It’s about the hypocrisy of a “fan”, who is the ultimate consumer, criticizing the mainstream success. “I met a boy wearing Vans, 501s and a Dope Beastie T, nipple rings new tattoos....And in between sips of Coke he told me that he thought we were selling out.” Great song and dope album. In my fav top 5 best albums of all time for sure. That album opened my mind to so many sounds. Check out 46 & 2

Maynard proceeded to call out this kid’s bullshit and roast him with one of the heaviest songs they have made. He tells him that we all are the man. We all want money. Everything is an ad. If you listen carefully during that bass solo at about 2.5 mins, you can hear an excerpt of comedian Bill Hicks; "consume, be fruitful and multiply". Correct interpretation once again ! Many artists get accused of "selling out" as soon as they get some commercial success, especially bands that labor in obscurity with a rabid cult following for many years before then. My favorite quote about the phenomenon was about Metallica getting mainstream success: "People tell us we sold out, and I say, damn right. We sold out every seat at every show at every venue we played." Can you picture yourself in a sold-out Chesapeake Arena (home of the OKC Thunder), screaming along with 40,000 other people FUCK YOU, BUDDY FUCK YOU, BUDDY FUCK YOU, BUDDY FUCK YOU, BUDDY I can, I was, I did. If you ever get a chance to see Tool live, go for it immediately. They're the only band I've seen with a better stage show than Pink Floyd
