Sorry to hear about your bad experience with Tilly’s, Jeff. Customer service has gone to pot here in Australia in all industries, particularly if the person you’re dealing with is of a certain (young) age. Nobody gives a s**t and nothing is ever anybody’s fault. Rant over. All the best mate.

I feel your pain about a lack of responsiveness. I discuss this with older folks about how different customer service is today as opposed to 20-30 years ago. Same as you no call backs, no return emails or texts. Continually prompting from my end and it's just like you are (in today's terms) ghosted. It is so frustrating. Most won't even acknowledge that they received a text or email. Just nothing, and don't get me started on these automated telephone answer systems where you have no option to talk to someone. It's not just parts though, I have been working with a surgeon on an ankle issue and he requested that I call his scheduler when I left his office. I have called every day this week, won't take a call, hasn't returned a call after repeated messages, just nothing. I think it is pervasive throughout society now. Rant over.

Jeff I feel your pain. I sill do a little farming, tractor went down, radiator plugged from hard water. Deere said unrepairable and replacement no longer available. Took me 15 minutes to get a remanufactured radiator, even has a warranty. But the Deere dealer couldn't find one anywhere. Yes customer service is a thing of the past, unless you find an old guy still working who knows what it takes to get and keep a customer. Harley and Dolley my Corgi's said to say hi to Mr Griffy, he be the man.

Having retired from CAT, the problems began when it was decided that we had to hire from the outside. Promoting people up thru the ranks was no longer any good. So we got a lot of executives and managers that had never stepped foot inside a factory or on a piece of iron. Purchasing people were rewarded on finding the cheapest source. Guess what? Quality went to hell on a lot parts, but people got promoted for saving money. Sad to see in a once great company.

Jeff have you considered checking with an Electric Motor repair shop for the bushings? Brownell Electro, and even Grangers used to have Bronze Bushing kits in multiple sizes for all sorts of stuff. Find a bushing with the right OD, and ream the ID to what you need. If I were closer I would make it happen.

so I spoke to a machinist in Florida this morning and was asking him why they just didn't use brass bushings, long story but the jist is the spinning and lack of pressure lube makes it not possible

@@Jpaydirt I was referring to Oil Lite Bronze Bushings. They are porous and retain oil. I've used them in many applications, and they last for years. Isn't your shop compressor an IR T-30? The fly weights under the unloader cover have those bronze bushings in the pivots. They are barely even splash lubed, and they last 30 years for example.

@@Jpaydirt It’s taking a little longer than we expected but I think that’s normal when doing undercarriage. At least that’s what everyone keeps telling me. lol. One track frame had a little damage and we found two used ones with a bunch of almost new parts on them so we bought them thinking it would be quicker to just put all our new rollers etc on those frames to save time. We got the frames and they were in much worse condition than the ones on the cat. So we are taking all the good parts off of them and putting them onto our existing frames. We just had to do a few repairs to our frames. I’ll put up a video soon of the existing frame and the two we purchased. Maybe you have seen that before but I can’t figure out how they cracked them is so many places. Thanks for asking. Appreciate it!!

Jeff, just be carefull with Cat parts prints, they rarely have the heat treat detail if the part is hardened, Cat heat treat specs are IP and found in there 1E specs which cannot be released. That is why Cat Yellow parts are mostly cheap non hardened will fit parts. I'm sure you will find a local machine shop with enough knowledge to reverse engineer the old pins and rollers, the fly weights could be machined from billet steel if needed. Dealers are not all conected on the parts supply chain, some dealer warehouses are that remote they are not included as a source of supply whilst others are in countries that may be at war or have trade sanctions. Your 9 is a vintage machine that has not been in production for 40 years so finding parts made 20 to 50 years ago will just get more challenging with time. Buying second hand you could well end up with parts worse then yours. Someone at Tillys is probably watching your vids. 👍

Jeff I know it would be a PITA but that CAT part you ordered that is rough and suspect won't seal it would add to to cost greatly but it wouldn't be a real big deal to TIG weld that surface then turn it down to original thickness. That would be a much better solution than machining it and it turning out thinner than original and not sealing. But again it is going to extend your down time.

It used to be parts guys were old wrench turners that knew what they were looking at. All the ag equipment companies I work with have similar supply chain inequities and parts people that have no clue what they are looking at. John Deere used to have and probably still does have all their hardware part numbers listed so you could see dimension and other specs so on your bushing you could match something up that might be a hair longer or need the center hole drilled but at least had options. No days the parts people don’t know how to use it

China doesn't care if the parts work ,they just produce numbers and zero quality control.Look how they work, wrecking machines left and right.Putting new tracks on beyond completely worn out undercarriages. Popping tracks back on like rubber bands. The safety footwear is flipflops . How is it we never see human carnage videos from these things because they must have massive amounts of that too. It's corporate greed from top level management ,they want to make a profit for shareholders but now they want all the money in all the corporations. We don't have it. It's getting to the point where it's too expensive to do anything so nothing is done. Then what will they do? It looks like they're about to find out. We'll make do,weld it up,grind it down, patch it ,put in parts that are worn but will work awhile, etc. But these corporations can't,they don't know how, then the learning begins. It'll be a hard lesson and a near vertical learning curve.

It’s bad enough with keeping older equipment going when companies quit making parts for older equipment now days because all the equipment is made everywhere in the world and put together in some other place and these companies making pieces for equipment change ownership like we change our underwear there are parts discontinued for equipment that’s only ten years old. They don’t want you to fix anything they want you to buy new anymore. It all sucks for sure.

It made me sad to listen to your discussion of this problem and then to read some of the comments made by others who have experienced the same thing. I remember talking to you about six years ago and your thoughts at that time were that Cat should be proud of the longevity of their machines and the people who were working with them. You have found out that is not the case. Cat would prefer that machines older than maybe fifteen years should go to the scrap dealer, so they can sell new ones. They fail to realize that there are a lot of people who can't see the business sense in spending what it costs for a new D9, or D10 sized machine when you don't have forty hours of work for it each week, fifty weeks a year. You need to find a small machine shop, maybe a hobbiest who would enjoy the challenge of making those parts from a chuck of round metal. There are a lot of them out there that can get you what you need. Another thought would be to machine the bad part on a lathe and mill till the finish was correct.
