Drake, Can't even begin to tell you how much I enjoyed your Newport series. I have lived in Newport several times during my Navy career. It seems that as a Surface Warfare Officer (SWO), I'm always being brought back to Newport the SWO mecca. Anyway, I was married there on the Navy base and my first daughter was born there at the Newport General Hospital. So the sights and sounds were a wonderful reminder. It's been some time since my wife and family have been back so thanks for the walk down memory lane.

We've sailed over 10,000 nautical miles since Newport and have some wonderful and incredible stories coming up! :)

Drake-n-Mo; Great vid as usual. Your chartplotter shows this happened 2 years ago last May. My nerdy ears perked up at 27:38 when you were lamenting over your hydraulic ram. You already know this is a common problem for WS42s and several other boats when running and/or broad reaching under full mainsail. The simple solution is a steerable trim tab incorporated into the rudder with a trim servo also coupled to the autopilot. It's very similar to the windvane principle except that it's built directly into the rudder. Airplanes 'been using 'em for decades and can barely fly without them. I'm looking for a WS42 rudder dwg (acad) file on sailnet so I can make them.
@drakeParagon
@drakeParagon 9 жыл бұрын
Powerelectronicsguy L Interesting! I have seen some wind vanes that work with trim tabs. We love the discussions on sailnet! You can also find some W42 info from the Westsail Owners Group at westsail.org and can certainly purchase W42 blueprints from Bud Taplin at westsailparts.com

Nice. In 2010, I hit heavy seas heading southerly past Onset. We hit high seas and thick fog, forcing us to turn around and take refuge for the night in Onset. Thinking ahead, we had reservations at Onset for this possibility. While safely docked there, sailboats were heading in for refuge and anchored in the harbor. Big beautiful sailboats. The next morning, we set off at 5AM to take advantage of the calm morning, but heading south toward Woods Hole was still foggy and had large waves. We turned back, went through the canal and had a wonderful weekend in Plymouth. Sometimes, the best plans are your back up plans! Great video.
@drakeParagon
@drakeParagon 9 жыл бұрын
Michael Kallelis I certainly wouldn't want to go through Woods Hole in fog! :) Sometimes the best plans are your back up plans! We pushed off from Greenland to sail 1500 nautical miles to Ireland, but then broke our steering a day out. We were able to get back to Greenland and then to fix our steering, but my then it was so late in the season that we had lost any possibility of getting another weather window to Ireland. Instead our backup plan was to sail 700 nautical miles to Iceland and by then time we got there it was too late in the season to go anywhere. We spent the winter in Iceland and it was AWESOME! :) In the Spring we went to 600 nautical miles to Faroe, and I don't have the words to express how incredibly beautiful it is here, or how wonderful the people are. We've made so many great wonderful friends here. If we hadn't broken our steering then we never would have even seen Iceland or Faroe... Sometimes the best plans are your back up plans! :) I never sailed to Plymouth - maybe when we sail back to New England we'll go there and then I'll see another part of my home state that I've never even seen before. We are so far away now. Sometimes I really miss Massachusetts.

I think your vent hose for the water tank is blocked. Had the same problem, but with our fuel tank. Funny how the forecast is completely wrong a lot of the time. Typical buzzards bay weather is forecasted for 5 to 10, but what that really means is SW 20 to 25 from the hours of 2:00pm to 8:00pm. Onset is a great anchorage as you probably read my review in ActiveCaptain. You just need to be careful about the turn from the CCC into the channel to Onset. People get confused between the green day marker and the marker for the entrance for Onset. A lot of current runs there and on an eb tide it can actually pull you into that rock pile. Once past that you're golden. Looking forward to your Boston and Gloucester videos.

Great vid and a cliff hanger. When the wind got up Mo asked where would you do a radio check. Probably the better question would be what is the proper etiquette? And as a novice I would like to know the answer to that question too.
@momoparagon
@momoparagon 9 жыл бұрын
Michael Howell Sugar Magnolia Hey Michael! So, according to the Chapman Piloting book, "Calls on Channel 16 to Coast Guard stations and units for radio checks are prohibited by FCC regulations." It goes on to say that modern radios are quite reliable and, if you are hearing chatter, your VHF is most likely working. However, if you still would like to do a radio check, you should move to a working channel that has a conversation going. When the conversation is finished, you should then hail one of the boats and request a radio check. It states that if you are unable to find a working channel with talk, you may make a call on channel 16, but "don't try to get your report there - shift to a working channel to have the other station tell you how he heard you." It also emphasises over and over that this should be kept short and sweet...and should be done infrequently, if at all.
@Ilsabug1
@Ilsabug1 9 жыл бұрын
Thanks. The last time we checked ours I hailed Boat US and stated I wanted to do a radio check, and was instructed to move to channel 10. It seams we have static outgoing but were transmitting all of the way Deaton's from Brown creek which is about 10 miles. There is a lot to learn on the water with rules and regulations on top of learning to sail at the same time. Thanks and Fair winds.

Great video as always I think you guys are producing an outstanding series and am always keen to see the next episode... I felt Drakes trepidation when faced with reefing a full main with 25+ knots over the stern. The text overlay says it was accomplished easily... I would love to know how you did that without turning up wind with a full batten main?
@drakeParagon
@drakeParagon 9 жыл бұрын
Shane Cameron Hi Shane, I installed a very affordable Tides Marine Track on Paragon's mast (www.tidesmarine.com/sailtrack). The track makes it much easier to raise and lower the mast. Before I would always have to grab the main sail and pull it down, but with the Tides Marine track now it all just comes down fast from its own weight and I have to use the halyard to make sure it doesn't come down too fast. I was even able to easily pull the main down relatively easily while sailing downwind in 25+knots, but there's no way I could have ever done that without the Tides Marine Track.

Hey Great Videos. My father won the Buzzards Bay Bowl in his 14ft International in 1952. Thanks you so much for reminding me of it. In your opinion what would be a good boat to buy?
@drakeParagon
@drakeParagon 8 жыл бұрын
+Michael Vine Hi Michael. I've seen photos of the International One Design - such a beautiful boat! What a good boat is to buy is a difficult question to answer without knowing more about what you want to do with it and your budget. Coastal day sailing in favorable weather? Or survival at sea in horiffic storms hundreds of miles away from land? Living aboard? Winter climates? Racing? One of my favorite books that you might find interesting is "Best Boats to Build or Buy" by Ferenc Máté - www.amazon.com/Best-Boats-Build-Ferenc-Máté/dp/0920256244

I presently live in Alberta, no ocean near by so at this point it is a hope for the future. But, I will get the book you mention from the library. I would hope to sail to many a windsurfing site, as I am also a fanatical windsurfer. So I guess living on board and sailing at sea could be an option. Thanks for the book of note. I will give it a read. Love your videos. Fair winds to you both

Your compass error it is not due to magnetic declination because magnetic poles and geographic poles aren't at the same location so maybe that's your 10 degrees off.

Drake is your chartplotter/radar reading true North or Magnetic, because up here in the Northeast the correction is about -14degrees isn't it? @20:39
@drakeParagon
@drakeParagon 9 жыл бұрын
+Tom A I think it's all magnetic because it's using a fluxgate compass. The radar overlay on the chartplotter feature doesn't work unless the Furuno fluxgate compass is turned on. I found this interesting table that shows the Magnetic Declination Values for the Fifty State highpoint.. www.peakbagging.com/Mag.htm It's showing that the correction is about 14 degrees in Rhode Island.

0Gabbberbene Hi Gabberbene - Yes, We pushed off from Oriental, North Carolina in March of 2013 (Season 1, Episode 8) and have since sailed over 10,000 nautical miles and accumulated over 1500 hours of video footage. We sailed up the US East Coast to as far as Gloucester where we picked up our crew Eanna and then sailed on to Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and on to Greenland where we explored the south west coast for almost 3 months before sailing on to Iceland. We spent the winter in Iceland where we worked tirelessly everyday to produce our season 1 episodes. In the Spring we sailed on to Faroe for 3 months, and then to Scotland, through the Caledonian Canal and then down the east coast of Ireland to the southern coast where we spent last winter working on Season 2. In the Spring we sailed up the west coast of Ireland (completing a full circumnavigation of Ireland), then up the west coast of Scotland (picking up our crew Adam and Kristin in Oban) and then on to Stornaway in the Outer Hebrides. From there we sailed back to Faroe were we are right now in the capital of Tórshavn. We are now trying to figure out where to spend this winter and are looking forward to getting back to full time editing and working as hard as possible to finish Season 2 and to produce Season 3! We always try to post real time updates on our Facebook page at facebook.com/DrakeParagon and when Monique has any extra time she has written some great stories of our voyage on her blog at 39degree.blogspot.com. Fair winds,

Oh, sometimes cup-o-noodles is just perfect on a sail...especially when doctored up with some soy sauce, sesame oil, sriracha, and chili garlic sauce! Do you add anything to yours? ⚓-Monique

I sometimes add steamed mushrooms or imitation crab meat. Add a dash of pepper. You guys really need to get some Kraft Mac and Cheese on board :)

Ha! You may be right. It is pretty tasty, though it requires a tad more 'cooking'. Even when I'm seasick I can usually make a cup-o-noodles. Boil water. Done. (✿◠‿◠) ⚓-Monique

At 12:40 you say its ok to throw glass and cardboard overboard. I understand they are, at some point, biodegradable but it doesn't seem right. Im not a sailor so not saying its wrong; but sounds wrong

pgreenx Plastic of any kind is the real killer. It never degrades. It just pollutes and causes enormous problems for marine life. But I think wood, metals and glass don't really harm the environment. Sometimes they can even add, like when a steel ship is scuttled it can create a habitat for marine life where there was none before.

christopher peterson I got that dry erase board so that I can always easily write the forecast down. Otherwise I'd never remember it in detail. But you have to write fast! :) Otherwise if you miss it then you have to wait for the whole report to finish and repeat again. I also got the board so that if we ever hear a distress call then I can quickly grab the board and write down the position.

DrakeParagon's Real Cruising Life Absolutely. Sometimes the forecast plays so fast that I miss a part of it and have to wait for the whole thing to finish before it repeats. It would be so much easier to play back, pause and rewind.

Global Marketing by Design Thanks for the feedback, It really helps us to figure out how to improve on the production of our future episodes and we really appreciate it. Quite few folks have been commenting that that last song was a bit too loud. We have been considering releasing 2 versions of every video, one with music, and one without. Maybe as an extra feature to show our appreciation to our patrons.
