I've never understood people calling anything they do "filler". The album Ænima for example, already had nine amazing songs for a total of 66 minutes. It's not like they didn't have enough for an album yet. Every piece fits the greater context of the suite.

This is Tool's absolute apex. It's the most significant work these 4 people have made. Lateralus is a masterpiece of an album, but these tracks specifically are the height of their musical output. Everything that was happening in their lives allowed for them to reach this level, if only briefly (a place most artists never reach). They were still young enough men, most of which still didn't have a family to focus on and could devote themselves to their craft and output. These three pieces represent something more akin to classical music playing on rock (and world) instruments than rock songs. Are there even verses or choruses or bridges here? I was just getting into Tool as this album was released, I was 17 at the time and completely not ready and yet fully available for what this album had to give me. I saw Tool for the first time the next year on my 18th birthday and I hadn't really absorbed these three pieces yet. The band rocked like hell took about a 15-20 minute intermission and came back out to play this trilogy and it changed my life. I know people often say things like that, but in this case, it's not hyperbole. It changed my life. I was by myself in a sea of strangers who were all there tuned into the exact same frequency. I rethought the kind of person I wanted to be. The path I was on, the people I associated with, my relationship with myself and with art with an honesty I'd never been able to access. Sometimes we can have a deeply profound experience with art and it can shift our thinking and perspective on life. I purposely don't listen to these tracks very often, but I will sometimes during key moments of transition in my life. Lately I've been to Tool again and from a different perspective in life and again feel drawn to this piece. There is a lot obscuring behind a corner in my life at the moment and the best I can do is remain vigilant and open. Spiral Out.

Also, when you watch Danny play live, his arms move so fast they seem blurry

Second to last date of that tour at Lawler Event Center, Reno NV, with Meshuggah opening, was not only the greatest Tool show I’ve seen(out of 9) but had got to be the greatest concert I’ve ever experienced(out of too many to count). They closed with the Holy Trinity and Lateralus, which was bridged by an Easter egg, a brief version of Wings for Marie. But for Reflection and Triad, was one of the rare times in concert I saw Maynard don a guitar and play, and for icing on the cake, Triad had a couple of the guys from Meshuggah come out and play the song with them, in particular, their drummer Tomas Haake, playing a standing drum set, he and Danny just KILLED it. That night was one of those bookmark moments in my life and I’ll never forget it. I was lucky enough to actually find footage of that concert on KZbin

Reflection really makes me feel some things. I can tell you guys were feeling it, too. When the lyrics kick in, the way they're so haunting overlayed on the sweet melody of the instruments, it's just otherworldly. Which fits in with the actual lyrics and all their talk about space. But there's a message there for us all, and it's stated so poetically. I think the most poignant is: "As full and bright as I am, This light is not my own, A million light reflections Pass over me" None of us are in this alone and none of us are an island. We all affect those around us and are all affected by everyone else. We should all remember when we do anything, the ways that it may affect other people. I have issues with it myself, but I am trying.

And TOOL provided the vehicle for my path n they literally CHANGED MY LIFE!! I'm a better human for it. I thank them every day for this gift of spiritual and enlightening 🎶 music for the masses. Keep on fighting the good fight as I too try to maintain. But living with a toxic narcissist TRYS ME. the messages in their songs seem as tho the universe is telling me it's time to go! I still haven't hears anything like it. If anything, this album sound almost ancient to me. There are moments where bands like ISIS and Neurosis and Om give me some of what Tool were doing on Lateralus, but then I'll listen to "Disposition/Reflection/Triad" and I'm reminded that no, this work is quite singular. I'm also a big Rush and King Crimson fan and can identify the reference points and DNA that have found their way into Tool's catalogue, but even then, Tool occupy their own landscape.

Yes! And if you give it a close listen, it’s a little different from the same fill he had going during the opening bridge part. Both of them are so annoying to learn on guitar, because while it’s only two frets and about three finger motions on the left hand, you really have to have good discipline with your left hand to nail the hammer-ons and pull offs right. I still haven’t got the second part down. Just goes to show how inventive Jones is with “simple” riffs.

I am not exaggerating when I say, Reflection is like a spiritual, out of body experience for me every single time I listen to it

24:23 I'm right with u there my friend. Their music has that effect on those who are fortunate enough to be in a higher vibration to really, really appreciate it! 🙏 Amazingly, some ppl don't get their music at all!? With other bands I usually accept their opinions with kind of indifference. But wen it comes to TOOL! I just feel sad for them....weird huh? Anyway, love n light to u and yours.

Vektor - Recharging The Void. It will blow your mind. As for the next Tool song, I’d recommend Eulogy.

Still „Forests of Legend“ and „Accelerating Universe“ are the best songs by Vektor, by lightyears.

I’ll never forget her first reaction to Tool (Fear Inoculum track) and what she said immediately after. It truly sums up what Tool is for me and others. She said to him : “I feel like I was at an amusement park and I just got done riding all of the rides”, with a huge cheesy grin on her face. 😁
