Sorry to be a smart arse, but I knew that wouldn't fly through four layers of thick sailcloth PLUS DST. All sticky tapes gum up the needle. The LATEST Sailrite with bigger motor and Monster wheel MIGHT just plough through, but get a demo to prove it. And check you have $2,000 in your account. Sunbrella and the like are a breeze to sew with many machines, but HD sailcloth x 4 is a job for industrial machines. Most machines are OK with spinnaker patching. Also consider a silicone spray to lube the passage of the needle.

Well done Drake and Mo, you did what seafaring folk have always done, look out for others. And when things don't go to plan, you come up with another plan. And its always the way that when you want some equipment to work it won't. I guess the lesson for me was to keep all your equipment serviceable especially the stuff you dont use just in case you need it in emergency ... I will be servicing my outboard as soon as I can. It's also my ancillary motor. I love following your adventures. You guys saved the day, made memories and a lifelong friend. Keep sailing

I have a 1947 201k exactly like his but with a knee electric control. It is by far the best machine I’ve even sewn on and it is also the quietest! Far more than any modern one and will not even flinch. Truly amazing. I have an overlocker and never use decorative stitches, so así really do not need anything else.

FWIW, You forgot a step at 4:00 setting it up. After the thread comes out of the handle it should be wrapped around that metal post counter-clockwise so the tail end runs under the thread coming out of the handle. This keeps tension on it. 😊

I'm curious, you sung the praises of the Husqvarna and İ wondered how you thought it compared to the Supernova? I'm looking for the perfect old machine to have on my home, S/V Here Now. I would love to know how much they weigh. The Sailrite is pretty expensive and has no free arm. I'm looking for one machine that does almost everything from silks to sails and obviously İ don't have space for more than one. Thanks for your input.

It was just her impeller. None of that was required (maybe the initial tow if she didn’t have the leeway time for the repair). Impeller is maybe 10 minutes if you've done it before (and you shouldn't have a motor at sea if you haven’t serviced an impeller before). Anyway it's not a big deal, but all that faffing about was just extra unnecessary dram....
@drakeParagon2 ай бұрын
Actually, it wasn’t her impeller at all, and if she had changed it out right then and there,then it wouldn’t have made any change to how her engine was overheating at all. I believe Hazel explains it all on the videos on her channel @SailingAlanouwoly. 😊👍🏼
@drakeParagon2 ай бұрын
My understanding is that many weeks prior back in France, Alanouwoly’s engine was overheating. At that time, Hazel hired a mechanic, and they discovered that the impeller had broken apart. They then replaced it with a brand new one, and the engine seemed to run fine. Weeks later, in Spain, her engine overheated again, and we towed her back to Gijon. She then hired another mechanic and they discovered that a piece of the 1st impeller (the one that broke in France and got replaced) had finally clogged the cooling system. It had been in there for many weeks without causing a full blockage, but it finally did cause a clog, and a new engine overheat. So there was nothing wrong with the new impeller that was running in there when the engine overheated and we towed her, and just changing it then and there wouldn’t have fixed it.
@patrickfitzoot2 ай бұрын
@drakeParagon well in her video it says it was completely trashed, so not intact. Would the blockage from the bits slowed cooling with the new impeller? Absolutely, but it would've still cooled better. Also, when an impeller fails you are supposed to either retrieve the bits, or go through the cooling system to make sure they all flushed away. These are basic maintenance issues. Fwiw, if she replaced the impeller with an aged "new" impeller, rubber often doesn't age well. I prefer new off the busy shelf impeller to stored in a boat for 10yrs impeller (those are just secondary back up). So either an aged impeller was installed or her raw water intake is clogged, because an impeller should not disintegrate in a couple of months. Either way, swapping in a new one was the solution that worked for her, I am just saying that can be done at sea, at anchor etc, and should be something a sailor (especially Solo sailor) can do quickly. It's great that you towed her etc, but the lesson is better preparedness by her, and definitely heavier gloves (was she wearing any) ?) while pulling up chain.
@drakeParagon2 ай бұрын
I’ve been told by mechanics that it’s a best practice to use new impellers rather than old ones that have been sitting in a locker for 10 years. Thank you for reminding me that I should get some new ones to replace our now very old spares. When Alanouwoly was overheating back in France and Hazel hired a professional mechanic to fix it, there might have been some things lost in translation. The mechanic had definitely replaced the old impeller with a brand new one, and I think Hazel was under the understanding that he had flushed out all of the old impeller bits from the system. But apparently that was not the case. So even though Alanouwoly had a lot of engine hours on her since leaving France, when we pushed off in convoy in Spain, that’s when the old impeller bits finally worked their way to where they caused a complete blockage. And this blockage caused the new impeller to overheat and break apart. After we towed Alanouwoly to the dock, Hazel hired a new mechanic, and made sure that he completely flushed out everything. The mechanic had to dismantle the whole cooling system to do this, and it took considerable time to do this. When Alanouwoly overheated and we towed her, if Hazel had right then and there swapped out the impeller with >>another new impeller<<, then I wonder how long that one would have lasted? If the old impeller pieces that were caught up in the cooling system were still causing that blockage, then wouldn’t the newly fitted impeller also overheat and break apart? How long would that take? At the time we were running out of daylight and still had a very long day ahead of us to get to the safety of the nearest marina. I think if Hazel had swapped out the impeller right then and there, and if it had also overheated and gotten blown to bits in a short time because of the blockage, then the delay would have meant that we would be making port in the dark, and in much windier conditions, which is definitely something that I felt we had to avoid.

Great video - thanks. Question - I have a Wheeler & Wilson monogrammed treadle pedal & cannot find what model(s) it originally came with. Apparently rare in the USA because I’ve only seen two, one I own. One came from an old industrial factory & mine came from an industrial table with a Wilcox and Gibbs machine in it. I’m beginning to wonder if this pedal was manufactured in another country? The pedal has the typical grid pattern but with a circle in the center & two “W’s & an “&” over-lapping one another inside the circle - similar to a Wilcox & Gibbs pedal. Do you happen to know? (I’m not able to post a pic here). I would like to put this pedal in it’s original style table/stand , along with an original model W&W that my pedal would have come with. Thanks for any help you can give.

Dudette's, if it only took you a month still get over being the living dead from Covid then you're doing well. Now, the weight on a string store bought is a plumb bob. Sorry to be agua fiesta but the way you used it only works in zero wind/tide/other boat tilting shit conditions. A good start to "tweak" from though. I once knew a guy who used a spirit level to build a camper van. An expensive lesson in mystical crap including road camber. Hugs.

Dude! Yeah, I got covid for the 2nd time this year. Sounds like even though north and south hemesphere ought to be 6 months apart, my 2nd time was so so much worse than the 1st. I describe it as in the body? Being rolled down a medium size cliff with big boulders to bounce off. That was the good news. The head "effect" was what I imagine having an axe buried in it feels like. .....If I'd known the benefits of 2 paracietamol and 2 ibuprofen would be, I'd have dragged myself out of bed to the tallboy drawer and scoffed them days earlier. Oh the joy of no longer being unable to sleep because every surface of my body could not take the pressure!!!! My apocolypse kit now contains a month worth of both per persona!!
