words; sometimes, it might be expressed through a piece of paper. Using the narrative approach, the film successfully manages to weave a story that is entertaining and romantic mainly due to its relatable characters, its creative use of music and the open-end climax to advance the story. The character traits of the main character, Jason (Nick Russell), are very relatable and this captures the attention of the viewers throughout the film. The main character is a stereotype of an office worker who does feel out of place and lonely in his environment, but that is why we can identify with him; we all feel out places in the big cities. For example, at the start of the movie we are shown a birds-eye-view of Jason’s bedroom. He is lying on his Queen-sized bed all alone. This highlights how alone he is. Not only is he alone, but he feels out of place. In this scene, he is in a meeting and at a certain moment everyone starts to laugh a lot, but he doesn’t get the joke, and this makes him feel of places. This also makes him relatable to the viewer because everyone has been in this situation at least once before. In short, we can connect with this character because of the general feeling of being out of place and awkward. Hughes uses music effectively to advance the funny story about the budding romance of a couple getting to know each other through signs. At the start of the movie, the music is slow and highlights the main character's loneliness just like the main character. The beats of the music then begin to change to a faster tempo right at the plot point where the film transitions from act 1 to act 2. From here the tone of the music changes to a happier tone just like the feeling of characters of the story. We can see this between the minute mark 5:09 to minute mark 8:04. Between this time the characters are very happy and playful just like music. It is like music plays or goes with characters feeling let to audiences having the feeling like the characters of the movie. In short, Hughes used music to express the feeling of love that the characters have. What I like the most about the film is his open-end climax. In this scene, the two main characters are finally going to meet. However, when Jason is going to talk to the girl, the girl interrupts him saying ‘’hi’’ to him with paper where it says hi inside of the heart. They both smaller and the movie ends with open ending interpretation. The let to the viewer imagination interpret what it means those signs. It makes ask is these signs of love. What is going happing now that the two characters they finally meet? The movie lets with this beautiful open ending to understand that we only sign. In short, the short film sings (2008) has a romantic climax open ending. In conclusion, the short film sings (2008) is a romantic and funny story of love. This movie is a similar story to a short film Paperman because the plot is kind similar but is animation and they a lot different from characters and his plot is not really that similar. The film used narrative like relatable characters, its creative use of music and open-end climax to advance the story.

Once, a long time ago, I did this with a fantastic person on omegle. Something caused our speakers to loudly beep when we talked. So we muted, and talked via notes scrawled just like these two. I think we wrote for nearly 4 hours. I'll never forget her smile, or those shining eyes. And even though it didn't work out, everyone should know that this does happen. People meet in the strangest of circumstances. And when it happens to you, sieze the opportunity. You won't regret it. And if she ever sees this... Have a good day, Princess.

In this world full of people tired of there lives we need to search for signs of love.
