If you have ever experienced a grinding wheel explosion... You may not ever experience anything again AT ALL. Do not try this without a substantial metal shield covering the wheel. When the wheel explodes it can go through a metal roof without any problems, imagine what it can do to flesh.

Hey, I'm fairly new to cylindrical grinding but i was dropped in the deep end on some rather complicated parts. best advice for small parts, coolant to help stop the wheel building up, causes some weird effects in surface finish and given the small spindle it to flex. dress the wheel as you did, then approximately step the wheel, leaving about 2-3mm of wheel. this will help towards rigidity and power usage. did you confirm that the probe body is centreline with the probe tip prior to modification? now you have means of cylindrical grinding make yourself a custom suited milling/ grinding spindle?
@forrestaddy9644
@forrestaddy9644 4 жыл бұрын
One tiny quibble: how did you ensure the shank's centerline was concentric with the po robe axis? Is there any adjustment? I ask this because it appears you simply three jawed the probe body and started grinding. Plesse tell me you established the shank axis from body mounting references.

nice work guys, but that 3/4 post for the probe you made, should you not have dialed it in with a 4 jaw chuck before grinding it? i might be wrong but i dont think the centre of the shank will be concentric with the centre of the probe? or does that not matter?? TIA

Sweet grinder!! What was the material you used for the new probe arbor? It didn't look too hard when you turned it to size which to me misses the main benefit of grinding...I don't think grinding soft material on a lathe is going to benefit you in accuracy or concentricity...the thought is that you heat treat the arbor first, then grind it to size, and now you have a very wear resistant part, vs a soft part with a ground finish. But it's still a sick grinder, you just need to show us how to make a heat treatment oven now! 🍻

All good points Nathan. We definitely plan on working with hardened steel soon. This was just what we had on hand. I am sure a good tight lathe wouldn't see much benefit from grinding non hardened steel, but between our crappy insert tooling and tool deflection, it's almost impossible to get a good press fit on our lathe. So the grinder helps us with all sorts of projects.

@PhysicsAnonymous

Yeah, no adjustment on the hight. It could be my ignorance, but I'm not sure why you would need a hight adjustment if the tool is on center.

@Chris It is not or wheel. it is a wheel on wheel. Take 2 object that are round. Next put them so that they touch each other. Now imagine one is fix like the spindle of your machine and imagine the other one to be the grinder wheel spinning. Now tell me who is the idiot. There is no centerline both touch each other to the tangent no matter where you put it.

seen someone that made the grinder so it could be mounted to the quick change setup on the toolpost , basicly made the dovetail piece that slides ontoo the toolpost with a mount for the engine from a solid piece makes it a lot more solid and you dont need to take everythig on the lathe apart to mount it \ he used this for the grinder : www.feramotools.nl/contents/media/t_rechte-slijper-houtrotfrees-spero.jpg

Why do you need a tool post grinder for the lathe? What does it do that the lathe doesn’t?
@hyeloque3537
@hyeloque3537 4 жыл бұрын
It comes down to the precision finnish and tolerance a toolpost grinder allows you to do cylindrical grinding which is process that will yield better tolerances, essential if you want to make pressfits for bearings for example
@PhysicsAnonymous
@PhysicsAnonymous 4 жыл бұрын
Indeed, hyelo is correct. It's all about precision. It can do this because the tool pressure is so much lower then a normal cutting tool, so the whole system doesn't have to be as rigid. It also allows you to remove much small amounts of material at a time, so sneaking up on a specific measurement is a lot easier.

Cool project, specially with making the new shank for the probe, buuut your inaccuracy from the lathe is showing. God, look at the parallelogram shaped grinder and shank shaft. Yeah, when you can obviously see 0.000000000000000000000000000195 of inaccuracy, specially via your video, it’s terrible! Just terrible! Couple of scrap artist. Yours is the only work piece I know that has a butter face. Naw, I’m just kidding. You guys did very well. As best you could with a crooked lathe. 😉 👍.

This motor cannot be used as a spindle, there is no rigidity in it, bearings are installed inside rubber bushings. You need to use this motor as a drive through a belt, and on a lathe send a spindle on tapered bearings to it.
@EDesigns_FL
@EDesigns_FL 4 жыл бұрын
They have show that the motor can in fact be used as a spindle; it's just not that great for this application. As you stated, the bearings have way too much play. A cursory examination of the finish shows the conspicuous cross-hatch pattern from the KZbinrs' attempts to clean-up their grinding with Scott Bright pads, which they didn't mention: VERY DISHONEST!
