I think it depends also on how airtight/insulated your home is as well. We live in the Snowy mountains of NSW and our only heating/cooling is one reverse cycle split system. Doesn't run that often and we don't even have it on when we go to bed or while we are at work and the house is very comfortable 👍🇦🇺

I have seen a video explaining about the cons of ducted system.. attic can be too cold and too hot in summer and the extreme temperatures will effect the efficiency of the unit plus all the air leaks from around each and every ducts in the rooms as the cold or hot air gets sucked in from the attic results in system working harder.

hmmmmmmm well as an american who perfers duct systems... if u dont use a particular room much its gonna have vent blockers in that particular room (also helps with a fan to move air to overall cool the room in general cuz the vent blockers dont block 100%... but i love a cold home even in summer n a mild warmth in a home in a winter... being able to control that kinda thing is a gamechanger atleast for me... on 38c-42c+ days in summer the price a month is around 300ish on a ducted home... but that also varies on how insulated ur windows n what not actually is (which means the number of times it kicks on n back off to maintain the desired temp)... i want to add if u open up windows n then turn it on its gonna take longer to cool down a home also making it more expensive in return... also tinted windows is better for people with bigger windows. the sun also brings in heat thru the windows as a home... it all comes down too the direction of the sun in the home n how its insulated along with it to choose what u actually want! obviously if u have a west to east facing condo... ur being heat into the home thru the windows compared to the north n south facing... putting those additives into thought makes or breaks ones decision... so matter of preference... pay more now for payoff long term or look for the current pricing... all up to the individual n what they want

From the standpoint of appearance, IMO the wall mounted split units are too obtrusive. The ones that are recessed into the ceiling stand out much less.

NEVER get ducted airconditioning !!! When not if it breaks down you’ll have no aircon at all in your entire house. If a split unit dies you’ll still have several rooms to use in comfort. Ducted systems are horrendously expensive to repair as they use a lot of gas - 3-5 kgs at $160/ kg depending on the type of gas. The indoor pcb control board and outdoor control board are very expensive to replace assuming you can source the correct one that is. Our ducted has died 5 x in as many years and now the main control board for the outdoor cooling unit has died for no apparent reason, replacement board cost? $1380.00! and the new one can blow just as easily apparently because there is no obvious signs of failure. Meanwhile we’ve had several extended periods sweltering in heat and humidity before so called technicians could look at it. If we opted for split systems at least we’d have some respite to be able to sleep at night. Our $12000.00 ducted is completely unreliable and very costly in repairs. The brand? PANASONIC Chinese made garbage existing on their previous good reputation.

Another factor is how much value it adds to your home . For an extra $10,000 you may add between up to $50,000 to $100,000 value depending upon your location .It takes your home into another "class" level .It also may simply make your home more desirable and therefore saleable in tough times .
