The rail now needs a hundred billion supposedly to finish. The original money for the project was spent mainly on consultants and lawsuits instead of construction. The political decision to start the rail in the rural Central Valley to create construction jobs in a depressed area prevented the rail from going straight from LA to San Francisco. Funding for the rail in the future is uncertain and dependent on private funding. In other words, the whole project is a total mess created by governmental incompetence and politics,
