I agree. I mean first of all it has respected. Second While experiencing a Tool composition There’s so many things in terms of layers and complexity that can get lost. There’s different layers within this song in terms of each band member doing the Fibonacci sequence including Menard in terms of his accents on the beat Ryans music and then they all come together at the end of each section.. The colors black and white most have come to consensus it’s a progression through time starting with an infant you see in black-and-white one of the big themes within the Tool world is the spiral. Anyway it is for you to read into that’s why Maynard writes these great works of art is to challenge the listener.. Always know Menard is challenging you and sometimes even leading you down a rabbit hole.. For example Stinkfist and Pushit. It’s been pretty funny to watch some of the reactions on those two. in the tool community that’s known as spiraling out of control.

Anyone who first discovers Tool, and who has ANY appreciation for the intricate and amazing nature of Tool and their musical ability in general, soon realizes that once they hear their sound find themselves beyond the “event horizon”......permanently drawn into them without the ability to ever hear music the same again. Once you hear Tool, their sound becomes the benchmark by which ALL other music is measured. It is this way for me, and I find I am consistently disappointed by music by other groups simply because I find myself measuring it against what I consider the apex of sonic perfection, Tool....

Everyone is born color blind and that is that order of colors you learn to see. It's about growth and change. Tools music is pure art. Their Guitarist and Bass player write all the songs and they approach it as a classical composition instead of "how can we make sure this is catchy and sells?" The Grudge and this song are the best tracks on the album in my opinion. Loving your reaction!! The band was sued before this album came out and the litigation has kept them from re-releasing their music on streaming services. I notice so many people have this theory about the colors and the relation to some kind of trip. It's more simple than that I believe. When we are born we first only see in black and white shapes. As our eyes develop we start to see colors. Really it seems so obvious that the song shows us that to truly grow we need to take chances, push the envelope as is stated. Some of the lyrics show us what impedes our quest for growth and some how we may achieve growth. The spiral refers to the pattern produced in nature according to the golden ratio, thus as with nature we should spiral out, or keep going (growing).

I think "Lateralus" is about Maynard's approach to writing. First it starts out as a theme; an idea. Black and white. Then, the more he listens, the ideas coalesce into more specificity; red and yellow. He's able to place himself in the middle of the music, let it flow through him; getting emotional. It starts as a simple idea, it then spirals out into more, and more detail. Ever expanding into what he wants it to communicate. The ideas as they come together tend to go where they've not been before. Through either catharsis, or exploration of ones feelings, spiritual, or otherwise, we end up someplace we weren't before...

Black and white is the first colors babies see, then red and yellow as they get older, then the full spectrum of color by the time they are no longer infants. The purpose of the song is to always be reaching outside the box. The references to the spiral are because so many things in nature look like spirals, including our galaxy. Riding the spiral to the end is riding the spiral in our galaxy never knowing what happens next.

The lyrics are in the sequence. Black 1, then 1, white are 2, all I see 3, in my infancy 5, red and yellow then came to be 8

Thank you for doing this! Puscifer and A Perfect Circle are Maynard's other bands. Quality stuff there as well. Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Baroness are two of my favorite other bands.

their music is very exact but at the same time i'm positive they play it almost purely by feel. i mean, that being said, i'm sure that as far as the instrumentals go these guys play by feel almost perfectly in sync with the sheets that they've created. just listening to it creates an amazing picture.... i can only imagine what the guys that actually created this see in their heads when reciting this.

I second this one Jim. It's so different but somehow still so Tool's style if that makes any sense lol. Also just one a week would be great :)

You got the syllable stuff right. There is also a moving time signature near the start that runs in a 9/4, 8/4, 7/4 pattern with 987 being the 16th or 17th number in the sequence depending if you start at 0. The length of the song and when the intro ends also hooks into the fib pattern

Lucas Pegoretto yes...wings of Marie is cool...but i definitly dont reccomend for a new tool listener. Can easily turn them off with the pacing of the song. Kinda eerks me when i see that request for new listeners.

Fckgogle Pluss agreed. That and Rosetta Stoned(which he already did and didn't seem to like it much). He needs some basics. Stinkfist, parabola, the patient, sober, opiate, pushit, H.

The colors stand for the colors a baby is able to see as it eyes develop after birth. Hence the ultrasound in the first of the song. In this song it represents progression and growth of the mind as a person embraces the randomness of life.

Thanks , Jim! Awesome to see you enjoying this band. This album seems to be a good start for you. You may want to consider Parabol/Parabola off of it.

Excellent. Had loads of fun with this one. In large part, you remind me of Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull. Super fun to listen to.

There are over 400 comments on this video so someone has probably already said this, but I interpret the song to be about not letting your anxieties hold you back. He's saying to step outside of your boundaries. If you stay within yourself your intuition whithers. He's telling us to ride the spiral of life, because it will take you to places you've never been.

This song pushes you outside the bounds of comfort/predictability. Black and white sounds like a rigid view which when alllwed to bend, red / yellow seem to represent an openness to possibilities.

It's MATH! LOL Band meeting: Drummer walks in. Writes a full chalk-board of a mathematical sequence/formula. Turns to the boys, "This is the next song. Here's your parts. Seeya Tomorrow in the studio."

You made a good point about what songs will stand the test of time. I feel like there isn't any songs that are capable of becoming timeless classics in mainstream music. Everything is so digitized and lacks soul without the live instrumentation. I'll never understand how the masses enjoy listening to songs that have nothing meaningful to say. Tool has their own, original sound which is partially why I think a lot of their songs are timeless.

I think it's about "being open minded" and constantly learning. "Keep going, spiral out." The colour section is just another analogy to "growing", it's the way little children start seeing the world. First they only can distinguish between dark and light (black and white), then red and yellow comes in and the other colours follow later. ;-)

Lateralus is my single most favorite song. I don't play favorites either. The lyrics, and dimension of this song speak to my soul though like no other. I'm open to the possibility it could be topped, but that hasn't happened yet. It sounds like a soundtrack of my life in one single perfectly made song.
