Jesse Herbert oh you'd be surprised at what my musical knowledge is lacking. I thought I was well educated in all things music but if this channel has taught me anything, it's that I'm not in as good a place as I thought! Ask me about pre 1990 metal, I'm your man, ask me about 90s British alternative, there's not much I don't know, electronica, reggae and dub, psychedelic rock, space rock, trip hop, Americana, ambient, etc I'm fine with. I don't get lumbered with a single genre, I love music of all kinds as long as it's real, it's emotional. Learning all the time!

they are an incredible band, just don't put them on such a high pedestal like the fanboys do- they're my favorite band but it's pretty cancerous to act the way uber fanboys do. I love this song so much, especially Danny's playing. He keeps it fairly conserved for the majority of the song (speaking in terms of Danny standards), and right at the end he just fucking ASSAULTS the listener. I've probably spent several thousand hours listening to their entire catalog over and over, and yet my body still cannot help but exhibit some sort of physical reaction to it nearly ever time (goosebumps, hair standing up, sudden chills, etc.). The whole premise of this song is about maturity and development, while using alchemical, astronomical, and mythological symbolism. The irony is that Maynard doesn't want people to focus on the lyrics, but their lyrics are so well thought out and portrayed that you just wnat to. You start listening to tool once for the music, twice for the lyrics, and thrice plus ten times for repetition. And down the rabbit hole you'll go as well. Thumbs up.

Commenters: stop taking about the Fibonacci Sequence! It’s not the best thing about the song it belongs to and it’s definitely not a sign of ingenuity.

A lot of people just want to seem like they know something nobody else does. Maynard even said that it didn't really play in to how they made the album. It just kinda happened.

Jeffery Tucker Yes, he said what M. Stone is saying but not that the structure of the song is based on the Fibonacci sequence, just Maynard's phrasing. He even said something to the effect that it was lame for him to point to it like that and that he "can do better." For me, choosing to do that with the phrasing offers a very nice syncopation, but I hope it's only the beginning of more things that music can do, if you know what I mean.

Man I loved seeing your reaction to the part at 9:22. To me that section feels like these guys were holding back a monster and then they let it loose inside your head and it's completely unrestrained. I've listened to this song hundreds of times, it kicks my ass every single time.

You hit the nail on the head. They can make beautifully complicated compositions, yet they arrange it in such a way that there’s space between all instruments. No one instrument overwhelms the mix. Brilliance. Listen to Jambi. The guitarist (Adam), is playing essentially the bass line early on with palm-muted rhythmic patterns. Very unusual and unique arrangement. Incredible stuff. If you want the height of their instrumental capabilities, go for Lost Keys/Rosetta Stoned. They need to be played together, and you’ll probably want to scan the lyrics beforehand. It’s basically a story based on a very realistic acid trip a friend of theirs had. The music is serious, but there’s plenty of humor in the lyrics.

Despite being really into alternative rock as a teen in the early 90s I somehow missed out on Tool & only discovered them about 8 or 9 years ago & I was kicking myself for having missed out on such a masterful band for so long. I was a big fan of Soundgarden back in the day (still am) and I know I would have absolutely loved Tool then. Hands down my favorite band of all time & I struggle to imagine how they can be surpassed in my estimation. I just never get tired of listening to them!

It’s quite a nice surprise that you discover Tool now. It’s refreshing to see your reactions indeed! I started listening to them in 1997-1998 and the song that got me was “46&2” and still is my favourite (first love you know) There are many more complicated songs and all of them are just terrific. To the day, no other band makes me feel the goosebumps better than them. Enjoy!

The whole song is actually in different subdivisions of 5! Sometimes the pulse is in eighths, sometimes quarters. I couldn't really get my head around it the first few listens. Danny also plays a trick at the "Let go" section by adding a quarter note pulse polyrhythm over the eighth note pulse you had been feeling before.

Its easy, if you just Try and do it for the right cause, art. Do it, be. I'm so impressed by this drummer ability to sound universal and hes accepted that humans are born crazy, and then they dared to be CRAZY from the start and behave. Not many bands get that and keep it for such a long time. Artistic Freedom.

Reading these comments. A reiteration of the thoughts I feel when I try to get my wife (and others as well) to appreciate the profound beauty/wisdom/magic/mystery (adverb and adjectives can go on for awhile) that nearly any Tool song can elicit. Particularly Laterallus. I think it was the first Tool album I heard repetitively over the course of time, but simultaneously didn't hear it at all. I clearly recall listening to it repeatedly during the first couple years following its release. I worked at a regional (but national) telecom company, updating and digitizing telecom maps b/n 2000-2005. For countless hours this CD might play on repeat as I worked my days. It was a background sound that soothed and motivated. I never had any idea of the lyrical content, only that it seemed somehow important. That in itself is odd to me thinking back, because I never ignore lyrics, but since few were readily available at the time, and I was busy doing my work, I didn't delve. I simply enjoyed. It was a few year later, after 10,000 Days that I somewhat started listening. But again, I didn't listen on understand. I just enjoyed. Fast forward around 10 years. A couple years ago I dug out the first cassette tape of a Tool CD a friend had given me back in 92 or thereabouts that I liked, but again, never "heard". By this time (2016~) I had been a long time (albeit very tardy) Bill Hicks fan. Now I started realizing the connection. My world was beginning to have a new clarity. Now I hear Tool MUSIC and am grasping the profound template for what was in my head, possibly where pieces emerged, the significance, more so, the beauty, the depth... It's not just rock music, it's much more.
