This song is about two hard headed egos who can’t grow together, until they communicate. Communication is the answer to the schism.

It's also about the alchemical principle of the primordial androgyne, the communication between mind and matter, the recombination of opposites, the sexes. Res Bina, Rebis, Hermaphrodite. Jakin and Bohas /Jachin and Boaz/, Mercury and Sulphur. The Androgyne or Hermaphrodite, the pillars, the Res Bina, signify the prerequisite to the creation of the Great Work.

The video has a very alchemical and/or esoteric background to it, there was this whole text written about it, I will link to it if I find it again, but basically the woman is mind and the man is the body, they must be one in order to "square the circle". To square the circle is an idiom which originated from alchemy, it basically means to perfect something. The whole video focuses on what both mind and body do before they become one in the very end. Edit: This is one of the best explanations btw if you are interested diginterpretations.wordpress.com/2012/07/28/schism-by-tool/

I first heard this song and the line “I know the pieces fit because I watched them fall away” when I was in a really tough time of my life and very young, so I had always thought that the meaning of this song was about a broken soul in a broken person. Now reading the lyrics and comments here, I see it’s about a broken relationship. Still, this idea of one’s internal brokenness really resonated with me then and now, so the song I guess will always mean that to me. “I know the pieces fit” yelled angrily over and over at the end was like a rallying cry for me to come back to oneness within and to heal, making me believe that with enough willpower I might be able to reform. And for me, eventually, I did.
@RebeccahSavage2 ай бұрын
I always thought similarly. I ,of course can see the relationship torn view intended, but I still feel as if it was our own person becoming changed and removed from the perfected self that we had been. I always felt that if our own pieces would fall away, then the us we were meant to be would be lost and the inner being would be significantly lessened and desperate to become truly whole again. Dang! Music can be so many things that I'm sure even the writing hadn't even seen as possible.

It's actually a heartfelt piece about how a relationship erodes over time and communication breaks down, and the urge to tear it all apart and throw it away at times, when all your soul really wants is to make things whole and well again, and to reestablish the understanding you once shared.

The poetry of this song is so eloquent and precise for describing the deterioration of relationships (of any kind really). It’s perfection. Every time I hear it I can relive any break up. Why must thou laugh in the face of curiosity and anger? To cast by thy name shall set us unto thee atmosphere of inner senses. Thy must not speak of the truth, Aristotle taught, but thou must speak by thy's name rather than thy's thighs. Truth is only truth if truth is a truthfully truthful truth. Sad days begoneth, sadly thou shall not cast away what thy's mother has engulfed; as this act contributes to the melancholy of inner sense. In modern times, the only thing thou must be concerned with, is the.. erm.. width of thy's belly; as a hugeth belly could possibly awaken thou. Thou is an entity not known to thy but not known to thou or thigh either. The art of reason is not within reason, as reasonable reason would not be reasonably reasonable, but rather unreasonably unreasonable, and thou does not beg to differ from thy's thighs. One could only imagine a possibility of a rather unreasonable reason to reason with unreason; thou must start the next ice age! Speaking of ice age, thy must not speak of ice; as the only ice of reason is that of thy's thighs. Why art thou not a tool, but rather a weapon? Thy must consider a "weapon" a tool; as weapons are known to begoneth of untools, but thy must understand that the weapon must not disposeth of thy's thighs; but the weapon must only be used to begoneth of thou's pet uncle. Using thy's weapon with intentions of disposing of thy's thighs shall only be viewed as unreasonably unreasonable reason.

Now let's get deep. Tool’s Schism isn’t your typical there’s nae cliché “boo-hoo, they left me” pish. It’s raw, cerebral, and forces ye to confront the bigger picture. The song dissects the collapse of communication, the chasm that opens between two people when understanding crumbles. It’s no just about love - it’s about human connection itself. Schism reminds us that a breakup isn’t always a single, dramatic moment; it’s the slow erosion of something sacred. The lyrics, “I know the pieces fit,” hit like a gut punch. They’re nae lament - they’re a desperate acknowledgement of what’s been lost and a yearning for what might never be rebuilt. This is how breakups should be written about. Not as some self-pitying drivel but as the visceral tearing of two intertwined lives. It’s the art of a breakup, peeling back the emotional layers, makin' you feel the pain but also seein’ the beauty in the breakdown. A Tool-style breakup song makes ye think, makes ye bleed a bit inside. It’s nae just for wallowing - it’s for confronting the mess, the complexity, the fuckin’ humanity of it all Now that's fuckin deep

4:35 mark and beyond...I'll never forget hearing this song for the first time and that part of the song just hitting my soul. I replayed that part a few times, had the volume up on my CD player..I was living with my 65 year old aunt at the time and her bedroom was directly above where I was playing this song. I came upstairs a little while later and the first thing she said to me was "whatever you were playing downstairs earlier was absolutely beautiful..what is it?" I told her it was a Tool song and album. She really liked it. Also in my sophomore year of highschool I had a friend that had never really listened to Tool, I gave them my Lateralus cd to borrow and told them to go home and listen to the whole thing They came back to school the next day, looked almost dazed and told me that album was life changing. Little did I know that they would be instrumental in my discovery of more than the status quo! They helped open my eyes to a world in which I was not a victim, a world in which I could take control and never settle. Which comes from anger, resentment, blaming the other and ultimately giving up due to no longer giving effort. Which is sad bc they could've saved it, bc there was really love. I'm 46 years old, I know a lot about music, I've listened to everything there is, all genres of music, I'm a big fan of Metallica, Alice in Chains, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Faith No More, and a lot of electronic music, from Jazz, Drum n Bass, Bands like Massive Attack, Stero MCs, Depeche Mode and I won't go on because I could do it until tomorrow. It's interesting that I knew about Tool all the time and it's one of the few bands I never heard or gave them a chance. I listen to Fear Inoculum since the first day when it came out, I haven't moved away from it.. Until 10 days ago when I decided to listen to the other albums while walking on the street or in the countryside.. What I want to say is that I was speechless by the quality of the rhythms, passionate and infectious riffs and of course the technique and production itself. I want to say that regardless of the lost time, I am so happy and excited that at the age of 46 I have the privilege of listening to Tool as my dearest music that accompanies me day by day even in my dreams, I am totally obsessed with music ..Absolute perversion and art.. Now of course my mission is to transfer my experience to everyone who does not know the miracle called Tool.. Thank you life!

One of my favorite songs. But there's something about hearing the string glides (or whatever it's called) that just adds to it. Great job!

Yeah it's confusing but all of this that you see has a very deep meaning. I just don't know what it's trying to tell me!

Tool technology directed it themselves man their guitarist did all the effects and all that jazz.

This somg ALWAYS reminds me of fall and Halloween.... Being in an empty neighborhood at night with no one out and the leaves blowing on the ground. Off in the distance you can barely see something in all black with only an expressionless white mask standing there. Everything is poorly lit by the street lights... This especially rings true at the part 4:00 until Maynard starts singing again.

I first heard this in 2001 when I was 15. I was in the kitchen and had the radio on XFM (London) and I just stopped what I was doing and listened. Never heard anything like it and been a fan since.

Same here. Was 16 in alabama. It was the commercial on mtv advertising the premier of the album. The beat was so different I bought the album blindly because this was the strangeness in music I never knew I was lookin for.
