It would probably have been a good idea to mention the backup plans for each character. This is critical for bad luck mitigation when rolling "bones" and is integral to the game. Not to mention the game is called "Too Many Bones". In any case, thanks for the review and I really appreciate you getting this done. Those of us waiting for the game are always looking for more content to peruse.

Several times you guys mentioned that this game needs a dedicated group to play... which is a great testiment as to why 'Too Many Bones' should be a superb game for solitaire players to add to their collection! The only shame would be in keeping this beautifully produced game to one's self!

i want to pull the trigger on the retail version but the completionist in me would push the cost over 250 dollars after addons and shipping. The sick thing is a I have gloomhaven and mechs vs minions unopened and unplayed on my table in front of me and I'm trying to talk myself into too many bones...lol...the curse of too many great games.

I have a similar dilemma. I have Mech vs Minions, which I have played several times, and really enjoy it. I want Gloomhaven but, fortunately for me, it is pretty much sold out until EOY unless I want to pay about $300 or so. I am hoping that TMB gets delivered soon so that I can wait for Santa to bring me Gloomhaven while only taking about $125 that I will leave for him in my stocking.

After you play Gloomhaven, the urge to buy this one will soon be gone.
@gregkleinfall19017 жыл бұрын
I doubt that. While I am looking forward to both games, they are very different. TMB is a game where you are constantly leveling your Gearloc in about a 1 to 4 hour adventure. This gives you a condensed experience of what I think (leveling your character) makes RPG type games so much fun. Gloomhaven is more of an epic campaign taking months, if not years, to complete. Slowly but surely leveling and retiring characters, and unlocking new ones to adventure with. It is much more of a legacy feel and tells a great story. Also, the mechanics of each game are totally different. TMB uses dice and Gloomhaven primarily uses cards. I am intrigued by both and look forward to playing each. So having one does not satiate the desire for the other, at least for me. Per my previous note, having TMB simply allows me to enjoy the months ahead while waiting on Gloomhaven.

I'm with you - the tactile nature of this fills me with lust. I took the leap of faith last week and ordered the whole lot, now they've just announced an upcoming kickstarter expansion for later this year. Saving already!

I agree that learning what the different skill dice do for each character can be daunting, but go to Chip Theory Games youtube channel and they have video explanations for each Gearloc and their skill dice. They are well done and a good way to learn the different skill trees. They are also VERY quick to respond to questions.

I do feel a little sorry for CTG. With Too Many Bones, they've really knocked it out of the park. How on earth are they going to top it? :) Still can't wait to get this game both in my hands and to the table.

Was looking at Gloomhaven. The legacy mechanic for an RPG campaign is something us geeks wanted FOREVER. But then I see the combat and how its fiddly and has weird rules for no good reason. This games seems to be perfect. So many critics and reviewers love this games. Though as you mentioned it could use a bit more of a campaign-ish feel to it.

We are working on a campaign-like expansion for the game. TMB will never be Gloomhaven or Pandemic: Legacy. It was always designed as an RPG you could play and put away. But, we're working on a way to string together an attempt to take down all 7 Tyrants consecutively in a meaningful way - that's all we can say for now!

Great review. I am so excited for this game I watch every moment I can find someone talking about it on KZbin lol

Great review and good job on focusing on some of the more important rules. This makes the wait so much harder.

I am so excited to just fiddle with the game and learn a character. I ordered every single TMB item available in their store. Sadly I still haven't received the core game yet. The 3 addon toins will arrive in a couple days, so at least I can pick one to study for the next month of waiting.

I actually was sold on the fact that you don't keep your progress. I have too many campaign games that I need to have like a specific group for. This you get variety in builds, you try different things, you do a lot, and then you reset with different stuff. Replayability is something I want more people to invest in.

The price was a bit tough to swallow. The components look amazing between the player mats, chips, dice, and trays. Looking forward to seeing more of the gameplay to see if my group would enjoy it.

It was interesting that you both thought the game was a little heavy and might require a "commitment" to fully enjoy it. I hadn't really considered it as that heavy of a game. On the other hand, I've already watched several hours of playthroughs and explanations! ;) Do you think that a newbie could have casual fun with it by just following the recommended upgrade path on the character sheets?

I taught the game in 2 hour slots at Gencon to people had no exposure to it and by the end of the two most people were grocking it and pretty self sufficient.

I really do like this game. It hits a lot of sweet spots for me.
@somedude152317 жыл бұрын
odd question but how do you think this would play solo? because the game interests me but I doubt my group would be down to play something so heavy.
@Kortemaki7 жыл бұрын
It's a co-op game for 1-4 gearlocs. I think it would be quite fiddly to manage a party with more than 2 gearlocs as a solo player, but it's definitely playable!
@steftymo7 жыл бұрын
There are 12 solo encounters included. These are used for playing as 1 gearloc. CTG have also said that they are looking at making more solo encounters in the future.
@markucla7 жыл бұрын
Actually, there aren't 12 solo encounters, but 12 cards you use in the solo encounter I believe
@bgm-19616 жыл бұрын
No, there are 12 solo encounters. You're conflating the term, "Encounter". Remember that an Encounter is a day spent during the game. All games are "X" days long, depending on the Tyrant selected for the game. So the 12 solo encounters let you play as a single Gearlock against any Tyrant an infinite number of times.

Ya know Jeremy, the production value looks just Amazing(!) but.. I just don't know. I've been looking for an RPG "ish" game, with an asymmetrical role. I would love to grab this game when it comes out, but I'm afraid that it's learning curve alone will be pretty heavy for so many groups. Crazy as I type this, I think I could get Vast out faster and played more. I don't know, I would love to check it out sometime and play it for sure! I think then I could see its own unique and special individuality and quality.

I've backed it .. but does it trump Roll Player ? (which is hard to get).
@fubarbox7 жыл бұрын
I think they are completely different games, with some similarities in looks and dice. Just watching a play-through video of both will show how vastly different both games are. Rick Royal has a 6 part play-through, maybe it is on BGG. As for Roll player, I am sure there are videos on BGG as well if you have not played. Edit: Also Roll Player is back in stock as of today.

I think I'll get Roll Player when it gets a reprint, I missed the very limited European release at retail a few months ago.

Dear MVM, I just received this game. :) However I am surprised at how hard it is for me to understand the rules (surprised because I play a lot of "complicated" games from publishers like FFG, FFP, etc...). Any ideas? I tried to watch the videos from ChipTheoryGames but I do not understand the person who speaks (I am not english native). :)

"I hope I never play this again. This game has a lot of problems, which made this an incredibly tedious experience. Of which: 1) Entirely too long for what it is. I’ve watched a game be 6 hours and played another that was 5 hours long (and its not over yet!). Pssst, that 5 hours involved a whopping 3 combats and a whole lot of dumb filler content (see below). 2) Lots of encounters that are entirely too cute. Basically inventing new ways to fight that don’t follow combat rules, with ill-defined rules that don’t have edge cases well defined. 3) Lots of rules ambiguity and a poorly written manual. Checking online for an answer happened every 20 minutes, and we usually didn’t find a good answer. The fact that every hero is different complicates this by making it so its hard for players to share notes. 4) Lots of situations where you literally can’t do anything in it. It’s possible for you to be boxed away from enemies and be unable to get past them, or to have all of your actions destroyed by the enemies. The fact that most abilities are one-use per combat when you have a huge stream of never ending abilities also means that 90% of our combats 5) This is probably unsurprising due to the fact that its a dice-based game, but its incredibly random. Situations that seem well in hand can be destroyed by a bad die roll. Had one player who sat out two hour-long combats due to being one-shot before he took a turn." The truth hurts?
