I can't believe I am saying this but we had too much rain this year. The summer garden is going to be healthier than ever but the winter garden paid the price. From fungal disease to straight up drowning plants lets go over how I am approaching it.

I always have problems with tomatoes in 9a southeast Texas. My tomatoes get some sort of disease every year. I’ve started growing them exclusively in grow bags. At least now, if they get diseased, I can get rid of the soil so my beds aren’t diseased. I’ve been growing beans in the old tomato beds to help amend the soil. So far, so good. Gardening is challenging but definitely worth it! I have 21 tomato varieties doing well…fingers crossed!

I wouldnt rush to get rid of those over wintered peppers! If you let a few grow and get at least one or two plants that produce peppers, and let them overripe to develop good seeds the seeds from those will be able to better survive a harsher wetter winter!

I was trying to decide if I need to do anything w my compacted soil without “digging”. Now I know after watching this why I shouldn’t “dig” but that I still need to aerate it. Thanks! Best teacher! 😊

If you haven't already, get that garlic out in the hopes spores won't spread to your onions and other garlic...or leave teliospores in your soil. After years of basically having plants drown in the spring up here in the PNW, I finally broke down and started using row cover. It's made a massive difference. It might be a long time before you have another winter like this one but, in the future, construction a low tunnel over things like your peppers might make the difference.

I'm in Tucson, AZ and we had 6 days between a 32 degree low and 99 degree high. Thankfully, it has cooled back down into the 80s but I know it won't last most of my gardening has been inside but I do have some tomatoes that I'll need to harden off to the heat and also cover with an insect netting bag to keep the locusts, grasshoppers, and cabbage loopers off from killing the plants. The 100°+ heat will be enough stress for them. Most of my outdoor garden consists of snake plants, adenium, spider plants, purple heart, tradescantia zebrina, and mother of thousands. I have herbs inside under grow lights except for the rosemary which can take the heat and even survives the dreaded spider mites that are the most pervasive pest in the hot and arid low desert.

My garlic met the same fate. I should have gotten about 30 heads and the rain killed them; probably from fungal disease. They just rotted in their fabric pots because they could never fully dry out in-between rains. Now it's been raining for about a week straight every damn day! I am so bummed because I have lost alot of other seedlings and established plants have stopped setting fruit because they can't pollinate like this. I'm considering putting a tarp over some of the beds to see if that reduces the amount of water.

I live on the east coast of Australia and a number of my beds have been infested with root knot nematodes this last summer. In one bed I dug through French marigolds (tagetes patula). It appears that this has worked. I applied compost to the bed when I dug through the marigolds. From this compost a tomato seed sprouted which I left to grow on. It's now a very healthy tomato with a thick stem and no sign of any disease. We are heading into the cooler months here and I probably won't get much fruit from this tomato but it's a good indicator plant. In few months I will pull up this tomato and check the root system for nematodes. I have planted out French marigold, and mustards (particular brassica juncea) in other beds to fumigate against root knot nematodes. Hopefully by the time spring comes around these beds will be free of root knot nematodes. I'm growing Ethiopian mustard in a nematode infested bed and it's doing well. I do however intend to fumigate the beds regularly in future to keep on top of this problem.

Sorry to hear you had rain problems, but in a weird way it’s consoling to novices that even experienced gardeners have trouble with weather. The fava bean solution is ingenious, but I can’t fault you for not expecting massive amounts of rain in San Diego, after years of drought.

I think he's only been gardening for a few years. He's obviously a really good gardener, but I don't know that experienced is the right word. Kevin and Jacques are often learning right along with their KZbin viewers which is really what makes their channels so watchable. There are other gardeners who stick to their same methods for 40 years and don't run into the problems that us newer gardeners experience as we try new stuff year after year

I lost lots of oy garden last year, due to mostly to excessive rain. What would you suggest inter-planting to help “soak up” some of the water like you mentioned in the first part of this video? 11:46 Honestly I would have gone a different route for pest control, I would have purchased a bag of live ladybugs. They would have been a natural deterrent and predator to the aphids and would have gotten rid of them for you being a beneficial insect to have in your garden. 🐞🐞🐞🐞 Remove the aphid infested leaves yes, but also bringing ladybugs and other positive hunting insects into the garden to do the work for you so you don't necessarily have to spray. ✌️

hi jacques 🤗 i really enjoy your channel. im also in socal/zone 10 and the rain nearly drowned/swamped my raised bed garden. i think it brought a new pest to my garden. i suffered (and am still dealing) with APHIDS for the first time ever. they started in my broccoli, then cabbage, then sweet potato leaves and have all but destroyed my kale. i really don't want to use any harsh chemicals, but i refuse to sow one seed until i get this pest infestation under control. i tried the jet blast of water. ive heard about diatomaceous earth and BT(?). recently, someone recommended soaking crab & lobster meal, spraying the leaves with the strained liquid and mixing the shells into the soil. PLEASE HELP ME (AND MY GARDEN). thanks

Diatomaceous can help but it is rendered useless once it has been wet. Get some neem oil. Neem oil is a natural pesticide. Also look into what plants you can plant to repel the aphids. Also you might be able to look into buying some predatory insects that will kill the aphids. Hope this helps 💚

Did you mean nematodes? Rootknot nematodes make small ball like knots on the roots, but before that you will notice your plants failing to thrive, turning yellow, sometimes aborting fruit. Once you look your plant over making sure there are no other pests at fault, and you know your watering, and fertilizing has been good, it becomes a process of pulling one of the plants up and checking the roots. It almost looks like beads inside the roots which make it bumpy looking.
