There's a 1a. TOOL and a 1b. Pink Floyd. Oddly enough they are eeriely similar in how original and how skilled they are. When I first started listening to TOOL(about 20 years ago), they made me think so much of what I thought Pink Floyd might have sounded like in this day. I listened to a lot of Floyd growing up(I'm 48) and they were always my favourite, until TOOL appeared. My appreciation for the music both bands have put out is indescribable. The level that they've(both bands) taken music to concerning ALL facets of how songs are written is unmatched. We're all very fortunate to be witness such a phenomena..

I've been a hard core TOOL fan for over 20 years and it is only now that I'm starting to realize that this is my favorite album. I listened to an interview with Maynard the other day, and something he said stuck with me. He said when making the songs, they first have to figure out where they are, what landscape are they standing in. And so it got me thinking about the Fear Inoculum album as a whole, what the landscape of it is (to me oc) , and it's kind of empty and quiet and huge. It's like the other albums are about the awakening, and this is about what comes after the awakening, if you REALLY are awakened, the quiet place, where the real fun begins ;)

For all the songs that hit me immediately (Fear Inoculum, Pneuma, 7empest), it's the others (Invincible, Descending and Culling Voices) that are proving the most rewarding over time. In Tool's maturity, they have unbelievably gone to much deeper levels or art and style that it can only be appreciated after many listens. Just like they said, there is so much in the song and the other's like it, one has to listen to it over and over to grasp the nuances. It is sort of like a drug that gets better and better the more you use it. Like DFW's Infinite Jest, is this Tool's masterwork? I hope they have more in them as we love it!

It's like the whole things starts in fluid maybe symbolic of amniotic fluid. Then you emerge.. things feel the descriptions of existance are positive, almost with wonder. And the music is lighter. The beat emerges to be a da-duh da-duh like a heartbeat.. time moves on suddenly the being has recognised the madness of things. Loses hope.. but finally times in to the survivor within his spirit and understands it's all up to himself to bring that strength forward. "Must have every fibre mobilised .. stay alive". . By the climax of the song the heart beat rythm ends abruptly. And the sound of fluids surrounds us again until the silence.

The powerful, almost desperate message combined with how otherworldly it is carried by the instrumentals leads me to believe that Tool's goal with this song is to plant a subconscious suggestion into all of our minds. A suggestion to take conscious action towards the preservation of our own species and planet. Fucking legends.

AlexFrank, (who knows, but ...) to me, it feels like Maynard set up the context for the song’s atmosphere so that the long lack of vocals at the end lets the instrumental speak for itself, and it feels like the final, chaotic tumult of our end or our struggle against it. Potentially descending into a return to a universe without us, as natural and inevitable as the waves.

I've only very recently found your videos, and have seen a number of your Opeth and Tool's Fear Inoculum reactions. Your genuine excitement and enthusiasm is infectious. I'm 64 years old, and I have heard a LOT of music over the years, but Fear Inoculum is my favourite album of all time. It is an absolute masterpiece. It is their Cistine Chapel. Every single note is crafted and has its place. Tool songs are not songs - they are experiences to enjoy over and over again. They have complete mastery of adding layers and texture to their music and creating the most incredible sounds. Credit has to go to the production of course, but the skill and artistry of the whole band is, in my humble opinion, beyond compare. In fact, I feel a little bit of sadness for those people who have not had the privilege of experiencing them.

There’s not a single band anywhere these days that’s able to pull off these sounds, time signatures, and multi-stage arrangements as well as Tool has ever been able to. It’s a good time to be alive and able to respect the complexity of such authentic music. There’s songs on this album and several other Tool albums where the bassist is performing solos while the quitar is in rhythm and still able to keep the music full of sound as well as if there were at least 2 guitarists. The entire band are a one of a kind. Thanks for the video and thanks for Tool for being who they are doing what NOBODY else does.

Descending was a slow burner for me and I know how crazy that sounds and it sounds just as crazy for me to say it. It’s always been the same for me though with every Tool album and some tracks will stand out more than others for a while, even continuous listening doesn’t bring out my favourite tracks. I have to let the album rest or more to the point, my mind rest for a few weeks before I go back and Jesus Christ when I do go back a maturity has taken place. I know what’s there but I don’t really know what’s there. I rediscover the album almost for the first time but on another level and this is how I found descending, it spoke to me in a way it didn’t speak to me before and the way Tool do that with their music will be engrained into my soul in a way no other band has ever managed. Both of you guys encapsulated how I feel when I listen not only to Descending but Tool as a whole. The ending of the song for you was a perfect reaction, not wanting the track to finish but leaving you depleted and astonished at the same time and wanting more. Just keep listening to Tool and they’ll always provide you with more.

Beautiful New Year's Day gift. Thank you Dylan and [your beautiful wife's name]. Yet another TOOL masterpiece. This is a truly epic song. Epic. The lyrics are profound and express the zeitgeist. For me, Maynard has captured the perilous state of Western Civilisation. Musically, it is a triumph and Adam showcases his talents as seldom before. My favourite song on this album but only by a whisker.

This is my third time of watching this reaction. You both get me pumped! My favorite song on the album, right now. Been part of the Tool Army since '95, and still find parts in all their songs that I didn't notice. This will take me decades to swim through.

Something I don't hear too many talk about is the genius of their usage of effects. The perfect amount and timing of delay, reverb, doubling you name it. Major props to the studio producers also.
