Those Fel Pro 1628 gaskets are rather expensive, about 60.00 a pair. They are for Small Block Chevy V8 262, 265, 267, 283, 302, 305, 327, 350, 400 engines1957-85 but work with any SBC 4 bolt perimeter valve cover. Chevy 18 degree heads and Brodix 12 degree. It's a bad idea to use any type of sealer with them as they are Silicone and have ribs, and a sealer would only clog up the ribs. I bought some recently after spending oodles of money on other gaskets that all failed. I saw your video first, but still bought the lesser gaskets. Cork, Fel Pro flat rubber or even those at 6:11 did not work. I have Valve Covers like yours, only the 4 bolts go in through the top. Flattest mounting surface you could ever get. I am running a blower and get crankcase pressure under boost/high RPM even though I run negative crankcase pressure. Oil would leak all over. The 6218's seem to be working so far.

Not enough thread is what’s happening now with my 1985 Corvette. Will these studs work ?

Ya I got longer studs and put localite on them so you can set them at whatever height you need

@@TonyTheTechnician these studs are hard to find.. If I order them, they won’t arrive until next week. I’ll be out of town by then for 3 months! I’m concerned because we got the right side on just barely but the left side was a bitch. We screwed on the cap without the hose and panel. Now the check engine light is on. It’s throwing codes because air must be getting inside?

When I install my felpro gasket will I have to put silicone on the gasket or should I just slap them on and run it

For valve cover gaskets I wouldn't use any. Once I got new valve covers with these felpro gaskets they sealed perfectly

Sometimes with these cheap value covers i like to take a belt sander to the gasket surface to ensure its even. Just touching it to the sander shows the lows.
@TonyTheTechnician
@TonyTheTechnician Жыл бұрын
Ya these things had alot of lows. I place a flashlight inside and put the valve cover on a flat surface and found light shining through on almost every corner even with the gasket under it. I ended up buying new cast valve covers

Ive Had these on about 2 months now they have been great. But my main issue turned out to be bad valve covers actually.

I've tried Felpro 1628s over and over again with no luck. They always tear easily and squeeze out a side and leak. This is likely because I over torque them....because I follow instructions exactly....which is most likely too tight.
@vincevancleave9353
@vincevancleave9353 Ай бұрын
Regardless, I started using silicone gaskets. Even more expensive...and just tight to snug.
@TonyTheTechnician
@TonyTheTechnician Ай бұрын
Hmm I've never torn them or damaged them like that. They have built in spacers and a steel core to prevent that. I've always done a light snug and just tightened if necessary. Alot of the times is like 3 ft lbs to 6 ft lbs.

Actually, I revise a bit. My engine builder gave me my engine with these installed, and they leaked with his install too. Pulled them off, and the ribs were running off the edge of the head surface and leaking in several places. When I reinstalled, I used the 40 in lb torque spec...which seemed like an awful lot for valve cover gaskets. I used a fat wrench. Seemed fine for the first few heat cycles, then I got the same result. These are also cast covers.

Tony who made your valve covers bud and where did you get them from? i have a reason for asking you this. i may have a answer for you on why they leaked in the 1st place
@TonyTheTechnician
@TonyTheTechnician Жыл бұрын
Ya I can't remember who the maker was but they are garbage. The welds by the corner are causing an unflush surface and I could see small cracks in them. They are gone now. I picked up newer better valve covers

@TheseBygones weird. I've never had an issue with these gaskets. I prefer these gaskets over any other I've used. I would double check the valve covers and the head. Have you tried rotating the valve cover gasket? If it still leaks in the same spot it's not the gasket.
@TheseBygones

@@TonyTheTechnician people are trying to say my heads are warped when they are not. i rotated the gasket torqued down the stud nuts and everything and it still leaks im just screwed at this point and its my only vehicle
@TonyTheTechnician
@TonyTheTechnician 6 ай бұрын
@TheseBygones if you rotated the gasket and it still leaks in the same spot then it is either your head surface or your valve cover. Start with replacing the valve cover with a quality set. It's more common for valve covers to become warped. The car will be fine even if it's leaking just make sure to keep the oil at the proper level until you can get it sealed
