About 10 years ago I went to a guys house to buy a snap on motorcycle lift. When he opened his garage door I about fell over in shock at what I saw. The entire 2 car garage had snap on tools and boxes everywhere. Six full size snap on boxes stuffed with every kind of snap on tools, wall hanging snap on boxes. Even an 80 gallon snap on compressor (not there brand name but the company that builds them for snap on). Turns out the guy was with snap on for 35 years and retired a regional manager. We talked for quite a while and I started asking how much he paid for some of the tool boxes and he’d laugh and say “almost nothing, freight damaged” and show me a little scratch or dent on the back of it. At one point he held up a (I think) 9 or 10 piece deep socket set and asked me how much I’d pay off the truck for it. I said probably $200 and he told me snap on’s cost to make it was $5. I asked why snap on charges so much for it compared to the other company’s and he answered “because they can, people still buy them because it’s snap on”......

Yea tht figures. They are a predatory company that overcharges for wht they say are "quality tools" which is no diff than stuff you can buy out there for less with the same quality as snap on, Mac, or cornwell. As you can tell I'm not a fan of the tool trucks and they way they do business or the fact they are ridiculously expensive.
@firstlast---
@firstlast--- 4 жыл бұрын
The most common argument I've seen is "well it comes with a warranty!" For one the reason why you got a warranty is because tool trucks overcharge by so much they can easily afford to give away free tools here and there. Second, that warranty does you no good when a tool breaks and you have to wait until next week for the tool truck to show up. If you don't have duplicates of highly used tools you're going to get yourself in a jam if you're in the middle of a job and something goes wrong. You can buy the same or better quality tools online for a fraction of the price, it only makes sense to go on the tool truck if you need a specialty tool or if you need something right now

@@firstlast--- This is why I buy HF as often as I can get away with it. Because I can buy 2 of everything and still come out way ahead on price vs anything else. And I have a HF literally down the street from my house. I need something warrantied, it's walk in, walk out.

That guy was bullshitting you. Not saying they aren't over priced but there is a difference between a harbor freight wrench and a snap on. I've rounded the shit out of harbor freight wrenches, my snap ons have never had that problem. But I also use them everyday hard-core. Most people who say there isn't a difference in a harbor freight wrench and a snap on are just simply not professionals. And Carlisle line wrenches spread like ass. And I've seen plenty of people endorse those. I don't think they do this for a living if they do.

chzburgRANDY I’m a professional tech and I mostly use gear wrench, sunex, harbor freight, and other similar brands and they hold up just as well as my co workers snap on tools. Snap on for the most part only sells high quality tools and other brands can be hit or miss but if you check reviews and look into tools before you buy them I assure you that other brands can make just as good if not better tools than snap on at a quarter of the price.

I’d much prefer an honest “I forgot man I’m sorry” vs a lying “it wasn’t my fault I’m sorry” And if I were a tool dealer, I might bring a shiney new light with me... something you can easily show off if the opportunity arises, but not enough to keep someone off the truck

We used to have a Mac guy that came around a couple times per year. He'd do that shit, drop off tools and be like "give em a try and let me know what you think next week" and then he wouldn't show up for months, expecting that you'd find a time to use the tools, and them charge you for them. The only time he tried it with me, I handed them right back 6 months later.

Only reason I know our Marco dealers name is cause it's on the side of his truck. Don't even know what he looks like but he parks on the street every week. Hasn't ever gotten off of his truck. Never comes inside and I guess he expects you to come to him. Snap on shows up but acts like I can't afford anything on his truck. I'm the lead tech at the shop I'm at. I regularly do 60-70hrs a week. I don't buy from either of them. Thankfully our Cornwell dealer is good

I tried going with snap on when my local Matco dealer retired. Long story short I now drive 40 min to meet the other Matco dealer. I have never had to try so hard to give someone my money. The snap on guy had Zero communication skills, never stops by even when I text him what I need or want. I still haven't gotten anything I have ordered over 2 months ago. What a joke of a dealer. I go to the Matco dealer 40 min away and he is Jonny on the spot! Gets me what I order the very next week if he doesn't have it and communicates very well with 0 b.s. In conclusion I've now spent over 2k in 2 weeks with the new Matco guy and cancelled everything I've ordered from snap on (not that I would have ever gotten it anyway) and banned him from my shop. (not that he ever showed up anyway)

The Marco guy that used to come to our shop would come once a month or once every 3 weeks always had a story about his truck breaking down or he was on vacation always something. So I had this flashlight from him that had a broke. It was actually the shops flashlight and one week he actually showed up we gave it to him and he says no problem I will get right on this. 2-3 months go buy and nothing from him. I finally find his cell number and call him. He proceeds to tell me that he retired and is now living and Florida and he doesn’t know what to tell me about our flashlight. Lol I had to laugh it was amazing.

Totally agree they do it in England too. Do they think we are little kids? I keep a list of things I need or need a warranty claim. I also like to brows the van in peace if I have the time. We have a new Mac dealer who is a breath of fresh air in comparison. As you rightly said before the biggest advantage is warranty service and getting urgent delivery in a sticky situation. For a lot of tools I get on line. I don’t care so cheap it’s no loss. But tools I use hard and frequently I buy quality. Your advice is always spot on mate.

As a tool dealer myself. Things do happen and sometimes things are out of my control. But i make sure to be honest with the customer about it. Nobody’s perfect. But making excuses to why something happened repeatedly and not talking to everyone regardless of who they bought their box from is definitely a sure way to not win any hearts and minds. The show and sell thing is something that it works for some shops and others you get chewed out over it but that’s what their taught and it takes time to figure that out. This job isn’t for everyone and it’s definitely hard to wear many hats but honesty is always the best policy. Hopefully he gets it figured out.

Snap-on training... That's how everyone is taught "the system". My eyes nearly rolled out of my head going through the one week of mandatory training in Dallas,TX. It's stupid and mostly outdated. I threw most of what was "taught" to me at training out the window, especially since I had been a dealer for a year and a half before they sent me to training. The new dealer was running with his initial inventory. Snap-on makes a franchisee take on a specific starter inventory. There is a gap between starting your franchise and being able to order in tools ordered for customers. The trainer is an FD, or Franchise Developer. They've been trained with the same BS schooling that franchisees get. 99% of FDs are not and have never been a franchisee or mobile company store manager. Yes, Snappy gives you a $100k initial inventory. When you buy a franchise, you start out about $250k in the hole. $30k down, $10k franchise fee ever 10 years, your empty truck is about $120k, then you have the initial inventory. It's a hard business to get started if you aren't a former tech, don't know tools, don't know how the automotive industry works.

Yup! That’s Snap-On for you! My Matco dealer is a great person! He’s humble as fuck, very! He was a ASE Master Tech that became a distributor. I’m a Luber Goober transitioning to a General Maintenance Tech, working my way up in the industry. I remember the first day I walked into his truck, I was looking around at all the tools, boxes, and scan tools, he asked me, “Yo, so what do you do? What your job title and job duties?” I responded to him and told him that I was Tire/Lube tech, his response, “Oh okay bro, yeah man, stay away from those tools, you don’t need none of that yet!”. I was amazed, because with the Snap-On trainer, he was trying to sell me a Solus Edge scanner and was very upset and Butthurt because I refused! My Matco dealer has never once tried to upsell me, not once! That’s why I take my business with him! He takes care of his clients! Always asks what you need, if anything is broken, warranties whatever you need without a hassle! That’s why I will continue to buy from him!

From 3:00 to 3:25 I can truly feel your frustration through my phone hahaha! I text our old snap on tool truck rep once in the evening about getting my 1/2 impact rebuilt and she couldn't really give me rough estimate. When she finally came by about a month later I asked her and she gave me a half-ass answer on the price, length of time to get it back, and wouldn't have a loaner. All with just enough attitude to make me say "I'll think about it." Ended up buying a milwaukee high torque instead... smh.

You nailed that with perfect accuracy! Our Snappy guy told me that he was going to be coming to my shop every OTHER week because the guys at the local big dealerships were feeling rushed out of the tool truck with all of their massive amounts of purchases (what a wad of CRAP... it's a small town... I know those guys). I told him, "No problem. The MAC guy will cover for you." Actually, the MAC guy didn't stop any more often, but he did tell me to call him if I needed anything urgently. Long story short, Snappy turns up three weeks later bragging about all the new tool boxes he's been selling to the big dealers. That was BS... I walk through those shops when I make an urgent parts run. I didn't see any walls covered with new boxes. When I told him the MAC guy's got everything covered here, see you next month, he gets all pissy and starts going on about how a guy has to take care of the good customers and left. Funny... he hasn't missed a week since then.

My Cornwell guy at my last job carried his bag in to our shop every week. But it was always stuff that had a special deal that month. But only the stuff we might care about. "Buy this 1/2 inch impact and get the stubby 1/2 inch for half off". Bought a lot from him that way. Didn't mind because if I was really busy it saved me the trouble of going on the truck to pay him. Just hand him cash and brought the receipt back to me.

I completely understand where you're coming from. When the tool guys come in, the only thing I want them to bring me is either a receipt, a tool I ordered, or a flyer. Don't try to peddle tools while I'm trying to work. I work in the south too so I know how good it feels to get on the truck with the ac. Most of the time that's what I go out there for. But seriously though, I do love the flyers.

The couple of times I've been on my local Snap-on and Matco tool trucks the reception I received seems on the cold side, I reckon that's because I haven't any account with them even though I paid cash or I'm not a full-time mechanic. Oh well. NAPA has become my "tool truck" as well as my auto parts supplier for my DIY and side jobs. This is not just new dealers. THe Snap-on guy I have now is an old veteran and still walks in with the bucket of tools. Every time he walks up to me with a set of screwdrivers I say:"Wow, Snap-on sells these now? I guess I can stop turning flat-head screws with a butter knife".

If a Snap On guy cant get it but u found out it’s available I can Promise u they are in the red with there credit limit with snappy. Ps they generally make 35% on a product, Snap On think they are the best but not these days there’s some good other brands , 20 years ago yes.

Yes sir snap on looks who has a box that says snap on i use to have a small Proto tool cart when I started their was the Matco and Snap on tool truck they would go and tell the techs with big tool boxs that if they wanted to see new tool but the never told the rest of the techs I was one of the small guys but when I use to go in their I wouldn't do payments I would pay it off and I think that's what the snap on or matco owner didn't like. Now I work for my self in my one door garage and get my stuff on line don't need them.

@108SBSO
@108SBSO 4 жыл бұрын
*spoiler alert I’m a dealer With that being said. The bag works and I’ll tell you why. When you start you need sales. You don’t have money on the streets. The bag helps especially when you’re a new guy. I don’t use the bag anymore because I feel lame lol but there are so many times I’ll have a tool in my hand when I walk into the shop for Tech D. Well I see Tech A, B, and C first. Most of the time those three techs will ask me what that is and want to touch it. I’ll say oh Tech D ordered this or it’s a warranty for him. Alot of the time they’ll be like oh cool order me one. People like to see stuff. If carry the bag I always ask the tech if they have time to check something out. @flatratemaster in your case just say hey I’m busy but I’ll check out in the truck in a bit. Trust me tools guys would much rather get you in the truck than not. We can’t carry everything we have in the bag lol. But there are guys who will buy stuff but won’t go in the truck. I have $100/week guys who have bought thousands of dollars worth of tools and never been on the truck 🤷🏻‍♂️ the bag is just a tool. I use it for new items but also for sales. If I have 10 socket sets I got on sale I’ll carry one unit every shop and people will buy. On the snap on topic they are very arrogant. Snap-on buries their dealers with debt. They send them boxes without them being ordered. That’s why snap-on blows them out for so cheap. They have to move inventory or they’ll go out of business. Snap-on sells itself. You don’t need a personality to be a snap-on guy. Unfortunately that makes for bad customer service. First thing I ask when I see my guys is something like “ Hey Tech A how are you? Anything I can help you with? Brokens or warranties?” I sell myself. Service. Sales comes second. I treat everyone equally no mater their box. I’ve walked into shops and seen a tech Ive been working numbers on for a box with for months have a brand new snap-on box. It feels like you got kicked in the stomach. The first thing I say is something like “ damn bro that’s a beautiful box. Congratulations on your new box.” Depending on my relationship with the guy I might say “ now let’s will it with my tools haha. I’ve heard stories of snap-on guys talking shit or not selling to that guy anymore. The last thing your customer wants to hear after he dropped 5k-30k on a box he is proud of is that is junk and garbage. Snap-on is their own worst enemy. @flatratemaster I’m sorry you had a bad experience but it’s no surprise to me you have a wall of Matco. Best build box on the market. Sorry for the rant haha

Snap on has a ruthless team of lawyers on staff. They make sure they get paid regardless. And yes they get to sell more franchises if they change dealers every year. Then they get to go after the old ones in court and sue them for any outstanding debt.

My Snap-on dealer is great and every dealer is different. Wonder what people thought of you when you first started out b/c I'm sure you were no different than any other new mechanic just starting out. My Matco & Mac dealers suck but I don't rant & rave I just go on the truck and see what they have new. Every dealer is different just like mech/techs and with your rants about Snap-on all the time maybe it's a vibe. My Snap-on dealer has my tools direct shipped to my shop in 2 days and I don't pay the shipping unless I need it ASAP and he overnights it. If I don't need them right away I tell him to bring it the next week and if he has it on his truck & I need it that day he either drops it by or I go to his house. Almost every new dealer starting out is the same and has been for the 40+ years I've been doing this. They become better or fold just like in our profession.

I've been in this business for 42 years. In that entire time I have never, EVER, had a Snap On dealer overnight me ANYTHING! Not even the mounting plates for my Snap On wheel balancer that he SHORTED me when he delivered it (and took my Bear in trade). So I had to do without a wheel balancer for a WHOLE WEEK until he showed up one week later at the usual time. I guess your money is a hell of a lot greener than mine!

As a former snapon dealer, i feel your pain, the only thing worse is when a new mac or cornwell dealer show up with the same attitude. Had a mac trainer tell me i couldnt make payments on a $60 tool unless i gave my social security number. I bought the whole tool because the new dealee was a former coworker of mine. Needless to say he didn't last long though

Seems to me you just got unlucky getting a new dealer that’s also new to the whole industry. Their shipments have been taking AWHILE lately. Not sure if it’s the whole covid BS or what but I have waited a few weeks for things to come in also. I actually enjoy when he comes to me with his deals new tools cause I don’t have to stop what I’m doing and go waste time on the truck. I can just say no I don’t need that or yeah I’d like that, and go ahead and run my payment for the week. Simple and easy in my mind, and keeps me on the job.

I don’t remember exactly how it works but it’s something like the dealer has to pay for what they order every month so new dealers without a ton of money sell a bunch of stuff on truck accounts then can’t order anything because that 500 dollar tool on a guys truck account at 50 bucks a week takes 2 1/2 months to get paid for and ur not gonna tell that to ur customers.
