I read a great many comments about the "cheap plastic Behringer boxes" yet I have never read of anyone actually breaking one. I have used two Behringers for 20 years or more; tuner and bass chorus. Both used 3 to 6 shows every week for a couple of decades. No breakage, ever.

This. For sure it's not a tough as steel... but it's plenty tough for most reasonable use cases.

I broke one where it hinges for the switch many years ago. It still worked until it was stolen with the rest of my board a few months later. That’s the only one I’ve seen break though.

This pedal was definitely the best investment I ever made. Bought it for 17€ and really improved the tone of my basses. Got it for the past four years, used it in studio, on stage, everywhere and truly unbreakable. Not a SansAmp quality, but for the Price.... Incredible ! Thanks for the video !

I love mine. Paid £17 for it about 4/5 years ago and it’s never let me down. From the studio, to big stages. I love it when people compliment my tone, and they’re amazed at how little it cost. I completely get though that going from a SansAmp to one of these is a massive jump with let down points. But, like you say, it’s exceptional value for money for the cheap price!

@@JonnyDibble like you say, it’s fine for when it’s switched on constantly, but I can imagine that constantly being stamped on during a show would completely destroy the pedal completely 🤣 One day, I’ll invest in a SansAmp. But for the moment, this thing gives me the tone (and playing punk I’ve always had a specific tone in mind that I’d want) that I’ve always imagined 😁

I've had a BDI21 for almost a decade. Not a single issue with it (as has been the case with all the Behringer stuff I have bought over the past 15 years). I had a Sansamp for about 2-3 months and got rid of it. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't better than the BDI21 for 5x the cost.

I always heard about the constructive weakness of the behringer's pedals, but 'till now I've never see a smashed behringer's pedal. If anyone would break his behringer pedal i would be happy to buy the broken one and house it in an aluminium case. Honestly, the first time I saw my BDi21 I thought the same thing: "as soon as it would break, i will house it in an other case". But it is still in good conditions... And I'm 75kg often wearing skate's shoes, but sometimes wears boots.

I have been using a SansAmp ever since the days when making such a purchase meant not eating for a few days. I must state now; I have never "out-grown" it. I am never without it. Not long ago, I demo 'ed a BDI21. Had this Behringer been available to me during those times, I would have eaten much better that week and I doubt anyone would have noticed any difference in the band.

I wasn’t sure if I wanted to plop down the gheetus for a Sansamp. I thought this pedal is inexpensive enough to test out, so I bought one. Really enjoyed the sound of it. Nice tones I was looking for, I just wish it had a midrange control. I liked it well enough to purchase a Sansamp v2. A good tip is to add a touch of white paint or glow-in-the-dark paint to the little divots in the knobs so you can see where they are set easier. I’d definitely recommend one. It’s a good pedal.

I'd like to see inside it. I've repaired pedals for people and have retrofitted quality pots and stomp switches from more expensive equipment to "favourite" cheaper examples. Perhaps the guts of the BDI21can be used as the basis for a really cool DIY project. Fitting it into a more sturdy customised housing with more robust potentiometers and foot switch. It's not a hard thing to do. Anyone skilled with a soldering iron and possessing a little bit of electronics knowhow can do it.

Haha this was the first pedal I bought for bass (figured at that price point (I think it was 22€ brand new), can't really go wrong with it) and one of the first things I did with it was painting the little notches on each dial white. I have the version 1 of the original Sansamp that has been with me and has played thousands of shows with me since 1998. I picked one of these Behringers up just to see if it was a dead on copy. Behringer make their money as follows: 1. They make clones. (This is a clone of the Tech 21 SansAmp Bass Driver DI.) Most circuits can't be patented so as they copy they don't have to spend money on R&D. 2. Behringer has a giant factory in China which means that they get parts easily (and without transport costs). They also have a highly skilled workforce and low labour costs. 3. Behringer is a giant company, but it is part of a larger conglomerate that means it has extensive buying power as well.

The Joyo Dr J Sparrow is a better Sansamp, Caline Wine Cellar too, in that order. About $55 and $35 respectively, quieter, ballsier and far sturdier.

I'll check out the Joyo! Is it just a better clone or better in general?

Good review. You need to drop your pickups on the Bass side of your bass. The E is thunderous compared to the other strings....or that appears to be the case to my ears.

Awesome demo. I'm impressed by Behringer stuff lately. I mean for the price you pay for it with the quality you get is pretty good.

Let's say... I don't have an amp head only the 2x12" bass cabinet... Does it work just plugin the preamp bass to the cabinet? And how loud can be?
@JonnyDibble
@JonnyDibble 6 ай бұрын
Hi! Afraid not. Amps have two sections, a preamp and a power amp. The power amp is what powers the cab and preamp pedals are essentially the EQ controls of an amp, without the power amp section to power a cab. You can by separate power amps, check out the Ashdown Ant or Seymour Duncan power stage. Hope this helps!

Which would be a better buy for getting a good live tone between this pedal or the Valeton Dapper Bass?

Look into the modded versions - there is a mod that you can do them (but I've destroyed three with sloppy soldering.. lol)

Hi Johnny! Thank you for all the good content you make. I have one question. I never had a preamp and never used it. I only use passive basses and I recently bought a POD GO. My signal chain is: bass>compressor pedal>POD GO + Tc Electronic Sub n Up into the fx loop. Since the pod go is limited to only 4 blocks, with the fx loop I am able to use 5 fx instead of 4. The sansamp in the pod go I like it for having a clean slighty dirt tone (like a Justin Chancellor one), but for the really dirt I prefer the Obsidian one. I don't like the obsidian before the sub n up and since the pod go i limited compared to the HX stomp I ask you. Would it make sense buy a sansmap and use it after my compressor pedal using the obsidian as only distortion or it would be better buy a Darkglass and put it after my sub n up into the Fxloop using the sansamp in the Podgo? I don't use D.I., I use the pod go as Audio Interface as well. Hope I have been clear. Thank you so much.

Is the hi-freq hiss a feature of the pedal or is it because of daisy-chaining?
