Thank you so much for your explanation of the number system and bossa nova. Having had a classical background, I struggled mightily with what to call modulations Roman numeral-wise. I like your ‘call it what it sounds like’ and ‘take what you need and leave the rest’ approach. It makes a lot of sense and it’s easier to remember.

I've been following you for a couple of years now Tony and would like to thankyou for your input and free sheets which are invaluable. Have watched the Kenny Baron version of this also which is great too. Please keep up the great work that you do 🎶🎹👍

I keep listening to your solo starting at about 12:35 and I just love the way you reference the melody all the time. To me that’s the best!! Chops are great, but the great soloists are the ones that keep letting you know what tune your listening to. So you are a great one!! And I get to learn from you. I’m trying to analyze the flurry of notes over the 2-5’s towards the end of the A section at 14:00. HELP PLEASE!!! 😅

@@brucejeric6701 hey Bruce, really what I was trying to do was play The Melody but not so much of it that I get hit with a copyright thing. But you're right it really helps to reference the melody. It inspires the solo as well as keeping the listeners grounded. I should do that more often

@@brucejeric6701 yeah I don't know what all those notes are. My advice is, don't try to copy what somebody else does fast, find the thing that you can do the best and then do that quickly

Hey Tony, loving the lessons recently. I've been listening to the jazz standard 'manhattan' a lot recently (specifically ella's version) and would love to learn the piano part - any chance you could give us a quick lesson on it? (that is, if it hasn't already been done the channel...) Thanks!

Excellent tutorial and beautiful soloing ! (the one thing that makes me jump a bit is that you keep playing a 'fa' in measure 2 & 6, beat 2. The "sol" is definitely more eloquent :)

@@fredelin2580 I think I usually play the right note when I'm just playing a single line but when I do that big chord thing I'm not playing the melody accurately.

I would have thought the D7 is V of V (five of five), since the whole 2-5-1 is "in" the borrowed key of G (G being the 1). I'm confused!

This would have been more accurate on an acoustic piano. You can't tell if the chords are correct when you are on an electric piano. Tony, you are not playing melody the way Jobim wrote it.

you don't have to play the melody exactly as it is written. also we're all very sad after you said you didn't like his performance, how can we do now!!!
