Looks like a great camera! I currently use the X2 for running videos on my channel. It does pretty good on the road or open spaces. But when I get on the trail with lots of leaves and trees around, it gets a grainy, like the bitrate just isn't sufficient to keep up with all of the detail in each of the frames. Your video is definitely an improvement over those I've done with the X2. So I'll keep telling myself that the X4 is worth the money to upgrade, and maybe sometime in the next year or two I'll finally convince myself and purchase it. 😀 Thanks so much for your demonstration of what this camera can do.

Glad you liked it. You will definitely see a noticeable improvement over X2 in terms of image quality, but also ease of use.

The problem I have running with a 360 on a selfie stick is it changes your gait and stride balance. Not sure it’ll be good for your form over time! Even if you switch sweaty hands!!

It definitely changes your gait and your run form goes out of balance. Same for any action camera. I run with cameras when I am running somewhere new, or when reviewing a camera. So hopefully not frequently enough to impact my form over time. Hopefully!

Great post ❤ Does the lens have to be aimed at a specific angle so that the stick becomes totally invisible? Because when you are holding it lowered behind you , it is not easy to control where the lens is facing.

Thanks. No it doesn’t matter. So long as the X4 is in a straight line with the selfie pole, the pole will get hidden in the stitch line. If you look at the first part of this video sequence where I am running down some steps you can see the bullet time handle in my right hand. The rest of the stick is invisible.

Some interesting perspectives, thanks. I have the X1 and X3. I don't use them for running else the footage would also show the arrival of an ambulance, but I find them great for capturing family occasions and the like, without missing out on the occasion due to having my eye glued to a viewfinder. Will I upgrade? I am tempted...

I was filming a KZbin video on the X3 at the end of March, so I have a lot of comparison footage taken recently on X3 and X4. IMO there is a big difference and if you are tempted you should get the X4. The only comparison footage I included in the video was the bullet time clip from X3 on the beach, I am seeing a big difference in image quality and stitch line concealment with X4 compared to the X3, and the lighting was much better for the X3 clip on a beach than the X4 clip in the woods. Agreed on everything you said. Just did a gravel bike race and having to look down to see if red light is blinking is very crash-prone. Otherwise, incredible device!

Thanks for the review. I’m curious, when you run with the camera are you holding it all the time? Do you store it anywhere when you’re not using it on a run or race and then bring it when you do want to film something? If so what do you use to keep it secure. I can’t imagine running a half marathon or a long run holding a camera the whole way, for me that would be a bit uncomfortable. Thanks

Yes, I hold it throughout. With X4 I put the lens cover on if I know I am not going to film for a mile or so. For longer runs (over 8 miles) or races I do not carry a camera.

I date way back to the Mi Sphere. I have been using Qoocam 8k for several years, but the batteries go bad and you can't buy replacements. Same for lenses. I have been waiting for the new Qoocam, but it never came out. Apparently Insta360 finally got rid of the 15 second gap every half hour when recording with an external battery, so I guess I will have to go back to Insta360. My old Qoocam battery is slowly pushing the back off the camera. I could never go back to 5.7k.

I have been told that X4 does now offer continuous recording without the break but I have not tested it fully. 8K is a game changer, providing enough resolution for usable reframed footage. I don't think it will disappoint you.

I trail run and also do Spartans, etc. Running with a stick is not an option for me. What was wrong with the version 3

I'll trail run with a short pole but I never use a camera when racing. X3 is a good 360 camera but the reframed footage resolution was rarely good enough to use IMO. X4 is still not 4K when reframed but at approx 2.7K (depending on how much you reframe) it is much better and more usable.

If you shoot in single lens mode will it still delete the selfie stick from the recording?

Yes it is deleted in single lens mode if you select 'Me Mode'. This mode turns X4 into a regular point & shoot camera with the Invisible Selfie Stick effect. It gets you a 170° FOV video up to 4K30fps. If you just use regular single lens mode the selfie stick is not deleted.

GoPro Hero 12. It’s the one I reach for most frequently and has the best overall image quality and stabilization.

Thanks Julian, I have a question - the video of you sitting in your office talking to the camera (and holding the X4) - was this shot with an X4 or another camera? If it was shot with the X4, what resolution please?

I should add that I don't have any 360 camera, my friend has an X3 and sent me some footage but I find that a little soft on faces, my application is going to be mainly walking around with people I interview, so will have two people, mostly upper or full body walking/talking outdoors and I'm wondering whether the X4 is going to be fine for this or our heads will end up looking too soft?

All the studio footage is shot on a Sony A7C / 16-35mm.

The X3 footage when reframed is soft and low resolution IMO. X4 is significantly better. However, if your main use is going to be interviewing people I don’t think a 360 camera is what you need. You will spend a lot of time in post production reframing lots of interview footage. My two cents.

Is there a mount to attach this to a trail running hydration vest?

The X4 uses a regular camera tripod mount, there is a threaded socket on the bottom of X4. You can securely attach it to any number of such mounts. You could use the Peak Design Capture Clip or a similar backpack shoulder strap mount to mount it. However the last time I used a hydration vest it wasn't easy to secure it tightly, I would expect the vest to move a lot as you run. The camera image might be able to cope with that, the Flow State stabilization is incredible on the X4, but you may find the camera itself moves about too much on your vest and be uncomfortable when running. Hope this helps

The image quality looks so muddy compared to DJI Action 4 and pocket 3 though.

It is not realistic to compare the image quality of any current consumer 360 camera to Action 4, Hero 12 or Pocket 3. The image of a 360 camera is compromised by the extreme wide angle and the reframing process. If you don’t need the ‘shoot now reframe later’ flow of a 360 camera… any of those regular cameras is going to get you better image quality.

@@samer820In that mode it will be up to 4K, higher resolution than reframed 360 footage but still using the extreme wide angle lens and software to hide the selfie pole. As a 360 camera compared to anything else in the consumer space that I have used, X4 is a significant step up. But if you are looking for it to match the image quality of Hero 12, Action 4 or Pocket 3 you will be disappointed

i Find Insta 360x4 camera not Crispy Sharp , Like on that Ground And Trees , Less Detail , Blurry

There can be a host of reasons why you see that. A 360 camera is not as sharp as a regular camera / action camera partly due to the extensive processing and lens demands to get the 360 image. Lighting and movement have an impact, especially lighting. Low light or overcast conditions will pump the ISO up, increase noise and this leads to less detail. Also, easy one to check, make sure you do not have motion blur enabled in the 360 app/desktop. That intentionally blurs the background and foreground to help create the effect of speed and movement. There are more reasons but these are the first that occur to me on reading your comment. Hope this helps.

I have owned many 360 cameras and in my opinion X4 is the best and the one I choose to use. As stated in the video this was not sponsored or paid for.
