A lot of people say the whale and the astronaut/space concept did not make sense in the Sing For You MV, but it actually has a lot of significance. The whale concept was derived from the a whale called Alice aka ‘The Loneliest Whale in the World’, who is an unidentified whale species, being the only whale emitting a call at 52-hertz (like a lonly sad song) The astronaut concept was derived from the story of the astronaut *Michael Collins* who spent 48 minutes in his spaceship and coming back saying that those 48 minutes were the longest and most loneliest of mankind. The combination of these two concepts placed within the MV discusses being away from home, being somewhere unfamiliar (since the whale and astronaut is in space) and being isolated. Isolation was one of the themes in the mv (when Kai was seen being alone when the other members were playing/when Chanyeol and Suho were fighting). The song and the MV seems to talk about how everyone, in their lifetime, would meet a low point where they feel most isolated and most out of their place, but that this song (and EXO) will be there to warm their hearts. In a way, this song could also be indirectly dedicated to the members who have left considering the lyrics of the song. Thx for the reaction

While the 52 hertz whale makes sense in this context, I was under the impression that the inspiration was the poem called "Astronaut's Whale" about a whale who didn't feel like he belonged in the sea and went to space! There he met an astronaut as they were happy together before they realized that stars last forever, but their family won't and decided to go back home. I am not sure what was confirmed officially though! P. S. Around the same time (like ten days difference) Whalien 52 came out by BTS, so there might have been some confusion due to that.

"Sing For You" is literally, as the title says, EXO singing to EXO-L and some say the MV and song are about how the members feel and how they are dealing with Kris, Luhan and Tao leaving the group. The members really felt like they let fans down during this time and that they broke their promise to always be one. (EXO's slogan is "We Are One." Which represents how even as sub-units they were one group and they are one with the fans, etc. So, when the Chinese members left, the rest of the members felt like as a group they broke that promise.) So this song was a promise and apology song. This was so far from simple times for the members of EXO. This was probably one of the hardest times for EXO and EXO-Ls. That's why you see Chanyeol and Suho get in a fight, because as the leader, Suho really blamed himself for not being able to keep the group together and Chanyeol is pretty much yelling at Suho to stop blaming himself and that there is no point because Kris, Luhan and Tao made their own choices and there is nothing he could have done about it even if he wanted to, etc. They are all angry and sad because they felt like they were all so blindsided by everything that happened because none of the members who left ever said anything to anyone before they decided to leave. A lot happened during this time, and there was so much uncertainty about what it meant for the group, etc. In the beginning you see them happy because this was after they have worked through their anger and are now learning to move on. The parts where you see them sad and angry are flashbacks to recent moments where they were still working through their feelings of anger and sadness. In the end of the MV you start to see them being happy and playing around as friends again because they were learning to get past it all and move on and they made the choice to let it go and to keep singing for us, EXO-Ls. :) The whale seems kind of weird until you discover the meaning behind it all, and then it shows how clever and meaningful they were with the concept. The whale is supposed to represent Alice a.k.a. "The Loneliest Whale in the World", who is an unidentified whale species, she is the only whale that has been found to emit a call at a really high frequency which means that when she speaks there might not be any other whales that can hear her or answer her back. Sehun is the one who is in the spacesuit and he is supposed to represent the lonely feeling you get floating all alone in space. The astronaut comes from the story/poem about an astronaut who spent 48 minutes in his spaceship as he came back to Earth and how he said that those 48 minutes were the longest and most lonely of mankind. The combination of these two concepts, along with the lyrics of the song, talk about being away from home, being somewhere unfamiliar (since the whale and astronaut are in space) and being isolated from everything and everyone. Isolation is one of the themes within the MV. You got the order right in the chorus! First was Chen, second was Baekhyun, third was DO. Very generally, Chen uses more vibrato than the other two, and DO the least. If there are high notes it’s usually Chen, unless Baekhyun‘s going off. Don’t worry, you’re doing really well, you’ll get this! To me the themes are loneliness and companionship, anger and love, sadness and joy. I don’t think the song is about the EXO members, these are things we all feel at different times in our lives. There are 2 theories about what the astronaut and the whale in space mean. Not sure which is accurate. One is about Alice, the loneliest whale in the world. Or the 52 Hertz whale. It's an unidentified whale species that communicates at 52 hertz, well above the communication frequency of any other whale species, so it can literally not communicate with other whales. Some people have theories about the astronaut as well, being related to an astronaut that was in space for 48 minutes and how it was the loneliest 48 minutes of his life. I don't know. The other theory is that the whale and astronaut scene symbolize the poem/children's story The Astronaut's Whale, about an astronaut named Augie, and Vincent the Whale, who were friends. Augie took Vincent to space and they had a lot of fun exploring, but Vincent eventually missed his family and his home, and he realized he didn't belong in space, they went back to their original lives. I honestly think the latter is the more accurate theory, but they both could be possible. Regardless, the theme is about being homesick, feeling lonely, and not belonging. Which could be meant to represent the members that left EXO.
