If you think your mind is blown now, you should check out how Maynard delivers these lyric syllables to the Fibonacci sequence (a mathematical sequence in which each number is the sum of the previous two numbers, e.g. 1-1-2-3-5-8, etc). Gives a whole new meaning to “spiral out” when you consider that the Fibonacci sequence is called the “Golden Spiral” when graphed out. 🤯

You are right! Adam Jones, Danny Carey, and Justin Chancellor spend and absurd amount of time composing and completing the bass, drums, and guitar. They do it all together and record it. They then send the music to Maynard who writes the lyrics and sings them. Tool are full of masters of their craft. Maynard considers his voice as just an instrument and no more important than any other aspect of the music. Over the years he has started performing further and further to the back of the stage so he can hear his voice blend into the music, and so he isn't center. The guys are amazing. There is a lot of energy in their music. Danny Carey, and the others, are into sacred geometry and other esoteric ideas to try instill their music with something tangible. *edit* you should really see them live

The entire song is based around the fibonacci sequence, where the previous two number added together make the next number in the sequence. An example is 2+3=5 then 3+5=8, 5+8=13 ect. The intro is 1:12 long, the first 3 numbers of the sequence. The syllables also follow this pattern. Black (1) then (1) white are (2) all I see (3) in my infancy (5) red and yellow then came to be (8) reaching out to me, let's me see (13) The entire fucking song is like this, all while telling us not to over think or over analyze...

You are correct. The poetry and vocal melodies are usually injected into the mix after the music is at least 90% done. Maynard claims to need to hear the sounds for inspiration in order to write. What a respectful and powerful way for a front man to find his place in the music instead of just wanting the spotlight. And in doing so he reveals his brilliance.

Tool is a "tool" for self improvement. The complex instrument arrangements are meant to grab your attention and put you into a vibe. The lyrics are a message of improvement, Lateralus can be the process of "the Great Work", but will all Tool songs they are open to interpretation. Tool is my favorite band of all time. I love tons of music, but they're my base, my home to come back to. I've been listening to them since the mid 90's and have heard all these songs countless times. I've seen them 10 times in concert over the years. One of my favorite things to do now is watch reaction videos to their songs, its so fun to watch people experience their music for the first time. Glad to see you liked it! Nothing quite hits like Tool, you get pieces from other music but it really is its own thing.

Also, they seem to write by jamming out, making riffs, generating a motif, composing the movements...... AND THEN Maynard adds the vocals to fit the melody and overall theme. (As a bonus, Maynard's abstract yet relatable lyrics (just relatable human nature stuff like anxiety!), add another layer to eternalize. This "music first" approach is what I think feels so great about them: A no compromise approach to sound and music. As you progress towards the newest album, it becomes more apparent! Lateralus was my first Tool album. Came out in 2001. I saw them in concert that year, right after 9-11. I’m 38 now, but I still think back to how amazing that concert was. I have “Ride the spiral to the end” on the back of my car.
