the only logical explination i can think of for fat dom's stupidity, is that phil specifically ordered him to make fun of them and get a reaction, to show dominance or maybe to begin the process of cutting ties with NJ, and eventually plan to take over. From the beginning, he avoided any type of rapport by declining their offer to stay, even though he was staying. the whole thing with the daughter was probably not true. even if phil ordered him to insult them, he shouldve brought someone else with him. its not like he doesnt know he is dealing with dangerous people

It wasn't just Fat Dom's insults that got him killed. It was the contempt he was showing for the Soprano family by saying them. Sil and Carlo knew Phil and his people killed Vito, and Dom knew that they knew. By spewing insults about Vito and Carlo, he was saying "We can kill one of your guys and crack jokes about it to your face and insult you along the way, and there's nothing you can do about it." In some ways, the disrespect Dom showed towards the Sopranos was similar to the disrespect Coco showed by making lewd remarks to Meadow. They each ended up paying a steep price for it.

There are really interesting social and anthropological studies out there about this phenomenon. Any society or sub-culture - like organised crime - that cannot take recourse to common laws and law enforcement are very sensitive to all matters of disrespect. They cannot be perceived as being weak or passive in the face of a slight or they risk falling victim to more serious attacks. The same happened with herdsman cultures in remote regions where their possession can easily be stolen from them. But when it comes to the Mafia families power Totem pole, The Soprano Family (really called the DiMeo Family) would rank really low. Compared to other families they’re not very strong. They only have a couple crews, which means they only have a couple captains, and maybe 2 dozen soldiers AT BEST (more than likely less). If the Soprano Crime Family were a real mafia family they’d be one of the weakest in the nation.
