Hi Guys, the term "Americans" was first used during WWII referring to the USA troops arriving to Europe. It was after that the term was adopted excluding Canada and Mexico that actually belong to the North of America=Continent, from the tip of Tierra del Fuego in South America to Alaska in North America.

If the expat respects Mexico, the people and culture -- welcome. If you project a sense of superiority -- "Well in (fill in the blank) it's (fill in the superiority meme)" - NO. Why bother to come? If you really want to be happy here, take a lesson from the Kennons: learn the language, imerse yourself in the culture and absorb Mexico.
@darkwraithcovenantindustries4 жыл бұрын
This right here. If you’re coming here to act like you own the place and are rude and disrespectful, you should go elsewhere. We haven’t really experienced that though, I feel like even the cheesy tourist bars are friendly and not full of people with a bad attitude who want to drink too much, disrespect locals, and fight.
@darkwraithcovenantindustries4 жыл бұрын
Most of the people here are extremely friendly compared to the US. Yes there are people trying to sell you thinks, but a simple no gracias and they leave you alone. Now compare that to aggressive panhandlers in the US. Much more laid back culture here than in major US cities. Mexicans are very polite and respectful its part of the culture.

I love Puerto Vallarta, it is a beautiful city. I love visiting the city and the shrimp on a stick are one of my favorite things to eat. That being said, I do feel there are too many Usonians (that is my new term for US citizens) in PV. There are just a lot of little things, you mentioned one with the English in restaurants, that make PV not fully Mexican and that kind of weird me out. Which for me is weird because I am a dual citizen by birth. I am the literal embodiment of Mexico and the United States and I want things to be Mexican when I am in Mexico and things to be Usonian when I am in the United States. In the end I guess we are just becoming more global, which is not totally bad as long as we don’t totally forget where we came from.

When I move to Mexico, I will be choosing a place that is NOT known for having a lot of expats. Personally, I'm moving there to experience real Mexico (not that others aren't). This is probably come out so wrong. I want to go and speak Spanish. I don't want the 'luxury' of having stuff in English or people from my country to depend on. I hope that makes sense and doesn't come off as rude. I just feel that if there is a large number of foreigners living in one area, the culture starts to change a bit.

It's often very funny and the people are so nice . My favorite restaurant in your town was la familia and often no one spoke English there. Anyone going to the romanic zone consider taking one of the food truck tours. They show you how to order and what your getting. It helped me adjust the dialect of my little Spanish and make me less afraid to order.

Mexico is a beautiful and friendly country with a welcoming and hospitable population. There has always been an exchange of customs and language between our neighboring countries, and now there seems to be an increase in immigration from US to Mexico either for economic or political reasons. This I believe is a good thing because preconceptions and stereotypes will change and understanding between our two countries will be improved. Knowing each other is always a good thing and establishing mutual relationships between our neighboring countries will solidify our interdependence economically and geographically. We each have a lot to offer to one another and hopefully the US will start to appreciate its neighbors and forge stronger and more respectful alliances with those countries in our hemisphere and help this half of the world to take it’s place in the world stage.

Very interesting topic that is always on my mind. I think the question should be , "Is there U.S. (Canada too) domination of the culture here in Mexico?" I'm surprised at how many Gringos live here and don't try to speak Spanish and consequently have to live huddled together in the Expat community. But there are more people who speak at least a little bit and try to improve. In general Mexican are so appreciative and complimentary of people who make an effort. It's such a pleasure to be able to interact with Mexican friends, neighbors, and strangers you meet randomly. It really makes living here so enjoyable.

Fully agree with you! Although those from the US, Canada, and Mexico share the American continent, each group has its unique cultures and language. It's astonishing that the Mexican people have maintained their language and culture so well, as the behemoth US has hovered over them for almost 200 years. Hilary is correct in saying that many US gringos have expectations (that Mexicans should speak English) and often exhibit hubris while in Mexico: that they are somehow better, more knowledgeable, and more informed than others, yet many will not bother to learn nor speak Spanish for "fear of making a mistake." This way of thinking reflects both a narcissistic and imperialistic view of the world. Surprisingly, Mexicans are not bothered by this nor do they care, as they are fully confident that their language and culture will endure and never be compromised!!. What wonderful, magnanimous, and thoughtful people are the Mexicans! We are fortunate to have them as our neighbors!

As an American who has been actively looking for a new home outside the country over the past couple years, one of the disqualifying factors for me has been the number of American expat retirees. At the risk of over-generalizing, these people in places like Puerto Villarta and Ajijic (which is primarily populated by Americans and Canadians these days!) tend to have failed to plan for retirement and have left the United States after having bought into the "one can live like a king or queen on $600 a month in..." myth. Not a particularly amusing bunch.

Remember that the "cheap Airbnb" you're renting in Mexico is wildly expensive for local people, which is why landlords choose to rent to tourists by-the-night -- or week or month -- instead of local people for year(s). Make ethical accommodation choices when visiting Mexico, Europe, or anywhere else.

We get about 5 to 6 Thousand full and part time Canadians and Americans here in Bucerias and La Cruz (Riveria Nayarit)with the majority during the Winter months and some of course full time. 5 to 6 Thousand is quite a bit of people out of a area population of 35 Thousand.

The only thing I hate is the overdevelopment of these small towns. They assume it's good for the local economy, but it's not. It drives real estate prices up so high that locals can't afford housing in their home towns and real estate agents will keep selling as long as they get their commissions. All these luxury resorts provide jobs for locals, but the profits go to the corporations, so they might as well stay as small fishing villages... And don't get me started on the weird expats looking for culture and spirituality who want everything organic and they're vegan and they do yoga and Pilates... stay in overpriced Malibu with that sh¡t!

I’m an American of Mexican decent (my family settled in Taos, New Mexico in the late 1500s), and I am often considered Mexican by the expat community (I speak Spanish as well), so just because someone doesn’t look like a gringo, doesn’t mean that they are from Mexico. I am also annoyed at expats who have no desire to learn the language or the culture.

There are "enclaves" of Mexicans, Americans, British, Japanese, Koreans, Chinese and several others, all over the world. I see no problem in Vallarta in this case. I do agree with many comments that it can tend to subservicing nationals, and that is really something to think about. What is China Town, in any city that applies, without Chinese heritage people living there and working? Outside of the US, in my experience, its different. Each country and city or town are very different.

Pues si, verdad. Pero la mayoría no son así y ya es un fastidio que vengan tantos a pasar más que sólo unas vacaciones.

Do not use the term “Expat”. To me you are IMMIGRANTS from US, Canada, Etc.

Canadians are American because we are ALL part of North America, but that is where many similarities end. Canadians are closer to being like Mexicans than US persons. We are both overshadowed by the US in many aspects. Many US citizens are wonderful and welcoming, but there are the ones (like any nationality) that leave a bad impression. We (Canadians) have those too, although ours seem to be more concentrated form Quebec. This is simply a personal perspective from spending time in Mexico north of PV, (RDG, La Penita, San Pancho) and may be skewed from my interactions with the ones I have encountered.

I just love folks that come to another country and then complain there are too many tourists. Puerto Vallarta has been a tourist trap for years. And AMLO says everybody is welcome to Mexico.
