@@EclipsReactions damn right! if it was just flashy skill or dexterity with multiple rhythm patterns even THAT would be awesome (but Danny Carey is so good, restrained and calculated when needed, he makes this difficult shit look EFFORTLESS 🔥)

Goes to show you don't have to give in to age. I dunno how long he can realistically keep that level up, though.

That's why he's called "The Octopus" :)

My daughter is a music major in college and views this Tool song as a modern "percussion concerto". Some Tool songs like Schism are bass-led as opposed to the usual guitar, but this one is definitely a showcase around Danny and his drumming. Every member of Tool gets time in the spotlight. They really are an amazing band.

Now that you have heard his most talented acolyte, I think it's time you hear "The Professor," himself, Neil Peart. A few years ago, Carry had this to say about Peart (drummer for the legendary progressive rock trio, Rush); "Neil was so defined and he was such a precise composer in the way he played that that was a big influence on what I wanted to do with the band - to be in a band that did compositions, and it wasn't just jamming and stuff like that." Rush had a huge influence on Tool and, eventually, Tool would have some reciprocal influence on Rush (which was active from 1974 to 2015). If you like intricacy, power, and complexity in your music (which you must, if you like Tool), you'll wind up loving Rush too. Peart was known for many things, one of which were his epic drum solos. Most people like to start with his "R30" Frankfurt performance in 2004, but there are many from which to choose. I'd recommend this one from 1988, which finds his solo embedded within one of Rush's most popular instrumental numbers, YYZ: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aHabZpehhL6bqrMsi=d2EDxquND0Ldp6Zu Thanks for your efforts, which are very much appreciated!

It's pretty nuts that he's said this isn't even the most difficult song for him to play. I think he said Invincible was.

Tool live is amazing!. Seen them in the mid 90s then again recently at Sonic Temple Columbus Ohio. Enjoyed the reaction as always!!! I normally record live performances at concerts for my youtube channel but Tool prefers you not to and enjoy the show. I usually honor any bands wishes in those regards. So I did not record Tool.

Tool, one of the few bands where you can find three people riding three different grooves and all still be in time. Saw them on this tour right before COVID ruined everything. It indeed is an experience watching The Octopus at work.

and to play all this from memory (and this isn't even one of the craziest examples for careys drumming given there are multiple polyrythmic pieces by Tool)

I never heard his name before, but I saw him play on the Beat tour with Belew, Levin, and Vai. He managed shyt I saw two and three drummers do. Just now a fan. Check out "Thela Hun Ginjeet" or "Frame By Frame" by King Crimson. He pulled that off. Obviously following him now.

Michael Jordan on the court, Marc Marquez riding a motorcycle, Danny Carey playing drums. These are what is known as virtuosos of their crafts. Their degree of talent can't be explained. It can be both inspirational and soul crushing. The work they put in is unreal, but they get to be the best in the world at something, and few know what that feels like.

Trivia on Danny Carey: The reason he wears a Boston basketball outfit at all his concerts is because he was drafted by them. He had to decide when he was 17 if he wanted to do professional basketball or continue to drum. I'm pretty sure the entire musical world is happy he chose drums :) This drum composition took years for Danny to write and it is widely considered to be one of the most difficult to perform ever. Danny was 58 at the time of this live show. At one stage during this performance he is maintaining 4 different beats with his arms and legs.

@tjm6983Күн бұрын
Yeah, never heard that so I just checked & it said he only got offers to play at small colleges & knew he wasn't good enough for beyond that. Still impressive. He doesn't always wear the Celts jersey. In recent years when they've played he's often worn the jersey of the local or state college of the location. Also Kansas Jayhawks jersey specifically since he's from Kansas & he's gone to perform with their band at games.

Can we drop the sterotype, wyte guys have no rhythm. As someone that has seen Carey (Octopus) and Peart ( the professor) great of Carey to give thanks at the grammys to Peart. I know Portnoy was giving this, he did well in a few hours. But he funniest quote was " this isnt a song it is a math equation" thank you for this video bud. It isnt Carey most complex time signature either... Every fan will have a different thought on what it is. Imo..Jambi, end of the Pot, Pushit, 46&2 and so much more. I was drummer after seeing him live..i gave my sticks to a Chinese place. Use em as chop sticks.
