Too Far Gone? Plumbers, Would you have done this?

Another week another day i'm asking plumbers if it was worth it?! Talking about boiler repairs yet again and this time its the Worcester greenstar junior under the spotlight with a failed heat exchanger. We first went out to this for a full strip and clean when we noticed the seal on heat exchanger had gone. We gave the customer 2 choices, repair or replace. When we gave them the price to repair it included a new main heat exchanger and installing a new filter with a full system clean, we was more expensive than a Worcester fixed price repair HOWEVER with the filter and full system clean the boiler has a better chance of lasting now but do you agree? Would you of saved or replace? Be interested to know your thoughts

All done to cost etc vs new boiler I’d say everyone’s different on prices but parts are getting more and more expensive

I love a breakdown and repair. Hate servicing. I'd rather fix than replace. Of course it's up to the custard. But nothing better than tackling a fault. GreenStars are a piece of piss to work on once you've done a few. Great boiler. PRV on the old one's a pain. But the real arse of a Worcester were the old CDi's. Diverter valve. That fat red expansion behind pipework. Leaking iso's. Passing P2P. The High-Flow, Heatslaves gave me nightmares. Too many "engineers" would rather grass a boiler than spend time fixing. They replace with a 4000 and have no idea how to set one up!

Condense trap always leaks over the board for me 😂, it’s not going anywhere but it looked like you forgot to push the black locking lever in place that secures the return pipe under the main heat exchanger, pushing it all the way right secures it👌

Looking back yeah I don’t think it’s fully over but it only has to be slightly over and will lock in, be alright like you said 👍

Bit like triggers broom, if it's your boiler the labour costs nowt but even then the heat exchanger you're looking north of £200. If it was me, I would have swaped it out for maine 25he combi, fantastic boiler and no agro for least 10 years and everything is a easy swap out, baxi parts are reasonable as loads fit different boilers.

Hi there I just wanted to let you know that when I take the condensate trap in or out I always take it out from below as every time I take it out across the orb it always leaks onto the board, loving the videos

Yeah if the customer would rather go for the repair i would do. Imhad a similar junior. I had a new exchanger. I then had to replace the sump, the right and left hydro blocks and then a year later fitted a new logic max so even after they were £500 in they still replaced afternall🤷🏼‍♂️

Hope you did a fan pressure test Luke, might have had cowboys adjusting the gas valve over the years instead of cleaning the heat ex?

The hex was split mate that's why it was replaced

I suppose it depends on the overall condition of the boiler. If it looks likely other parts will fail in the near future it'd make more sense to replace the boiler. Whats the purpose of the black cap underneath the heat exchanger if you dont mind me asking.

As an S&R engineer that’s a common replacement for us. Wish we could say not economical to repair at times but don’t have the luxury. Think I’ve fitted more kebabs than I’ve had hot dinners. Think I’ve seen you worked S&R before? What area? You look familiar

If they had to pay for that hex rather than getting it for free with warranty, then i would of put a 4000 in there, takes an hour to do literally with new jig and then get it flushed out😂😂😂😂

Out of warranty the hex was so had to be paid for, would of been a good swap that

Thats an old boiler. I'd of replaced it. Its a bit like vans. When things start to go wrong due to age you will be forever throwing parts at it. Then your reluctant to buy a new one as you've spent so much on the old one.

Not that many parts on this boiler though - and it’s efficient. Good for another ten years that. Only thing I would have done cos it’s me is clean up all the condensate marks on the plate at the top,of the boiler and maybe the bottom case too
