BECOME A PATRON TO GET SONGS/TABS: www.patreon.com/coversolutions Please read the description for comments on gear and more (i'm never happy with the tone for Tool, is quite difficult to get, well engineered and the sound of the Wal is really present). For some reason the software notates brackets on the rhythm notation badly, most of this is ternary time so you should group 8ths in 3s, not 2s, that would make it easier to read, so sorry about that. I followed the originally thought 9/8/7 8th time they refer, but i think there's easier ways to think of that main riff. I don't think is necessary to notate harmony here. You have mostly a riff based song and ALL notes interpreted by the bass are based on D minor Pentatonic (D F G A C) and a litte bit of D minor (D E F G A Bb C). So maybe is important to discuss there, that to get most of the Tool sound you need those 2 elements, Pentatonic Riffs applied to rhythm and polyrhythm. You can check that on the intro, with 6/8 for bass and 4/4 for guitar, with many other exapmples throughout the song. The nice thing about playing with this is that most of those notes go really well with each other in harmony (more of a primal, natural or even seminal way of seeing music, pentatonic scale is found in natives all over the world, China, Andes, Native American, etc, etc) Anyways, if you have something else to add or opinions to make, please use the comments wisely. Also attend on streams on fridays for more info on whatever you want

Sometime in the future, would you be able to do Prison Sex by Tool? It has a bit of a weird tuning (BADG) but it isn't too difficult. I can't nail the timing though. Thanks for making great content as usual!
@jay88197 жыл бұрын
Noah Wehler BADG isn't a weird tuning. its one string tuned down. just go light on the B cuz it'll be way floppier than the A,D or G.
@Jacksonrox136 жыл бұрын
Soundgarden have also used that tuning too for quite a few of their songs too ("Rusty Cage," "Searching With My Good Eye Closed," "Holy Water," "Rhinosaur," "Never The Machine Forever") and other artists have gone even further down with the full octave, i.e. AADGbe. There's "Boris" - Melvins, several Them Crooked Vulture songs, "Stacked Actors" - Foo Fighters, "Citizen Erased" - Muse, The most impressive detuned songs I've heard are from Isis and Boris. Boris have gone down to Drop G# for "Vomitself" and "Heavy Rocks" (they usually okay in A# Standard) and Isis basically tuned their first string even further to F#, the first string on an 8-String guitar. It's some kind of odd open tuning where the 6th string is in B standard, the 5th-2nd strings are in C# standard and the 1st string is simply F#: the same note as the 5th note but one octave lower. Similar to the "AADGbe" tuning mentioned earlier. Meshuggah have also done the octave tuning too, but for an 8-String instead (B B Eb Ab Db Gb bb eb, as they play one semitone down) for "Spasm," and also managed to slacken the 8th String as low as E0 at the very beginning of "Mind's Mirrors" (although Fredrik just twangs on it a couple of times to give the track a spooky atmosphere-he doesn't actually play on it) and then retunes it back to normal before the "singing" start. Lastly, Strapping Young Lad tuned their first 3 strings to AAA (the other 3 are in Open C) on their eponymously named track, "AAA."

7:21 Would Sliding be an alternative method on that section instead of a Whammy Pedal? Or would it not be possible?
@TromboneSauce4 жыл бұрын
I've done it before, but it isn't the same. You can't get the full octave in it by just sliding on the high d string. It kinda works though. Just beware you might give yourself a blister lmao.
@drazlet4 жыл бұрын
What I’ve taken to doing is playing octaves and sliding into and back down on every note. Since that’s kind of hard to keep up, I think sliding into sounds best with the Gs, and sliding down sounds best with the D-C-D-F thing. I tried doing sliding from low to high and back down again, but it’s immensely difficult physically, as well as impossible to keep it all on the low D string (which is integral to the tone)

Hey man! You're always doing a great job. I simply love your videos (even more when are tool covers). Unfortunatly I can't help you on patrion yet, but as soon as possible, I'll retribute for the arts you do for all of us. I just love tool and justin chancellor tones in the musics. I imagine you may have searched around about it and found out that most of the tone comes from the Wal bass. It's simply unique. But a lot comes from an pre-amp that he uses BEFORE spliting the audioline in two (dirty and clean). It's almost the first pedal that he plugs for gigs and recording. If you use an pre-amp in an satisfying way, you can have the heavy and punchy sound he kicks from his bass. The mid and high from wal are simply impossible to replicate, but the bass can be and will became very satisfying. If you read this, please say a word and let's discuss more about justin's tone! You've got to admit, it's one of the most amazing among all.
