It was also necessary. If you ever heard and saw Louis in person, his sound would have dominated. Recall the first time , in the 'old tin shed' (Sydney Stadium, Rushcutters Bay) in Sydney when he walked onto the stage playing. I looked and asked myself - where does he hide the microphone? He did not need one. If you read about his 'Hot Five' and 'Hot Seven' recordings, he had to stay way behind the band since there was only one mike.

I count myself very fortunate to have been in the audience in the Sydney Stadium (an old boxing venue) at the age of 20, for Louis' performance.

There maybe the Christian McBride's, the Marcus Miller's, Gary Karr, & John clayton Jr.'s and a host of others of those floor waxers out there, but who waxed a floor as the great marvel shaw from the Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington era? Just clearly peep his hands, homeschool doesn't have to change the water much time get that miracle shine on the 'floor', an acrylic finish fa sho!!!

Arvell was a great bassist.Loved Louis, stayed with the All Stars until Satch became too I'll to go on..He had tears in his eyes when he told of the day Louis came to say he 'could not go any further.'.they had toured together 300 plus days per year since the 1950s..

If I were a stand-up bass player, I would now want to slit my wrists. This brilliant bass-playing musician, Arvel Shaw, should always be mentioned in the same conversation with Slam Stewart, Milt Hinton, Ray Brown, Paul Chambers, Ron Carter, Stanley Clarke, and Marshall Wood. Addendum: I've listened to this performance at least half a dozen times over the last half a dozen years, and I only just noticed the musical pun in the intro: "Moon Over Miami" is used as an intro for "How High the Moon." Clever.
