That's a pretty damn good analysis after the first listen. Could easily be Tool's most complex and disorienting song. The lyrics were actually based from a long-time friend's story he had told them about an experience he had out in the desert. Also, the song just before Rosetta Stoned is part of the story as well - Lost Keys (Blame Hoffman). It was the ambient music you were playing in the background and is intended to lead into Rosetta Stoned.

The story of why the song was written just makes it great! There friend from green jello took some aside and went to check this spot that is known for allian activities but he came back and told Danny and Maynard that this stuff happened to him Danny said the look of fear in his eyes was so real that they almost felt like this had happen to him Maynard felt inspired by that and wrote Rosetta Stone from it

Irony = Forgetting your pen to review a song about forgetting your pen. :)
@Quest892 жыл бұрын
this is one of my favorite tool songs. what I get from it is a psychedelic experience. when tripping, we can think of, or are told, these profound things that change our lives and we want to tell others. When we come down we can't exactly remember the thought, but how it felt resonates in our life. the term 'shit the bed' is an old term for screwing something up. basically the guy in the hospital says he shit the bed because he can't remember the profound thought. Definitely a good take by you two on this as well.

He may or may not have met an alien in the desert while he was on acid (L.S.D.) The song is kind of an inside joke for people who have taken acid or other hallucinogens. You have incredible ideas and revelations, but by the time you're coming down from the trip, you can't remember what you learned and you forget to write it down. You forget the pen like Maynard forgot and shit the bed. Shitting the bed does NOT mean literally shit the bed. It's a metaphor for making a huge mistake like not writing down what the aliens told him about how they are going to end humanity. He forgot his pen. He metaphorically "shit the bed".
@sevenduster273 жыл бұрын
YOURE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT!! WOW, you nailed the interpretation!!
@jimmy454813 жыл бұрын
Shit the bed is a metaphor for he messed up by forgetting what they said, forgot his pen etc. he didn’t shit his pants believe it or not although the rest of your interpretation is spot on
@ididthisonpulpous65263 жыл бұрын
I tend to think he actually did shit the bed. He mentions urinating on himself earlier in the song. I think it is both meanings, literal and metaphorical. I have seen guys lose their shit, again both levels, on acid.

What other reaction channels take notes? Love it! For anyone who digs this song, specifically the drums, Danny Carey is their drummer and literally a humanoid octopus. I went down the rabbit hole of how the drums for this song work and it hurts to imagine. Johnkew is a really skilled drummer who does drum covers on YT and he covered Rosetta Stoned. He uploaded his cover along with the song, uploaded a copy of his cover with just his drums alone and a separate video of the entire process of how he broke down this 11 minute long behemoth of a song piece by piece, explaining a lot of it. LONG story short, there are portions of this song where Danny Carey is playing 3 different TIME SIGNATURES with his 4 separate limbs, along with the other members of the band playing odd signatures too. I don't even know how you begin to write music like this. I can't fathom how you can even physically manage to accurately play it. And maybe the most impressive part, I don't understand how they can make something so insanely complex sound so GOOD and ACCESSIBLE. Search 'Johnkew Rosetta Stoned' in YT if you wanna go down the rabbit hole yourself.
@fenolitto3 жыл бұрын
Stoned is one of the more difficult to digest of the Tool library. Even often for Tool fans...this one takes time to really 'get'. Suggestions. Listen to Lost Keys first as it really is a stage setting for this one. Literally the intro of the hospital where this whacked out person is at, and Rosetta Stoned is the story. Second. Read the lyrics a few times so you get the story first, because May's pace is so crazy, especially early. Know what's coming helps you connect the energy of each part. Like with the build and drop leading to the "Overwhelmed..." part. It's a buildup of him coming to the realization...and then the drop. If you dig Tool, and this one is hard...give it another chance. Either that, or get stoned out of your mind and go with it. :)

James Kontos is the Tool fan nobody talks about. Great recommendation. I often wonder if I'd rather see a reaction to someone listening to this song for the 7th time instead of the 1st time.
@fenolitto3 жыл бұрын
@@Mazzini11 That's such a niche market, but dammit, I'd be down for seeing at least a couple folks do a "Tool Tuesday" segment where they just listen to D/R/T each week, or Wings, etc. I swear you're right about the time when certain songs just "click". For me, it's knowing when "10000 days in the fire is long enough" is coming. I get all bent leading up to it. I wish I could see some folks have that journey. :)
@Mazzini113 жыл бұрын
@@fenolitto why the hell did my "reply" name you as James Kontos? lol There are so many reaction videos of Tool songs where the reactor is just bombarded with Tool sounds for the first time and they, understandably, don't REALLY get it. It's so tough to listen to the music, the mix, and the lyrics all at the same time for these folks reacting for the first time to any Tool song really. But I'm totally with ya!
@fenolitto3 жыл бұрын
@@Mazzini11 You can see that in the way so many reactors "phrase" things. And that's frustrating. Tool is not the most approachable band folks. Give the people credit who are trying. :)
@Mazzini113 жыл бұрын
@@fenolitto Oh, I 100% agree with you! Although I don't find it "frustrating" when "reactors" don't know wtf they were just exposed to, hehe. I probably watch way too many Tool reaction videos when I'm up late, but, I commented on your original post because I thought you hit the nail on the head. Depending on where any new listener dives into Tool's catalog, they're not getting the entire picture. Hence me wanting to see someone react to listening to Tool songs for the 7th time, just as much as I do the first time listening.

“Shit the bed” is an expression, not literal. Tasked with this enormous responsibility, it was too overwhelming and he “fuck@d up” or “shit the bed”.

I don't think it's an asylum more a hospital and he was at least strapped because he is still high and has strange behaviours, we know more from "Lost keys", which is the intro (also the sub title for "lost keys" is "blame Hoffmann" because LSD, braindead chemistry, etc)
