I had problems with my XJ alternator in silty water and it turned out it made the brushes stick. I have never had a starter problem and we do mud fairly often. Would you say that it was the same problem of the brushes sticking in your starter issue.

Well, we'd send the big guy to check the thickness of the ice, but light guy just for water depth, cuz it's easier to pull him out if it gets too deep. ;)

Can pull start an automatic. 25 mph or more drop in D. Done that many times.

That only works on old automatically with a pump driven by output shaft. That ended forty years ago.

I sank my 87 chevy in water 2 inches over the hood on driver side and water was touching the seat and thank God it stayed running for about 1hour and 45 minutes until I got pulled out this new years eve will be 2 years sence that happened

been there done that. if you going to play in the mud you going to make rookie mistakes once in a while. once we all went mudding 8 or 9 of us. almost all of us got stuck in a new hole that just showed up out of nowhere and not one of us had a rope strap or even a chain to pull us out and the 2 that didn't get stuck couldn't get back up the hill to go get one. so we had to call around until we could get someone to bring us 4 ropes. and since it was in a old field our winches was more less useless. so yea we was all stupid rookies that day.

Convert it to manual transmission, if the battery or starter fails you can still bump start it or tow start with another vehicle.

I recall he's explained the decision to go with an automatic before. Shifting a manual is too much of a distraction while towing offroad.

i remember beating a lot of old Chevy starters with hammers to get them started and whats that other trick where you just cross the two bolts to short it out or something? i vaguely remember using a 9/16ths combination wrench to get started a few times...ive been driving Toyotas for over 15 years so ive completely forgotten how to work on cars. these are all just distant memories now that seem very surreal. back when this truck was new and before it seemed like if you went a week without a flat tire or some kind of car trouble we'd be jumping up and down for joy... car problems were nearly daily if not a routine to get them started, like my old 1968 chrysler needed a quart of gasoline dumped into the carb to get it started
