People hate when I constantly repeat this but, colorism is gender biased. Men can be dark but women can’t. We associate lightness with femininity and purity and darkness with masculinity and power. This is why dark skin men are lauded for being dark skin and dark skin women are not. Dark skin men put themselves on a pedestal for the same reasons and bash black women for the same internalized reasons, which is why it’s so easy for them to bash dark skin black women, even though they’re dark too.

Her mom is such a bitch for that. I have struggled accepting myself the way that I am especially my skin complexion. And the only reason why my self-esteem has improved is because my mother has helped me through it. If my mom made comments like this woman did to her daughter growing up, I don't even know what would happen to me. I could not even imagine being this women, and you're own mother doesn't see the beauty in you. We already have enough insecurity issues as women.

JESUS!!! Her mother said everything but, "Alicia, I love you." (This is so sad). Sometimes, that's all children and adult children want to hear. Then she makes things worse by saying, "How can I not accept you, I had you Alicia- so now, you can't fault me for that." Wow. Basically, it's like the child asking the mother-"do you love me" and the mother answering, "Of course, I HAVE TO love you, you're my child." Rather than going on and on about trying to make herself look good and be in the clear, she should have just apologized, hugged her daughter, and told her that she loves her.

Her mom may have called her beautiful at times, but when she turns around and makes negative comments about Alicia's darker complexion- it ruins every 'positive' thing that the mom said to her earlier. I know the mom said these things b/c she responds: "As far as some of this stuff she's saying: I didn't know it affected her like that." Question to the mom: How did you feel that shunning your daughter orally and putting down on her son would make her feel??? Happy and exciting? Loved?? I personally think this family needs to attend family counseling. I feel that this mom's parents told her that she was pretty and treated her well b/c she was lighter skinned and now that she has children of her own- she has made a noticeable difference between Alicia and her lighter-skinned sister. This is so sad mom. I so wish that she would STOP with the "It's not my fault" and just put down that pride and love on your daughter b/c she's reaching out to you the best way she knows how. Please love your child- that may be the very child that comes through for you one day in your time of trouble and the other one think so highly of may abandon you.

Dude, don't stay out of the Sun - dark people need the Sun more than white people (for vitamin D production in your skin). And also, don't use any artificial stuff on your skin, don't be stupid. You don't know what it'll do to your skin in the long run, it could even give you skin-cancer, not to scare you but don't do it, it's not worth it.

As an adult I understood. what I have also learned and seen, is beautiful very dark skinned people that never age in their appearance. My advice to women, enjoy you dark skin and know that as you get older you will look 25 year younger as the light-skinned blacks look their age. Trust me on this.

I can totally relate. I'm a teenage girl with an twin sister. When my skin tone first went from bronze to deep the first year was hard. My mom had taken many opportunities to comment on my skintone saying "eww, your skin tone is so dark", "why can't you be light like ur sister".etc It used to make me feel so sad until finally I embraced it.
